GATTACA The film Gattaca centers on the human genetic make-up as the foremost criteria for social demarcation,

justifying the widespread use of genetic engineering. Vincent, being naturally born with near-sightedness and heart disease, struggled from discrimination and had the burden of achieving perfection. He perpetuated fraud and became a con-artist in order to get aboard Gattaca. He assumed Jeromes identity because of the latters impressive genetic profile. The murder of the space mission director had put him on the suspect list although he later got out of the woods. He succeeded in flying aboard the space craft. The story ironically contrasts the success of a genetically disadvantaged individual with the failure of another who was deemed genetically superior. Vincent, triumphing over Jerome, symbolically represents the power of free will over predetermination. The story is a creative depiction of a future possibility in which the greatest social inequity stems out from the very blueprint that makes us human our genes. The main character tells us that our genes do not seal our destiny, that the human spirit can transcend any endeavour, no matter how insurmountable. In addition, the film raises concerns on the use of artificial reproductive technologies for eugenics or the improvement of genetic qualities. Advocating manipulation of the gene pool rather than taking biological chance does not necessarily spell disaster for our society. Elimination of hereditary diseases isnt a bad trade-off at all. We are cautioned though of a risk for a new form of social stratification based on genetics the valids and in-valids. The question is how much ramifications we can further go in improving our genes. Is there a limit to mans conquest in surpassing his biological shortcomings? We need to carefully explore what direction genetic engineering is shifting our civilization. As with any other technological upheaval, we need to make ethically driven decisions and actions. The movie had reminded us, There is no gene for the human spirit.
