Explanation of Assessment

Numbers 1 and 2 of this quiz are simply computational problems. An assessment should never be solely computational, or plug-and-chug, but its important to have a healthy percentage of these types of questions. Theyre also good computational problems in the sense that its open-ended answer format and not multiple choice. With multiple choice computations, you can often simply plug in the choices until you get the option that gives you a true statement, and therefore you have found your answer. A teacher may think their student answered correctly because they actually understood the material, when they really didnt. Number 3 is an excellent question because it requires critical, outof-the-box thinking. The student has to go against their intuition to solve it as multiple integrals and recall (what should be) prior knowledge from the last chapter about the basic integration rules. It requires them to use their long term memory and mesh some formulas and concepts together, which is much better than just spewing out a formula. I did ask them to simply state two formulas in number 4. I did this because it is material they learned the day before, and I understand that not everyone mightve picked up on the entire concept right away. Also, they do need to know those formulas in order to solve basic computational problems, such as number 5 on this exam. I chose to let them pick their method because, according to the standards, they are supposed to be able to compare the two methods. Through this comparison, everyone will have a natural preference, and if done correctly, both methods get you the same

answer. I feel that this is an adequate length quiz for the time allotted and the right difficulty level for a formative assessment.
