Observations from the 2012 U.S. Womens Open

By Kevin Struck I had the opportunity to attend the recent womens golf championship at Blackwolf Run on behalf of The Kohler Villager. Having also attended in 1998, I was looking forward to this years tournament, and I was not disappointed. The grounds were beautiful, the fans were friendly and respectful, and the players, especially the winner, South Korean Na Yeon Choi, displayed skill and an appreciation for the opportunity to play for the championship in Kohler. The hot weather, of course, dominated conversations the first two days of the tournament. I heard the word brutal more than once from fans and reporters, but the players, for the most part, seemed to take it in stride. If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt, Dean Martin once joked. Plenty of drinking occurred during play, but it wasnt the kind Martin was referring to. Lexi Thompson, the 17-year-old American prodigy whose average driving distance is the same as mens world number one Luke Donald (274 yards), said she drank at least one bottle of water per hole, and other players echoed her. But Thompson was quick to add that she was from south Florida, was used to the heat, and played every day, no matter how hot. German golfer Sandra Gal, who finished third, added, You know, I think we got a little preview last week in Arkansas. It was pretty similar, so I knew how to prepare and what to do out there. Obviously, it was quite draining, but if you keep hydrated its fine.

Village Centennial celebration coming up August 3-4

The Village of Kohler will celebrate its 100th birthday Friday and Saturday, August 3-4, 2012. SkyHouse Band will kick off the festivities on Friday night, August 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the ravine bowl, with fireworks during intermission. Concessions during the concert will be provided by the Kohler Fire Department. On Saturday, a special Centennial parade will wind its way through the Village featuring nearly 30 groups including the Wisconsin Badgers Marching Band, Milwaukee Brewers racing sausages, and a number of local dance teams, equestrian groups, floats, and much more! The parade begins at 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highland Dr. and Orchard Rd. (in front of the Design Center), and travels down School St., then Valley Rd. to Lost Woods Park, where a community picnic will begin at approximately 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Picnic goers may bring their own picnic basket, or purchase food and drinks from the Kohler Police Athletic League. The annual Doll Buggy Parade will take place in conjunction with the Villages Centennial parade on Saturday, August 4. Kids are invited to decorate bikes, wagons, (and doll buggies) and meet at Parking Lot C of the Kohler Company at 11:00 a.m. (Lot C is the same lot used for parking for the U.S. Womens Open. By the end of the tournament it wasnt the heat that caused the most trouble for the playersit was the course itself. Scores soared on Saturday and Sunday, with only two players finishing the tournament under par. Lee Trevino once remarked, Columbus went around the world in 1492. That isn't a lot of strokes when you consider the course. Columbus wouldve had his work cut out for him at Blackwolf Run. Poor Michelle Wie began the weekend in second place, four under par and full of hope. She faded quickly, however, ending the tournament tied for 35th place, ten shots over par. South Korean Jimin Kang described the challenges of the course well when she said, Every single shot, every single hole I gotta like pay attention every single shot, because theres no shot you can take, awe, just let me grab

a driver and rip it and see what happens. No. No. No. Speaking of Wie, there was a buzz among the fans early Saturday prior to her appearance. A headline grabber since she burst onto the scene as a 13-year-old, the slender six-foot-one-inch tall player from Hawaii always attracts attention. Thats what I want to see, said one fan walking toward the first tee, how tall she is. By Sunday Wie hadnt lost any of her height, but the buzz was gone anyway, as she had fallen well off the leader board. Wie wasnt the only one who had problems. After a wayward tee shot on 11, I overheard 2007 Open champ Cristie Kerrs frustration boil over as she barked, Dang it! What are you doing?! (I hadnt been doing anythingjust watching, honest.) Calling all Kohler grads: multi-class reunion planned for Centennial weekend
Kohler graduates! Catch up with old friends and classmates by attending the Kohler High School Grad reunion on Saturday, August 4 from 6:00-11:00 p.m. at Lost Woods Park (corner of Valley Rd. and CTH PP). The event will follow the Village of Kohler Centennial parade/picnic, which will end at 4:00 p.m. Food, beer, and wine will be available for purchase, (carry-ins will also be allowed). took what little consolation they could. Although she was a dismal 10 over for the day, amateur Emma Talley smiled broadly and patted her caddy on the back after she birdied the 12th hole. After the tournament was over, I had time to reflect on the differences between the 1998 and 2012 events. One obvious difference was the impact of technology. In 1998 none of the players had Facebook pages and no one was tweeting updates from the course. In fact, your cell phoneif you had onehad to stay in the car in 1998. This year, in a first for the USGA, cell phones were allowed if they were kept on vibrate. Members of the media could leave their pencils behind their ears at this years tournament, because a large number of interviews were transcribed and emailed directly to their inboxes. That would have been an unknown luxury in 1998. Halfway through the tournament my uncle in Florida texted me that he was watching on television and the course looked beautiful. Im sure the course was beautiful in 1998 too, but I doubt whether my uncle was watching the tournament on a large HD TV like he was this year. Oddly enough, the leaderboards scattered throughout the course seemed to be the one component that had avoided technologys influence. It was almost humorous to see the volunteer marshals scrambling by hand for the right numbers and letters to manually keep the boards up to date. Another difference, post 9/11, was, unfortunately, the emphasis that had to be placed on security. There were no major incidents, however, so law enforcement officials are to be commended for their efforts. Finally, anyone could see there was a difference in the players. Todays players are younger, in better shape, and more diverse in their origins. Se Ri Paks victory in 1998 inspired an entire generation of Asian players, including 2012 champion Na Yeon Choi, who watched the 1998 event on television as a nine-year-old and made up her mind she was going to be a golfer. Looks like that decision worked out pretty well for her.

WisDOT details Highway 23 and County Road Y project

By Kevin Struck Staff from the Wisconsin Department of Transportations Northeast Region hosted an information meeting at the Kohler Village Hall on June 26 to provide details about road work that will close parts of the State Highway 23 and County Road Y interchange for several months in early 2014. Comments from the public were also solicited. The improvements are being proposed to improve driver safety, as well as pavement and structure conditions. Although the time line could change, work is slated to begin in March of 2014 and take four months, according to WisDOT project manager Paul Brauer. Under the current plan, the two off-ramps will be shut down and worked on for two months, and then the same procedure will be followed for the two on-ramps. At least one lane in each direction on County Road Y and Highway 23 will remain open during both shut downs. Access to nearby properties will be maintained during the road work. WisDOT hopes to keep the Old Plank Road Trail open as a paved surface where it crosses County Road Y. However, for short periods when a paved surface becomes too difficult to accommodate, the trail will at least be accessible as a gravel surface. WisDOT intends to replace the deteriorating pavement on all four of the interchange ramps and will replace the pavement on County Road Y from 120 feet south of the Old Plank Road Trail to 300 feet north of the westbound Highway 23 ramp terminal intersection. The project includes a bridge deck overlay and repainting of the steel on the County Road Y structure over Highway 23. There will be two design changes as well: 1) the free flow lane merging southbound onto County Road Y from the westbound Highway 23 off-ramp will be reconstructed as a standard intersection approach to improve driver vision and safety, and 2) an exclusive right turn lane will be added from northbound County Road Y to the Highway 23 westbound on-ramp. The improvements resulting from the reconstruction and reconditioning are expected to last about 20 years.

Hogan, Valicenti elected to Badger Boys State

Kohler High School selected Connor Hogan and Tim Valicenti as 2012 representatives to the 71st session of Badger Boys State. Badger Boys State is a youth leadership program sponsored by the Wisconsin American Legion designed to educate youth in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. The program has been developed on the fundamental principle that young people learn best by actively participating in the process. As much as possible, the mechanics of government in Badger Boys State are modeled after Wisconsin's own government at the city, county and state levels. Hogan, the son of Karen and Rod Hogan, is a junior at Kohler High School and was elected Treasurer for his party at Badger Boys State. He is actively involved in Varsity Soccer and Basketball, Key Club, Future Problem Solvers, Engineering Club, Swing Choir and National Honor Society. He is also a volunteer soccer coach and a lunch buddy at Kohler Elementary School and plays soccer for FC Milwaukee. Valicenti, the son of Tom and Jeanne Valicenti, is a junior at Kohler High School and was elected Treasurer at Boy's Badger State. He is actively involved in Varsity Tennis, Math Team, Engineering Club, Testing the Waters, National Honor Society, and math and science tutoring. He plays tennis for the Kohler USTA team and was a 2012 WIAA Boys Tennis doubles medalist. Badger Boys State representatives are selected by high schools throughout Wisconsin based on their qualifications as good students, exhibiting strong leadership skills and being in the top of their class. Since the program's inception in 1939, Badger Boys State has had a positive impact on the lives of over 62,500 students. Previous Badger Boys State graduates are prominent today as leaders in public office, business and the armed forces. The week long program was held in June at Ripon College. The annual program brings together approximately 850 high school students from across Wisconsin to create a 51st state known as Badger Boys State.

Used bicycles needed for Countys ReBike program

ReBike is in need of bicycle donations! Since the spring of 2010, Sheboygan Countys ReBike program has provided over 400 donated bicycles to area residents in need. The ReBike initiative, which is entirely operated by a group of dedicated volunteers, is one of the states first formal earn-a-bike programs. Residents from Sheboygan County in need of basic transportation are invited to visit the basement of Paradigm Coffee & Music on Wednesday evenings between 5:30-7:30 p.m. Once they are made aware of the rules required for ReBike sessions, they are guided in their search for an appropriate bike to fit their needs. Following the selection process, the ReBike participant works with volunteers for approximately three hours to make the bike ready for road use. This is accomplished by working together to perform any necessary repairs, replacements, or adjustments. The volunteers are skilled in bicycle repair, so no experience is necessary from the participant. The only skill needed is the willingness to learn how to work on a bicycle that, once ready, is free for recipients to take home as their own. Over the past two years, bicycles have been donated from individuals around the County, while Wolfs Cycle and Fitness, Sheboygan Bicycle Company, and Terrys Bike Shop have supported ReBike by providing parts or assistance. The Sheriffs Department and City of Sheboygan Police Department have also supplied unclaimed bicycles from their inventories. However, because of the overwhelming success of ReBike, the program is always in need of bicycle donations. Summer is busier than ever for ReBike, and it is also a great time to clean out the garage of unwanted or unused bicycles. Donations can be brought to Paradigm Coffee & Music, located at 1202 N 8th St. in Sheboygan, between 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. September completion anticipated

Event-only interchange for Whistling Straits resumes

Construction of an event-only interchange at I-43 and Rowe Road providing easier access to Whistling Straits during major golfing events will take place from late July until September. A southbound ramp was constructed in 2010, but work was delayed after landowners filed a lawsuit, which they lost in court. At the 2004 PGA Championship, traffic became backed up on I-43 and local roads as drivers exited on Highway 42 and used local roads to proceed to Whistling Straits. Northbound I-43 may be reduced to one lane of traffic for approximately one week, and Rowe Road may be closed to through traffic for approximately one week. All lanes of I-43 will remain open to traffic during peak traffic times of weekends, holidays, and Packer games.

Kohler resident Ryan Halverson finished a memorable season of pitching in the difficult Eastern Wisconsin Conference, compiling a 5-0 record for the Sheboygan Falls Falcons. Halverson was first in the conference in shut outs and winning percentage, and second in total wins. He was also among the conference leaders in strikeouts (averaging one every inning), innings pitched, complete games, opponent batting average, and appearances. Halverson pitched in a total of eight games, with all the games ending in a victory for the Falcons. The team finished the season 22-4 securing the number two seed, and is one of the favorites to make it to state.

Sheboygan Lakers Figure Skating Club earns medals a midwest challenge

The Sheboygan Lakers Figure Skating Club recently held their Annual Awards Banquet. The clubs Blue and Gold Synchronized Skating Teams were presented with medals earned in US Figure Skatings Midwest Synchro Challenge. Both teams had successful seasons, competing in Wisconsin and Illinois. Members of the Blue Team include Kohler residents Katie Lindow and Larissa Paseta, along with Jennifer Edwards, Jenna Hemenway, Olivia Honeck, Lindsey Karczewski, Brittany Rusch and Gemma Sutkiewicz. Members of the Gold Team include Kohler residents Hannah Post, Sophie Jacobson and Lauren Quasis, along with Sydney Albrecht, Jenneh Egerer, Mary Graebner, Madalyn Miller, Emily Radue and Julia Sheldon. Both teams are coached by Alexis Scott and Liz Weidner. The Little Lakers Synchronized Skating Team coached by Giulianna Sutkiewicz was honored for their excellent season. Members include Karen Bergen, Makayla Drescher, Caitlin McEvoy, Grace Mooney, Libby Tournour, Dayton Thiel and Julia Zahn. Giulianna Sutkiewicz, a graduating high school senior, was recognized as the 2012 winner of the Sheboygan Blue Line Rachel Jorgenson/ Kyle Fredericks Memorial Scholarship. The following skaters were acknowledged for passing skating tests in the 2011-212 season: Vadim Dekker, Jennifer Edwards, Jenna Hemenway, Olivia Honeck, Lindsey Karczewski, Katie Lindow, Larissa Paseta, Allison Ritt, Brittany Rusch, Kasey Scott and Gemma Sutkiewicz. The club honored the 2011 State Games of America medalists: Vadim Dekker, Larissa Paseta, Alexis Scott, Kasey Scott, Gemma Sutkiewicz, Giulianna Sutkiewicz and Giovanna Sutkiewicz. The club also honored the 2012 Badger State Games medalists: Sydney Albrecht, Lilee Dodgson, Jennifer Edwards, Olivia Honeck, Lindsey Karczewski, Katie Lindow, Larissa Paseta, Brittany Rusch, Alexis Scott, Kasey Scott, Gemma Sutkiewicz, Giulianna Sutkiewicz and Liz Weidner. Melissa Krauska was acknowledged for winning a silver medal with the Fond du Lac Blades Intermediate team and Kasey Scott was recognized for winning a pewter medal with the Western Michigan University Collegiate team at the 2012 Synchronized Skating National Championships.

Girls excel in Hershey State Track Meet

Several area youth including Grace Nugent, Nicole Konecke, Kaleigh Roeder, Cecelia Zielke, Jenna Silvestri and Brianna Kleckner excelled in the 400 relay at the local and district Hershey Track Meets to qualify for the 2012 Hershey State Meet in West Allis on June 23. Over the span of three weeks during the month of June the girls, competing in the girls 1112 age group, ran at three different venues with the members of the relay team changing slightly with each race. A Kohler quartet of Nugent, Konecke, Roeder and Zielke began the journey to the Hershey State Track Meet by finishing in 1st place at the local City of Sheboygan Hershey Track Meet on Thursday, June 7 which qualified them to participate in the Hershey District Track Meet at LuxemburgCasco Athletic Complex in Luxemburg, Wisconsin on June 14. The 4x100 relay team consisting of Kohler students Zielke, Konecke, Silvestri and Nugent continued the team's quest to state at the district meet by competing against three other teams and taking 1st place qualifying them to run at the Wisconsin Hershey State Track Meet in West Allis on June 23. Participants from across the state who finished first in their events at Hershey district meets held in West Allis, LaCrosse, Luxemburg-Casco and Madison gathered at the West Allis Athletic Complex to compete in the state meet this past Saturday. The Kohler trio of Zielke, Konecke and Roeder was joined by Sheboygan Falls native Kleckner to form the 400 relay team that competed at the State Meet and finished in 5th place with a time of 1:04.25.
