APPENDIX I
PART 1 ALLOWABLE NOZZLE LOADS DURCO PUMPS (ASME B73.1M)
FIGURE I-1: Axis System

The allowable nozzle loads listed in Figure I-2 may be applied to any Mark III Standard Horizontal, Sealmatic, Lo-Flo, Recessed Impeller, or Unitized Self-Priming pumps in Ductile cast iron, all Durco 18-8 alloys, Chlorimet, Durimet 20, Carbon Steel, Monel, and Inconel. The allowable loads must be multipled by 0.70 for pumps made of nickel, titanium, zirconium and high chrome iron.

The loads listed in Figure I-2 are the combined values resolved to the center of the pump, except for the Fr + Mr/3 limits, which apply to the separate suction and discharge flanges. Some piping analysis programs calculate forces and moments on each flange, and do not translate them to a common point at the center of the pump. The formulas in Figure I-3 and Dimensions in Figure I-4 can be used to translate the forces and moments on each flange to the common center point.

Pump Mounting Please review Pump Mounting in Section 9.2. 1. Free mounted pump: the pump is free to move with the piping. A. the piping supports the pump. In this case, the suction and discharge pipes should be supported close to the pump to carry the pumps dead weight. B. The dead weight of the pump may also be supported underneath the casing foot or the optional pump stand. However, the pump is free to move with the piping in all directions except for vertically downward. In both cases, piping loads are limited only by the casing limitations. These are the recommended mounting methods as they reduce piping loads. 2. Rigid mounted pump: the pump is fixed in place and resists movement of the piping. A. The pump is supported by the optional pump stand that has been tied down to prevent pump movement. In this case, piping loads impart stress upon the casing and the pump stand. Piping loads are limited by both the casing and pump stand limitations. It may be necessary to use pipe supports to reduce loads on the pump assembly. Casing Limitations 1. To simplify or eliminate additional calculations, the In-Line casing may be treated as a spool of schedule 40 pipe with diameter equal to the discharge, length equal to the face to face dimension (SD) and material equal to that of the casing. In cases where pump movement is limited, the constraint may be placed at the center of the spool. Stress in pump flanges and bolting should not be ignored. This method allows for the use of automated piping programs to determine the acceptability of loads. 2. The casing limitations can also be determined by Hydraulic Institute Standard, ANSI/HI 9.6.2. For complete details, please review the standard. All information necessary to complete the evaluation is given below. A. Determine the appropriate casing Material Group from Figure I-7. B. Find the correct factor in Figure I-8 based upon the Material Group and operating temperature. Interpolation may be used to determine the correction factor for a specific temperature. C. Apply the correction factor to the allowable loads found in Figure I-9. The corrected loads are the allowable casing loads. D. Calculate the applied piping loads at the casing flanges according to the coordinate system found in Figure I-6. Please note the coordinate system used is that which has been adopted by Hydraulic Institute and is different from those previously used by Flowserve. The 12 forces and moments possible are designated as FXS, FYS, FZS, MXS, MYS, MZS, FXD, FYD, FZD, MXD, MYD, and MZD. For example, FXS designates Force in the x direction on the suction flange and FYD designates Force in the y direction on the discharge flange. MXS designates the Moment about the x-axis on the suction flange. E. The absolute value of the applied suction loads divided by the corrected allowable loads must be less than or equal to one. Also, the absolute value of the applied discharge load divided by the corrected allowable load must be less than or equal to one. For example: FXS FXD MZD 1.0, 1.0 1.0 FXCorrected FXCorrected MZCorrected FIGURE I-6: Axis System

Pump Stand Limitations In cases where the pump is rigidly mounted by the pump stand, both the casing limitations and the pump stand limitations must be met. Due to the limited load capacity of the pump stands, it may be necessary to restrain the piping to prevent excessive loads. A. Ensure all applied loads are within the allowable limits of the casing. B. Translate the flange loads using the formulae found in Figure I-10. Dimensional variables SRS, SRD and RS can be found in Figure I-9. C. Calculate FT and FN using the formulae found in Figure I-10. D. FT and FN must be less than FT MAX and FN MAX found in Figure I-11. E. FT and FN must meet the combination formulae found in Figure I-11.
