Rachael Somes EDU 695 Artifact 3A: Student Case Study Elizabeth NBPTS Standards - Proposition 3 Standard: Teachers

are Responsible for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning Rationale: We all know that in our profession, time is our most valuable resource. There never seems to be enough of it and it seems as though we are forever racing against it. It is so important for us, as educators, to take the time to really stop and think about each one of our students and gain an understanding about the whole picture of the child. In our busy days of teaching, it is easy to get caught up in the end goal/result when what we really need to do is redirect ourselves to remember the day to day processes and learnings that occur every day...all the while keeping that end goal in mind. By using ongoing formative assessment, we are always able to be with the student at whatever stage in the game they are at in any point in time. From that practice, and with that information, we are able to meet the student where they are in order to deliver the best approach that is needed. Reection: I have chosen to use a student case study as an artifact for this standard because I believe it truly exhibits and emphasizes the importance of managing and monitoring student learning. The four components of this case study caused me to take a thorough look at one student in my second grade classroom and immerse myself in every aspect of the child. By composing a student prole about this student, I felt empowered to establish and organize all of the background information about her and I was able to use this as a foundation base of knowledge. From this point, I was able to examine my instructional practices and what was and was not working for my student. Effective assessments were looked at closely to determine the next steps that needed to be taken in the form of interventions. This holistic approach to thinking about students and their learning is what I strive for with each and every member of my classroom community.
