Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to acquaint students with resources that may be useful for their Asian research project, remind students how to use Easybib, and give a brief lecture on fair-use Learning Outcome(s): Students will learn how to navigate the LeBlanc HWC resource page. Students will review how to use Gale Virtual Reference library. Students will learn how to evaluate a website for reliability. Students will understand when and why it is necessary for them to use the Document the Fair-Use Reasoning Process worksheet. Standards Common Core Standards for Math and English: CC.9-10.W.8 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. Illinois Learning Standard(s) Addressed: 5.B.4a Choose and evaluate primary and secondary sources (print and nonprint) for a variety of purposes. 5.B.4b Use multiple sources and multiple formats; cite according to standard style manuals. Standards for 21st Century Learner Addressed: 1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions. 1.2.4 Maintain a critical stance by questioning the validity and accuracy of all information. 1.3.1 Respect copyright/ intellectual property rights of creators and producers. Instructional procedures: Focusing event: Preview the lesson and ask the students if they know how to access the class resource page for the purpose of this project. Input from you: Begin the lesson by showing the students how to access their class resource page. Provide tips on using database, Gale Virtual Reference Library. Keywords Refinement tools built into the database Notice the name of the encyclopedia Discuss the print and email functionality of the database Discuss how to evaluate a website if students use a website not listed on the class resource page. Who is the author? What are his/her credentials? What is the sponsoring organization? When was it last updated? Are their advertisements on the page? Guided practice: Demonstrate how to access the class resource page. Demonstrate a search in GVRL and discuss the results. Briefly discuss the recommended websites at the center of the class resource page. Review EasyBib with students. Demonstrate image search using Creative Commons, Flickr, and Google Advanced image search. Closure: I will end my lecture by asking the students to move to a computer, login and begin their research. Check for understanding Remind students of the last time they used GVRL and Easybib, ask them if they remember? Ask students how they evaluate the reliability of a website? Facilitate their independent research. Whats next? Students will have another 90-minute class to continue their research. A librarian will not be present during the follow up class.
