Mediating the 2011 general election: Preliminary results from an analysis of newspaper and broadcast campaign coverage.

Introduction

Our team coded 1,440 articles and 46 hours of broadcasting during the official campaign.
This is the first ever such comparison of newspaper and broadcast coverage in Ireland. We concentrated on the which topics were covered.

Policy
The POLICY frame emphasises politics as a set of public policy choices and debates.

The Game
The GAME frames elections as the horserace and battle for voters, the images of politicians and political power as a goal in and of itself.

Conclusions
1. On average the 2011 election was framed as a public policy debate. Unusual in Ireland and internationally. More variation in newspaper market than in broadcast market. Most policy on early evening radio, least in Sunday tabloids.
