Meet Mr Pakistan: Mian Muhammad Mansha Yaha

Mian Mansha owns one of the best banks in Asia but his ambitions reach much further. He plans to create a new holding company and list his various interests on the LSE. And he hopes to expand his business base across Asia and into the Middle East and emerging Europe.
by Elliot Wilson IN AN INCREASINGLY banal, public relations-heavy world, where chief executives stick rigidly to a message-led mantra, Mian Mohammad Mansha is a throwback to a more open corporate era. The chairman of Pakistans largest company, Nishat Group, Mansha is also Pakistans richest man, with a personal fortune of about $5 billion. But thats not enough for the native of Chiniot, an ancient Pakistan city famous for churning out many of the subcontinents richest and most ambitious traders and entrepreneurs. Mansha, who took over the family group aged 22 after the death of his father, and who has never before been interviewed by the international media, has grand plans for his sprawling group, which boasts 30 company divisions stretched across sectors as diverse as tourism, cement, insurance and textiles. Hes engaged in rolling most of his assets into a single holding company, with a view to raising billions of dollars by listing them on the London Stock Exchange. Mansha plans to sink billions more dollars, raised on the international debt and equity markets, into much-needed infrastructure and power plants at home assuming that is, given recent market turbulence, that the international markets are still sufficiently healthy to help out in a years time. And having recently teamed up with a Malaysian lender, Maybank, he plans to join forces with his new partner to lavish yet further billions on buying at least two foreign lenders pummelled by the credit crunch.

Considering that the 61-year-old Punjabi plans to create Pakistans first genuinely global corporate, with banking and insurance interests across Asia, the Middle East and beyond, he is remarkably down to earth. To some, his lack of media exposure might, combined with vast wealth, mark him out as something of a recluse a modern-day Howard Hughes, the US mogul who lived out his years holed

up in a Las Vegas hotel eating nothing but chicken soup. Mansha, of course, is nothing of the sort although ironically he does have a book on Hughes tucked away behind his desk, alongside biographies of John D Rockefeller and Burmese Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. "Im nothing like Hughes," Mansha protests with a smile. "He was something of an eccentric. I have a very normal life." Jacketless and with a crisp white shirt and pink tie, Mansha looks you directly in the eye and answers honestly, directly and at length. Yes hes optimistic about the future of his flagship lender, Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB), which in July was handed the award of best bank in Asia by Euromoney. "Its one of the great franchises in the world," he says. "It is really quite the strangest bank in the entire world, because one-third of its deposits are current account deposits, with an average of just $2,500 per account. Its unique in the world small customers like us, they stay with us, and we make sure we offer them really good services that they like. Theres a trust factor a bond between us and our customers." [edit] Personal life

Mian Muhammad Mansha was born in Rawalpindi to a wealthy Chinioti family, his privileged upbringing allowed him to enjoy an early business education at an elite university. His childhood was spent in Faisalabad from where he also started his career as one of the most prominent industrialist of Pakistan. His textile mill in Faisalabad under the name of Nishat Mills still is one of the biggest textile units in Faisalabad. He formally joined the family business after completing his studies in London.[2] . Apart from these large acquisitions, he was simultaneously expanding his Nishat Textiles segment, Nishat Textiles is Pakistan's largest fabric mill.[3] But all these achievements,to power on November 6, 1990, he invited bids for the privatization of Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) on 15 December 1990 and subsequently announced its privatization to successful bidder: Messrs Abdullah & Co on 9 January 1991. The stories from the past suggest that five bids were received for Muslim Commercial Bank with Tawakkals and Adamjee being the highest and second highest bidders respectively. Adamjee, who formed a joint venture with Yunus Brothers, perhaps the biggest Export Houses in Pakistan, had incorporated Muslim Commercial Bank in 1949. As previous owner, they had the first right of purchase, but third lowest bid by Messers Abdullah and others, a consortium of twelve leading industrialists, mostly from the Punjab. Mian Muhammad Mansha was asked to match the highest bid and was declared the perhaps, play third fiddle to Mansha's master-stroke: the acquisition of one of Pakistan's most profitable banks, MCB Bank Limited. Comin, executing deals with state-owned WAPDA (Water and Power Distribution Authority) to sell excess power capacity generated at Nishat's various power stations. This led to the founding of Nishat Power, which is now a growing business with Mansha's son playing a senior role in the company's executive board.

MCB has also recently started a partnership with Maybank of Malaysia. Maybank now has a 25% share in MCB.[4] The general perception is that MCB was privatised to Mansha and his associates because of Mansha's social connections with Nawaz Sharif. However, Mansha feels that investing in the shares of Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) has been one of his biggest business slip ups. The reason for privatising MCB remains a mystery. Nawaz Sharif came in winner. The consortium which called itself the National Group consisted of many industrial groups and their associated families.[5]

[edit] Plans
With $700 million in cash from MCB and another $300 million raised from international markets, Mansha has aspirations of acquiring an established bank in Indonesia and possibly even in the Middle East. MCB Bank already has international operations, and the Mansha group also owns an automobile leasing company in Kazakhstan. Further plans include major infrastructure projects in Pakistan, such as the construction of power plants and sea ports.[6]

[edit] Criticism
In 2004, Mansha's group and his preferred candidate were defeated by a margin of two votes in the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA). Mansha subsequently resigned from APTMA.[7] According to his first interview to a foreign magazine, Mian Mansha stated that, "my net worth is about $4-5 billion."[8] Indeed, there have been claims by many circles in Pakistan that the closely held group has a total capitalisation of nearly US$10 Billion (Rs. 800 billion).[9] However, due to a mix of private and public companies in the group, it is not possible to accurately arrive at a definitive capitalization of sea ports. D.G. Khan cement, which is part of Mansha's Nishat group, was once the target of violence by local people living near the factory. The issue was eventually resolved by discussions and increased security around the plant.[10]

[edit] Achievements
Mian Mohammad Mansha is currently on the board of 45 companies in Pakistan and is one of the most powerful and influential people in the country. He was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz civil award by President Musharraf on 23 March 2004. One of Mansha's companies, Nishat Mills Limited, is the largest exporting entity in Pakistan.[11] In March 2010, Mian Mohammad Mansha became the first Pakistani ever to make it to the Forbes rich list. Forbes valued Mansha as the World's 937th richest person, with the net worth of $1.0 Billion.

[edit] Other businesses

Mansha owns the domestic charter plane service Pakistan Aviators & Aviation Ltd.[12] He also owns the Mayfair based St James's Club and Hotel.[13]
