A B ST R A C T
The leading topic of the
issue is SAFETY. The article
Who is to blame and what
must we do? by G. Sagirova
acquaints readers with the
most typical causes of
helicopters crashes. What
causes are technical ones and
when the blame lies with
pilot? Sometimes statistics shows us a very dramatic pictur e (p. 4-9).
The DESIGNING section is opened by article Coaxial main rotor
written by B. Burtzev, S. Selemenev and V. Vagis. It is devoted to
aeromechanics of coaxial-rotor helicopters. 95 % of w orld helicopters
fleet present single-rotor classical helicopters, nevertheless the interest
to coaxial-rotor helicopters is increasing now (p. 10-13).
The second report going under the heading is Mi-8MTV acoustic
characteristic (author E. Belov). To inv estigate the nature of noise means
to find some devices to reduce it. The reduction of noise level is the problem
of several aspects: medical, designing and economical (p. 14-15).

We continue the publication of the article Composite blades: packing
or spinning by Z. Shnurov. The author acquaints readers with the
perspectives of using both technologies. According to authors opinion, a
packing technology has good future because it allows to produce blades
of various geometry (forms) (p. 16-19).

The second article The spontaneous turn by I. Belichenko deals
with a very urgent problem: it is off-standar d behavior of helicopter in
a strong crosswind. The author is a pilot of Sakhalin Airline Company
and he has faced the spontaneous turn in his own practice. He gives
readers the benefit of his experience of overcoming the turn (p. 24-25).
The flight safety depends on the quality of remedial maintenance
which should be done in time. The conference of repr esentatives of
aircraft-repair enterprises was devoted to mor e complex problems of
helicopters repair. The conference was held by St.-P etersburg aircraft
repair company (SPARC) in February (p. 26-28).
Three reports are given under EVENT heading. As for designers, the
first flight of aircraft looks like a kids first step. The first flight of
Ka-60 multi-purpose helicopter was presented on 24th of December, 1999.
The flight lasted for 10 min. The flying height 300 m. The flight crew

members were: test pilot Vladimir Lavrov and test navigator Nikolai
Shakhov (p. 29).
For Ansat helicopter designed by Kazan Helicopter Plant designing
agency the first flight is the past event. On 25th of January, 2000, the
helicopter was presented to the Gazprom corporation which is one of the
biggest helicopter operators. Gazprom is considered to be in the market
for Ansat (p. 30-31).
One of the most important events which took place in February was
the 4th Russian Rotorcraft Forum. E.Ruzhitsky, vice-president of Russias
Helicopter Society acquaints our readers with the results of Societys
work in the period between two forums and achievements of Russias
designers, manufacturers and operator s of helicopters (p. 32-33).
The article New eyes for military aircraft goes under the EQUIPMENT
heading. It acquaints reader s with plans and perspectives of Ural OpticMechanical Plant, which produces optoelectronic target systems,
optoelectronic around-the-clock systems, thermal imagers and other
equipment for military aircraft (p. 34-35).
The MEDICINE heading cov ers one topic. The article written by S.
Skrebnev is Vibration and health. Vibration sometimes becomes a cause
of different operational diseases, e.g. it is a risk factor in pilot work.
Influence of vibration should be reduced. Hence the cooperation of
engineers and physicians should begin at the designing stage. It is the
only way to develop human-engineered r otorcraft (p. 36-37).
Two important dates are
mentioned in the JUIBILEE
heading. The first one is the
80-th anniv ersary of M.
Kupfer. He was the associate
of Nicolai Kamov and one of
the founders of Kamov firm.
But he was talented not only
in the helicopter-building
field. He was a brilliant
musician, painter and even maker of musical instruments. The article
The memory of rotorcraft designer was written by U. Savinsky, Kupfers
disciple (p. 38-39).
Now the Second Sikor sky Conference is being prepared. The article
Chosen by the sky by V. Micheev is devoted to greatest Russian
rotorcraft designer . It is also an invitation to the conference (p. 40-41).

presents the information
about the participation of
Kazan Helicopter Plant in
International Exhibitions
which took place in Malaysia,
Singapore, Republic of Chile and other countries (p. 42-44).
The development of Mi-4 helicopter was one of the dramatic pages of
Russias helicopter-building HISTORY. The production of main rotor blades
for the Mi-4 is the subject of report The problems with main rotor by
S. Mazo. Designers hav e to solve a lot of technological, social and
economical problems (p. 45-47).
We hope the WINDMILL heading hits our readers taste. Our life is full
of complex problems. But if you can laugh at y ourself y ou can overcome
these problems (p. 48).
IN MEMORIAM. On 31st of March Mikhail Nagibin, the Director General
of Rostvertol PLC passed away. Nagibin was one of those who formed the
policy and ideology of the branch, determined the strategy of its
