QUESTION on Memory Systems Design (Total Marks :80) 1.

Design a 68000 based Micocomputer System in minimal configuration : System requirements are as follows: (a) Stand-alone operation (b) 128-KB EPROM based monitor (c) Speed not crucial in the design( suggest 8 MHz clock) (d) 256 KB static RAM (e) One RS232C serial I/O port and one parallel port (f) Memory and peripheral expansion must be possible( Organise your own memory map from the examples given in the text book) (g) Interrupt and multiprocessor capabilities should be possible to be added. ( Hint: Follow Part 14 of the lecture notes for finding solutions to the above problem) Your report must include the following: (a) List of major components( you may use the same components used in page 13/part14)-slide 25 (b) Memory map showing the size, device and address space-slide 26 (c) Address decoding table( similar to 27) (d) Address decoding circuitry (e) Block Diagram( similar to slide 28) (f) Arrangement of memory and peripheral components( slide 29) (g) Control-section of the microcomputer( similar to slide 30) All assumptions made in the design must be clearly specified in your report. (60 marks)

Group contribution 10 marks;( Equal contribution from partners will fetch same marks for both partners) Report presentation 10 marks; Format of the Report 1. The report is to be written using Microsoft Word and diagrams to be neatly drawn using the same software package. 2. First page should be the assignment feedback cover sheet 3. Second Page should clearly indicate the individual contributions, indicating the % contribution to different areas ( such as contribution to drawing diagrams, writing report etc) 4. Third page onwards solution to the problems can be given. 5. (The assignment has to be submitted as a 'Word' document through learonline Website. ( Hint: First make a rough sketch of the solution on single sheets by hand before using the Microsoft Word package). Additional Instructions: 1. No more than 3 members are allowed per group. Include Group ID in the name of final document for sending via AssignIT. 2. Each group member can work individually on particular task by sharing the workload and submit only one copy of the report.

3. 2%/day penalty applies to late submissions and 2% penalty applies for not specifying the individual contribution to the overall understanding and success of the project.
