Norton Antivirus Virus Definitions are not up to date

Symptoms The virus definition file version is not current. Resolution Steps Log the store account off and log in as administrator. Double click on the Norton Shield icon in the system tray.

This will bring up the Norton Antivirus screen information. This will show you the date and revision version of the definition file.

Note that the LiveUpdate button will be grayed out. Before proceeding with the manual update, make sure to check that the standard proxy settings are set on the browser options. This is not always automatically set in the administrator account. If the proxy is not entered, LiveUpdate will not complete.

Open My Computer to navigate to C:\Program Files\Symantec Antivirus folder. In there, look for and double click on the VPDN_LU file. This should launch the LiveUpdate application.

Click Next to proceed with the update. This can take a few minutes, depending on how large the download is. Once the download and update is complete, verify the version information by bringing up the Norton screen once more. Note: The version and date may not show as updated right away without a reboot. Should this occur, the other way to verify the update occurred is by clicking on File and going to Threat List.

This brings up the Threat List window which will show the updated version below.

If the update does not work at all, Norton may have to be reinstalled. Please see Reinstalling Norton Antivirus document. Applies to All versions of Norton Antivirus.
