COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course builds on the aspects of the health/disease continuum. Studies in Nutrition and Biochemistry give the student an understanding of a significant factor for health and wellness. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Discuss concepts and principles of nutrition. 2. Discuss nutrition promotion and counseling. Cooperative and collaborative learning skills are used while collecting data for presentation and completing projects. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: 1. Explain why the study of nutrition is important to the dental assistant. 2. Describe the role of different food groups in the diet. 3. List the six areas of the food guide pyramid. 4. Discuss the meaning of recommended dietary (daily) allowance. 5. Recognize the signs of eating disorders. 6. Discuss the requirements for labeling food products. 7. COURSE OBJECTIVES / COMPETENCIES: On completion of this course the student should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of pharmacology by: 1. Defining pharmacology 2. Explaining the functions of the Controlled Substances Act and its five schedules 3. Describing drug abuse 4. Discussing methods to avoid drug abuse (dental personnel and patients) 5. Recognizing frequently used Latin abbreviations 6. Writing example prescriptions and adhering to the standard format 7. Charting the prescriptions for dental clinic patients 8. Listing and describing the different routes for drug administration 9. Suggesting methods for drug handling and storage 10. Describe csommonly prescribed medications and their effects on dentistry 11. ANGEL LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: It is expected that students will log on to Angel LMS regularly to check for announcements, notes & do assignments. Students MUST have access to computer and the internet outside of class at least two times a week to access these materials. The college library and student lab on campus do provide access to Angel LMS. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION POLICY: As adult learners, it is expected that 100% attendance will be maintained for all lectures. You are required to call my office or email me by if you are unable to attend DENT-214 lecture class. It is your responsibility to make arrangements with a classmate to pick up extra lecture notes. Information about tardiness and absenteeism will be relayed to the prospective employers requesting information about former students. Active participation in in-class quizzes and individual small group activities during class will contribute to your final grade. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS: Please do your best to treat others with courtesy and respect. Avoid talking when instructor or another student has the floor. Practice good listening skills. Avoid disruptive behavior. ***Cell Phones: Cell phone use is not allowed in the classroom. MAKE-UP PROCEDURES: Examinations / ANGEL LMS assignments may be made-up only by special arrangement at the instructors discretion. If the student fails to arrange for a make-up exam on the first day back, he/she forfeits the right to take the exam. ***No make-up for the FINAL EXAM.
