The kite runner begins telling the story of Amir and Hassan enjoying their childhood flying kites, getting in trouble, and pretending to be the Sultans of Kabul. The main character Amir is shown as a weak character that cant stand up for himself, while his friend Hassan is a brave character who is always standing up for him. However, when Hassan is in a moment of trouble, Amir cannot help him. Because Amir realizes his cowardice, Amir ends up causing a separating between Hassan and Ali. Amir and intimidating father Baba must flee the country when the Russians invade Afghanistan, and they take safe heaven in America. As Amir attempts to bury his past, with marriage and a life set for him. Amir gets an unexpected call from his fathers friend Rahim Khan, and he realizes he must redeem himself by traveling through war torn Afghanistan to get his dead halfbrothers son Sohrob. After much help and being beaten half to death, Amir escapes with Sohrob, and must face the challenge of getting Sohrob to America. After much conflict, and an attempt at suicide by Sohrob, Amir finds a way to get him to America and raise him as his son. Amir finally feels that he has atoned for his sins towards Hassan, and continues his life in America with a new son.
