Team Investigations Assignment East-West Center SUSI 2012 Prior to SUSI, each participant developed a Personal Action Plan

(PAP) and website. Once in Hawaii, you will meet SUSI participants whose PAP is on the same environmental issue. Together you will be investigating solutions practiced in the US around food, water, energy, or natural resource management. SUSI participants with the same PAP topics should organize into a team to conduct investigations and teach each other. As a team, follow these steps: Step 1: Start reading Building a Green Movement and Changing the World (BGM). This text will serve as a guidebook for a successful PAP. Read the Introduction and Chapter 1 first. Pay special attention to the lessons contained within success stories about North Americas young environmental leaders. SUSI staff will help you test yourself on this book to ensure you are progressing. Step 2: Assign a specific role with specific outcomes for each team member. While in the US, you may also recruit American young environmental leaders to join your team. However, only each SUSI team member will have a specific role to play. Each officer will report to a SUSI staff supervisor whose name is listed next to the title. Each SUSI team member should choose one of these roles: Communications Officer (Supervisor: Harshini) - distribute invitations to SUSI events & develop a strategy to incentivize partners attending - collect displays from partners to communicate solutions at Galleries - ensure feedback is incorporated into Gallery presentations - contact organizations for meetings & send thank you notes (cc CM) - represent SUSI to the public, US State Department, US Congress & others PAP Officer (Supervisor: Lance) - support the evolution of each team members PAP - ensure each team members PAP website is up-to-date - support communication at meetings about team members PAPs Content Officer (Supervisor: Brian) - design evening learning & assessment opportunities for your team - distribute learning materials and assign written briefs - ensure participants read and understand assignments - ensure accurate content coverage at events Logistics Officer (Supervisor: Christina) - ensure the team has transportation and is early to all meetings and classes - ensure the team is dressed professionally for all meetings and classes - prevent sickness from spreading (ie. sharing drinks) - enforce team and Facebook curfew

Step 3: Identify the solutions worth investigating while in the United States. Start by reflecting on the pre-departure readings and reading about where SUSI EAP visited. Once you have ideas, develop a plan to investigate the solutions employed by NGOs, businesses, and/or government agencies on your topic. As a team, design your research program and arrange meetings. Your program should include background research on the solution being investigated, the organization, objectives of your visit, among others. Also ask SUSI staff and mentors for ideas. Step 4: Conduct pre-arranged investigations as a team. Each team member will be responsible for preparing her team in some capacity for these meetings. For example, Content Officers must ensure teams understand the topic being investigated. Communications Officers must investigate display materials that can be utilized by the team during Galleries. Logistics Officers must ensure everyone is on time and dressed appropriately. Step 5: Refine your PAP and website. Throughout SUSI your PAP should improve significantly. Read chapter 2 of Building a Green Movement (BGM) and on your website post information about your PAP 1) timeline 2) SMART goals 3) decision makers to target 4) developing a strategy 5) tactics. Also post your strategies for recruiting people (Ch. 3), creating publicity (Ch. 4), and finding financial support (Ch. 9). In the reading reflections page of your website, write your thoughts after reading about an environmental leader or organization and seeing his/her work. Step 6: Present your revised PAP at public events. In Hawaii, one event will target the public and SUSI partner organizations at ING Direct Caf in Waikiki. Another will be a brown bag seminar you might offer with an environmental leader whom you met in Hawaii. Together at these events, you will create a display and creatively share about the solutions investigated and the PAP you have designed. You should plan on reporting back on the progress of your PAP on August 15th 2012 and July 2013 to ensure positive evaluation by the East-West Center to your US Consulate/Embassy.
