Location: New York City, NY, USA Date and time: 9 July 2011, Eastern Time Zone Estimated number of participants: 130

Activity (a few sentences): Event started on time (at 10am) with participants signing up and providing contact information for future references. Yellow ribbons, yellow t-shirts from walmart, and Bersih 2.0 stickers were handed out to participants. Memorandum to the consulate general of new york was passed around to participants for signing. Participants are comingling with each other as if it was a reunion. Bersih 2.0 NYC took a picture in front of the consulate general before we moved across the street to accommodate a fast growing crowd. Officer from Department of State was there to facilitate the event as well as the NYPD. Organizing committee briefed the crowd about the purpose of Bersih 2.0 and the participants are spending time writing their reason of supporting Bersih 2.0 and their wishes for future Malaysia. Meanwhile, reporters from different media group, local or overseas are interviewing Bersih 2.0 NYC. Then, we marched a short distance to the historical place that has symbolical significance to principles of political oppression and freedom of speech, Ralph Bunche Park. There the crowd took turn to hold up banners and posters facing the UN building while others took turn to stand up the stage to express their hope for Malaysia. After drawing attention from a lot of tourists and local passerby on the street and through the park, we marched back to the Consulate General of Malaysia and ended the Bersih 2.0 NYC by singing Negaraku. Location: Brisbane, Australia Date and Time: 09.07.2011 1100-1300 Estimated number of participants: 100 Activities: The crowd were mainly of Malaysian origin, along with a few supportive Australians. With a banner emblazoned with the words Bersih 2.0 and the eight demands as the backdrop, the day began with a welcome speech, followed by a moments silence to think about our loved ones in KL. Many speakers took to the microphone, including Ng Sze Han who spoke at length about the reforms required. We sang Negara ku with pride and the solidarity was apparent amongst us. A few people handed out fliers to passers by, whilst discussing the Malaysians plight. As a Malaysian singer sang, the crowd slowly dissipated, leaving in very high spirits. Although not amongst our friends and family in KL, we did all that we could on a cold, blustery morning in Brisbane. Uncles, aunties, kids and the vociferous were in attendance, along with the locals. A short statement on the 8 Bersih 2.0 demands and the peoples call to the current government was read out, followed by chants/shout (also towards the SB cameraman behind the window of the Consulate), the customary Negara Ku and show of allegiance with shouts of Daulat Tuanku. Many contributed in their own way to make this a very memorable event. Location: Canberra, Australia Date and time: 1230 GMT+10, 9 July 2001 Estimated number of participants: 40 Activity: Sunny big blue skies on wintry Federal Hill where green, white and blue met was just perfect for what turned out to be a bumper yellow crowd for Bersih2.0 solidarity and kueh. With most students away on semester break (many in Melbourne tho, bumping up Bersih numbers there ;), the handful from campus who did turn up mingled and spoke up for Bersih2.0 and electoral reforms alongside a diverse diaspora of Malaysians working and living in Canberra. Ten Malaysians of different generations and persuasions shared with the crowd their idealism, and how the electoral reforms raised by Bersih along with enfranchising Malaysians overseas with the vote are fundamental in building a better Malaysia. And we applauded the demand for the immediate release of the PSM 6, condemning detention without trial. We ended by recapping the weeks successes at the Australian parliament, where MPs from all sides wore the Bersih2.0 t-shirts and spoke up in the chamber supporting Bersihs agenda of improving Malaysian democracy. And so it was time for photos, and a sunny picnic of kueh lapis, pandan cake, pulut manis and other tasty snacks on the lawns in front of parliament house. Also exhorted the government to keep to human rights conventions. 5. Reading of A. Samad Said's poem, Peludah Warna. 6. Discussions on post-Bersih activities: Mainly in uniting interested Malaysians in Canada, and targeted letter-writing campaigns. Also invitations for makan and lepak within a month.

Additional Notes:

Longer story written here: http://www.facebook.com/notes/angeline-woon/bersih-20-solidarity-incanada/368401564958 http://www.youtube.com/user/BersihCanada From what I can gather from speaking to participants, and from private communications online, there are many interested Malaysians in Canada. Unfortunately, they're all in different cities all over this vast nation. There will likely be a website set up (not everyone has Facebook, it was pointed out) to unite our effort.

Location: Adelaide, South Australia Victoria Square Fountain Date and time: 9 July 2011 (Saturday) 2.00 - 3.00pm GMT (+10) Estimated number of participants: 140 Activity (a few sentences): The crowd gradually trickled in even at 2.00pm. It wasnt the best weather with the cold wind and the occasional drizzle of rain. And still our numbers gradually swelled to 140! The group surprised themselves at the size of the turn out and were mingling and blowing up yellow balloons. Organizer began with a speech at 2.05pm, explaining how BERSIH is not the Opposition vehicle that some in the media have caricatured it to be, why BERSIHs goals are relevant and what overseas Malaysians should do to support BERSIH (we collected donations in support of BERSIH Malaysia). After the talk, it was open mic session, where audience were invited to step forward to share some words on why they felt it was important to be there today. This was followed with the singing of NegaraKu and then more blowing up of balloons and a photo session with the BERSIH banner. Additional Notes: It was interesting to observe that people stayed on to chat at the fountain well after the event was due to finish. I suppose there is an untapped interest in engaging with Malaysians who cared about events back home (beyond the usual culture/cuisine/career interest that seem to dominate the Malaysian groups here).
