SCI 238 (S12) PROBLEM SET 2 DUE Thurs May 17 at the beginning of class

Note that problems from CP are from the (full) version of Cosmic Perspective, 6th edition, NOT the Essential Cosmic Perspective. 1. Suppose you live on the Moon and your home is located near the centre of the face that we see from Earth. (a) How long would your day be? By day I mean from when the Sun is on your meridian your local noon to the next noon. (b) If the Moon is full (as seen from Earth), what phase would you see for the Earth (new earth, rst-quarter earth, full earth, etc)? Would it be day or night on the Moon? Explain. (c) When you see sunrise, in what phase would the Moon be (as seen from the Earth)? In what phase would you see the Earth at this time? (d) What would you see if you were on the Moon during a total lunar eclipse? (e) What would you see if you were on the Moon during a total solar eclipse? 2. Cosmic Perspective, 6th ed., Chapter S1, Problem 49 3. The spectacular comet Hale-Bopp was last visible with the naked eye in 1997. (Some of you may even have seen it when you were very young!). Hale-Bopp is in orbit around the Sun. Its previous close approach to the Sun (perihelion), at a distance of 0.9 A.U., occured in the Golden Age of Greece in 367 B.C. (a) What is the semi-major axis of its orbit? (b) What is its aphelion distance (its farthest distance from the Sun)? (You may want to refer to Mathematical Insight 3.1). (c) Qualitatively, how would you describe the shape of its orbit? 4. Cosmic Perspective, 6th ed., Chapter 4, Problem 58.
