Ms. Kim Kinder Personnel Board of Jefferson County 2121 8th Avenue North Birmingham, Alabama 35203 RE: City of Birmingham Municipal Court Probation Officers Dear Ms. Kinder; This letter is in regards to the merit employees that are classified as Probation Officers for the Birmingham Municipal Court. I am a City of Birmingham retiree interested in maintaining the core principals of the merit system. As you are aware, the City of Birmingham has employed Probation Officers who provide an intricate service to the criminal justice system for many years. The Probation Officers screen, investigate and implement all conditions of court ordered probation. I am inquiring as to the number of merit employees functioning as Probation Officers who are currently assigned to the Birmingham MunicipalCourts. It is my understanding that the position of Probation Officer with the Birmingham Municipal Court System has been summarily eliminated. It is also my understanding that these positions have been out sourced to a private company, Judicial Correction Services (JCS). If the positions that were formerly held by merit employees have been eliminated, then I am requesting a copy ofthe Board approved contract between the City of Birmingham and JCS. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,
~~
