14th and U doesnt need a
restaurant in municipal space
Frank Reeves was a lawyer for the
NAACP who served on the legal team
that ended school segregation in Brown
v. Board of Education. He also got Marion
Barry out of some legal troubles before Bar-
ry was an elected ofcial. For both of those
reasons, hes the namesake of the municipal
center at 14th and U streets.
It would be tting, just as the NAACP has
endorsed marriage equality for gays and
lesbians, for the Frank Reeves Municipal
Center to house the D.C. Center, which pro-
vides services for the local LGBT commu-
nity. Gay organizations such as the Mautner
Project and Whitman-Walker Health, along
with community groups such as the Me-
ridian Hill Neighborhood Association and
the U Street Neighborhood Association,
backed the move. DC Log Cabin Repub-
licans happily joined that list of supporters.
Nine of 13 members of the D.C. Coun-
cil Jim Graham, Jack Evans, Mary Cheh,
Muriel Bowser, Tommy Wells, David Cata-
nia, Michael Brown, Vincent Orange, and
Phil Mendelson signed letters support-
ing the move. Unfortunately, the municipal
building decided to go with the highest
bidder, rumored to be a restaurant.
On one hand, this seems odd. A mu-
nicipal building should be giving priority to
public projects, and the D.C. Center would
seem a better candidate for the space than
a chic eatery. This would seem doubly so
with so much of the Council behind it.
On the other hand, this is Washington.
Our local government spent about $10.4
billion in FY 2011. The city of Los Ange-
les, despite serving about 3 million more
people and covering several hundred more
square miles, got by with $6.9 billion. The
issue at hand is that our Council spends a
bloated budget with remarkably little over-
sight: no county board of supervisors or
state government reins in the Council. D.C.
Council members get tremendous leeway
to reward donors.
A shrewd restaurateur, in all likelihood,
has quietly donated money to various
Council candidates (who wont be removed
by voters but by federal investigations). Of
course, the restaurant owner would spend
a few thousand dollars on a Council race.
Given that the jumbo slice places fre-
quently clear $10,000 in a single weekend,
getting space in a prime location like 14th
and U is a no-brainer.
The worst that is likely to happen is that
these various Council members will issue
press releases saying harsh things about
the restaurateur, who will cry all the way to
the bank. As for D.C. taxpayers, those fu-
ture press releases will mean as much as the
Council members previous letters of sup-
port for the Reeves Building hosting the DC
Center: nothing.

Virginia remains
conservative, but change is
underway
By SEAN HOLIHAN & JAMES LEWIS
Last month marked the 45th anniversary
of the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling on Lov-
ing v. Virginia, the historic decision striking
down the ban on interracial marriage. To-
day, the LGBT community and their allies
continue the ght to strike down similar
bans that infringe on the basic rights of
personal happiness and liberty.
In May, following many legislative ac-
complishments for LGBT Americans,
President Obama came out in support of
marriage equality, a huge victory in the
long battle. Following the presidents his-
toric statement, other leaders stood up
to echo his voice. A new day had arrived.
For many years, the campaign for mar-
riage equality has harkened back to the
civil rights movement. The civil rights
campaign had two arms: legal and de-
monstrative. It was a war waged in seg-
regated courthouses and segregated bus
terminals. Each campaign was built on a
fundamental belief in either the blind
fairness of the American justice system or
in the base humanity of all mankind.
Critical civil rights victories were
achieved in the courtrooms with land-
mark decisions such as Brown v. Board
and Loving v. Virginia. The 2003 case that
struck down sodomy laws, Lawrence v.
Texas, will one day be listed as part of our
generations civil rights victories.
Virginia has historically been the con-
servative voice, ghting against change to
keep the old ways alive. However, a shift
is growing. Organizations including the
Virginia Young Democrats (VAYD) and the
entire Democratic Party of Virginia have
endorsed marriage equality and called for
its addition to the 2012 party platform.
This is no longer the ght of urban lib-
erals from Arlington and Alexandria. The
ght has been picked up by welders and
ship workers in Newport News, sons and
daughters of coal miners in Dickenson
County, doctors and nurses in Lynchburg
and lawyers and professors in Roanoke.
The VAYD president, Isaac Sarver, told
the Blade, We should not live in a coun-
try or Commonwealth that discriminates
against someone or limits their rights be-
cause of who they are. Over the years,
the VAYD have always strived to take a
forward stance on LGBT issues by insist-
ing on the repeal of Dont Ask, Dont
Tell, demanding an expanded list of
protected individuals including gender
identity and sexual orientation, and call-
ing for passage of the Employment Non-
Discrimination Act.
Times are changing and Americans are
slowly moving forward on civil rights for
all but work remains. This work begs the
question, How do we win in the states?
We win in the states in courtrooms
and by electing progressive open-mind-
ed leaders who hold the Constitution of
the United States and its goals of es-
tablish justice, promote the general
welfare, and secure the blessings of
liberty for ourselves and our prosper-
ity to be fundamental to all decisions.
Guided by these principles, civil rights
for all are ensured.
Winning marriage equality in the states
We win in the states by electing open-minded leaders who hold
the Constitution and its goals of establish justice, promote the
general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves
and our prosperity to be fundamental to all decisions.
Sean Holihan is a former president of VAYD and
currently works for NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. James
Lewis is VAYDs communications director and a former
senior policy analyst at a Washington think tank.

Activists, lmmakers
prepare for Intl AIDS
Conference with busy
lineup of local events
By ERIN DURKIN
As Washington gears up to host the
International AIDS Conference for the rst
time in 22 years, local organizations have
planned a bounty of free or independent
events for those who could not afford the
$150-$1,045 registration fee.
Global Village, an international
organization that brings together leaders,
researchers and performers from all over
the world to increase awareness of HIV/
AIDS, is hosting several sessions within the
conference ranging from video screenings
and art exhibitions to networking zones
and meeting rooms. Everything the
Global Village is hosting is free and open
to delegates and locals.
We are trying to connect science,
research and community, coordinator
Joseph Elias says. It is important that the
D.C. community participates to get a grasp
of what is happening locally and globally.
Several of the events will be geared
toward youth under the age of 30 dealing
with HIV/AIDS.
Emily Carson, youth program
coordinator at Global Village, says the
focus on youth has been in demand.
Young people are disproportionally
affected by HIV, she says. In the
conference in 2000, there were only 50
young people, and they said this is a severe
problem, no one is speaking for us.
Among the many attractions in the
Global Village area, there will be an
interactive story telling booth called,
Generations HIV. The booth looks like a
photo booth, but it records video instead.
The booth was created by Marc
Smolowitz and Jrg Fockele, both San
Francisco-based lmmakers, as part of
their HIV Story Project. The booth has
been featured three times in the San
Francisco Bay area and has so far collected
about 250 clips. The HIV Story Project is
a non-prot organization that compiles
multi-platform story telling and short lms
about living with HIV/AIDS.
The booth is a conversation starter,
Smolowitz says. It is to connect different
generations of people living with HIV. You can
ask questions of different generations, answer
questions or record your personal story.
Smolowitz and Fockele are currently
trying to start an archive online where all
the videos will be posted.
Along with the booth, the HIV Story
Project team also has a movie screening
at the International AIDS Film Festival,
which is occurring in conjunction with the
conference from July 24-25. The lm is
titled, Still Around, and is a compilation
of 15 short lms portraying different
people living with HIV/AIDS in the San
Francisco area. The people were paired
with 16 different directors and had direct
say in their own lms. The lms vary, and
include stories about how people are
thriving with the disease. One subject is
a man who copes with his HIV-positive
status through a hooking ritual. Another is
a couple that marries, has a daughter and
faces HIV/AIDS together.
Fockele says the lm is an update of
what the face of HIV/AIDS looks like in the
U.S. and in Europe today.
In Europe and the U.S. there are
mostly historic lms about HIV and AIDS,
he says. What we went out to do is to get
a lm that is right here, right now.
The movie is opening the festival on July
24 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10, and a pass for
all four lms is $25. For more information
about the International AIDS Film Festival
2012, visit internationalaidslmfestival.org.
The lm festival and several other
community events are a part of the AIDS2012
Reunion, a resource for conference
attendees to see what local events are
taking place outside the main conference.

Its never easy to go back to school later in life, but through hard work and
dedication, Brian Markowski managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA and graduate with
both bachelors and masters degrees in information systems through Strayer
University while balancing family life with his partner and two stepchildren, Rico
and Myles.
The 43-year-old Air Force vet and Middletown, Conn., native, has been
in Washington since the mid-90s after stints in St. Louis; Biloxi, Miss.;
Pensacola, Fla.; Germany and more. Markowski, known as Ski among
friends, was honored in June at the universitys commencement ceremony
for his commitment to academic excellence and the community. He
also volunteers with the Capital Area Food Bank and My Sisters Place.
Markowski and his partner, David Gilmer, live in D.C.s Bloomingdale
neighborhood. Theyve been together six years. Markowski enjoys dancing
and spending time with family and friends in his free time.

2 JULY 13, 2012 QUEERY: 20 QUESTI ONS FOR BRI AN MARKOWSKI
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT
AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST
PERSON TO TELL?
Since 1997. It was hardest to tell my
mom and dad because I did not want to
be rejected. I actually had to make two
separate trips to the upper East Coast to
tell them. I told my mom one weekend
and since my dad was not around on
the rst trip, I had to make a second trip
to tell him. My mom and dad are not
married so they do not live together.
WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO?
I would have to say Ellen DeGeneres.
When Ellen came out she made her
career and personal life an open window
and society was waiting to throw stones.
She held her own, stayed true to herself
and those stones bounced right off.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST
NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT?
Tracks & Escandalo. Tracks was that
club that everyone went to, gay or
straight. Escandalo was one of the
best gay Latin clubs. It had a family
atmosphere and people were so real. It
was small but would pack in the crowd
and play that great music.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
To get married on the beach of Manat
on the island of Puerto Rico surrounded
by family and friends. Once the wedding
after party is done, would love to be
carried away in a hot air balloon as my
partner and I wave farewell.
WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU
MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Besides having affordable health care
for all, we need to remember to respect
others. Everyone is so pre-occupied
with who is getting a divorce, having
a baby, gaining or losing weight and
blasting out other peoples business
on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Remember
all people have the right to privacy.
Instead of trying to be in the mix, take a
few steps back and take a good look in
the mirror. The reection you get back
may surprise you.
WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME
WOULD YOU CHANGE?
The assassinations of Martin
Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy.
Their contributions to our countrys
equal rights campaign were just the
beginning. They both died too soon.
WHATS BEEN THE MOST
MEMORABLE POP CULTURE
MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
OMG who did not like the 80s:
balloon pants, big hair (male and
female), crazy colors. Who would have
thought Madonna would become such
an icon? And I will never forget watching
the Motown anniversary special when
Michael Jackson did the moonwalk
across stage and the crowd went crazy.
ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
I insist on staying true to yourself and
always doing your best. Life is not a DVR
there are no replays.
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK
POST OR TWEET?
Giving thanks to all who posted happy
birthday messages to me.
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT
WOULD THE TITLE BE?
My name is S K I Like going down
or up a hill
IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO
CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION,
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Nothing I feel that being gay is
what helps me stay special. It is the
cherry on top of this ice cream sundae of
life. Being gay is part of me but does not
make me who I am as a man.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND
THE PHYSICAL WORLD?
I believe when your time here is done
there is another place beyond where
you will be with the ones you love.
WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT
MOVEMENT LEADERS?
Dont let your position allow you to
lose focus on the prize: Equality for all.
WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS
HOT COALS FOR?
To dance side by side or face to face
with Janet Jackson.
WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS
YOU MOST?
I hate them all. The fact that we have
stereotypes does not help us gain
overall equality.
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT
MOVIE?
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything
Julie Newmar
WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED
SOCIAL CUSTOM?
Holding the door for a lady. I think we
should hold the door for the next person
behind you, whether male or female. It
does annoy me that when you do hold
it for someone you cannot even get a
thank you.
WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU
MOST COVET?
My outstanding graduate student
award from Strayer University. I was
recognized in front of all my family and
friends, and thousands of others, a few
weeks ago at commencement ceremony
at the Verizon Center here in D.C.
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN
AT 18?
Life is what you make it and not what
you have.
WHY WASHINGTON?
I moved to D.C. after a short time in
North Carolina pursuing my post-military
telecommunication career.

Several LGBT themes
among summer festival
offerings
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
The Capital Fringe Festival opens this week
(thru July 29) with about 130 shows in 15 venues.
Among the eclectic mix of independent
companies and performers, many are of special
interest to LGBT audiences. Here are a few.
A Fringe productions success is greatly
determined by its title, says playwright Bob
Bartlett. In past Fringe festivals, he says, his
work has definitely been upstaged by more
provocatively named pieces. So this year the gay
playwright and director isnt taking any chances:
Bartlett has titled his entry Bareback Ink.
A lean two-hander especially tailored for
Fringe, Bartletts darkly erotic play explores the
unlikely relationship between a hypersexual
young man called Canvas (Grant Cloyd) and
a 40-something, asexual tattoo artist (DC
Cathro). Bartlett describes it as a contemporary
reimagining of the Ganymede myth in which
Zeus violently snatches a beautiful young
shepherd to join him on Mount Olympus as
his lover. In Bartletts version, the unseen Zeus
character has ordered Canvas to have an
image of the rape of Ganymede tattooed on
his back against his will. While most of Bartletts
past plays have been about healing, he says,
this one isnt going in that direction.
Bartlett, who teaches theater at Bowie State
University, has three tattoos of his own, two of
which commemorate the death of his brother
in 1991. Hes intrigued by the experience of
marking ones skin with art that cant easily
be removed, as well as the relationship that
develops between the artist and customer,
particularly during the arduous and week-long
task of creating a full back tattoo.
The development process surrounding
Bareback Ink (which runs at Gear Box, an
intimate and appropriately grungy space
above the Passenger Bar and Restaurant
at 1021 7th Street, NW.), has been a little
nerve wracking, Bartlett says. Do-it-yourself
theater comes quickly and theres inherent
risk in that. But thats part of Fringes charm.
In mid-August, Bartlett and the actors are
taking Bareback Ink to the world-famous
Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
Advance buzz says Chelsea Norment is
hilarious as Graglore the troll in Red Knight
Productions comedy play Medieval Story
Land (Studio Theatre, 1501 14th Street,
NW). A familiar face at open mic nights
around town, Norment (whos gay) is also
experienced in improvisation and sketch
comedy, but Fringe will be her rst try at a fully
realized, non-sketch theatrical production.
I thought it was time to challenge myself by
learning a script and putting meaning into my
characters dialogue, she says. My character is
a troll, so its surprisingly that hes a bit of a loner.
But as the action unfolds, he ends up being the
glue that holds the other characters together.
Its a great part. Im having a lot fun with it.
Red Knights website describes the show
as Lord of the Rings meets Forrest Gump
meets Monty Python in this fast paced
parody of the medieval fantasy genre
featuring furious swordplay and a gripping
plot, the show appeals not only to hobbit-
loving fantasy appreciators but to anyone
who likes a good story or likes to laugh.
Its 12-person cast plays more than 40 parts.
Norment, who lives in D.C. and walks dogs
by day, says her stand-up act takes on her
childhood and skewed vision of the world.
She riffs on the differences between gender
roles, specically how growing up she never
really dened her own gender. Related horror
stories include tales of the gender non-specic
bowl haircut she sported throughout puberty.
The newly formed Field Trip Theatre presents
Stopgap at Mount Vernon United Methodist
Church (800 Mass Ave., NW). Written by
Danielle Mohlman and staged by Jamila Reddy
(both straight and both recent graduates of
Studio Theatres prestigious apprenticeship
program), the two-hour comedy drama follows
the growth of a prospective single mother and
her best friend and his husband who strive to
create family in the heteronormative clime of
Chino Hills, Calif. The six-person cast includes
gay actor Michael Litcheld.
Stopgap is about young adults coming
of age, Reddy says. Theyre learning a lot
about who they are and the lives they want.
Similarly, Fringe has been an incredible learning
experience for Reddy. Its been an exercise in
self-producing. For the rst time Ive assembled
a design team from all over the city.
Also, the plays subject matter was new
for Reddy too: I learned a lot about same-
sex unions and the privilege that straight
people enjoy, and take for granted.

Top Chef nalist brings
bold air to Bandolero
By JONATHAN HOWARD
Mike Isabellas idea of a perfect dinner out has
three essential components a welcome feel,
cocktail in hand and delicious food at the ready.
Those are the elements the Top Chef All
Stars runner-up is incorporating at his new
restaurant Bandolero (3241 M Street, N.W.)
where he likes to have fun with his food by
changing avors and textures in the traditional
Mexican dishes he offers up with new twists.
A reservation for eight is difcult to
get at Bandolero, but in my opinion its
the perfect number to experience all
Bandolero has to offer. We walked in,
the hostess greeted us warmly, brought
us to the remainder of our party, and we
were seated. Our waiter approached,
explained the small plates concept, and
took our drink orders. In moments drinks
were being passed around the table.
Throughout the evening the exceptional
staff including general manager, James
Horn, served us and others attentively but
not intrusively. Our glasses were always
full, we never searched for a plate and
there was always food on the table.
When opening Bandolero, Isabella
wanted two things: lots of tacos and strong
margaritas. Drinks by head mixologist, Sam
Babcock, are not only strong but delicious
renditions of classics. Each drink is perfectly
balanced. The basic margarita falls short on
avor, but dont waste time on the basic when
standouts like the frozen prickly pear margarita
exist; its Isabellas favorite. Other well-crafted
drinks include the El Dorado with a ve-spice
syrup that adds a deep warmth to the cocktail,
the fresh Jesus Malverde has cucumber, lime,
agave and pork barrel hellre bitters, and the
Casa En Fuego was a mouth full of rich re
from a habanero-infused tequila.
The moment the rst dish arrived,
avors began exploding in our mouths.
The guacamole is tangy and fresh, and
not only does Bandolero succeed with
its guacamole but it also serves up an
exquisite dip called sikil pak composed
of pumpkin seeds, jalapenos and orange.
After the dips, we moved on to taquitos
and tostadas, a course we quickly dubbed
Mexican sushi. These fresh raw bites
were perfect combinations of unexpected
avors. The blue crab with coconut and
red chili was too good to pass up, even
though Im sensitive to shellsh. The tuna
with ginger and sweet potato as well as the
snapper with charred mango and jicama
were the two overall favorites at the table.
Then it was time for tacos. We couldnt
wait to try the crispy mahi mahi with chipotle,
avocado and lime but we ended up being
blown away by the complexity of avors in the
suckling pig tacos with apple and habanero
mustard. Each bite of this taco with its fresh
ingredients was absolute perfection. The BBQ
chicken taco however, was dry and bland.
We started getting full, but couldnt resist
ordering a few more items. I had been eying
the nachos with crispy goat and goat cheese
and they turned out to be amazing. Also, the
queso fundido with duck cont, manchego
and egg was delectable. The sweet
plantains were almost as good as my Cuban
grandmothers. After such fantastic courses,
we couldnt possibly eat anything else, at
least until dessert. We ordered the sopapillas
fried donuts with dulce de leche, the
besitos de coco (little coconut cookies) and
the spicy chocolate ice cream. Before we
knew it the plates were scraped clean.
As I look back at the meal I realize that
Bandolero gets high marks with almost
every drink and dish. Isabellas menu is
creative, playful and full of unexpected
combinations. The Day of the Dead theme
of the restaurant feels authentic, but it
also creates a very dark and loud dining
room. We found ourselves yelling across
the table when conversing. However,
the bar at the front of the restaurant is a
bright warm spot with reclaimed materials
where the playfulness of the theme shines
through. Bandolero is an absolute must
try, and without a doubt serves up some
of the best Mexican cuisine I have tasted
in the city.

A well-rounded tness
routine will yield health
benets at any life stage
By KEVIN NORRIS
Samuel Jennings came to me three
months ago at age 68 and already in very
good shape. He wanted to perpetuate his
longevity and had some additional goals.
Among them, Sam wants to age gracefully
and maintain a decent quality of life and he
knows that in order to do this exercise must
be part of the prescription. Sam is one of the
several older adults whom I work with and he
is very much a part of a growing population
that needs and deserves attention.
I just came to the realization the other day
that in less than three years, I will be turning
50, getting my AARP card and becoming
part of the majority exercise population. The
50-plus population is becoming the fastest
growing tness and exercise population.
And while just missing the Baby Boomer
status myself by a year, which technically and
arguably ended in 1964, I am condent I will
be entering some of the best years of my life
as long as I stay t and exercise regularly, eat
well, get regular doctors check-ups, etc. You
can too and at any age.
For about 15 years, the Baby Boom
tness market has been slowly growing,
says Colin Milner, CEO of the International
Council on Active Aging. But, in the last
several years it has really exploded and
its exploded in many segments including
health club memberships. According
to the International Health, Racquet and
Sportsclub Association, older adults are
hitting gyms and health clubs at a record
rate and from 1987-2003, the number of
health club members aged 55 and older
grew by 343 percent. These gures will
only continue to grow more and more.
The American College of Sports Medicine
predicts that by 2030 the number of individuals
65 years and older will reach 70 million in the
United States. Those 85 and older will then be
the fastest-growing segment of our population.
I have been very fortunate in my
personal training career to have embraced
this population many years ago when I was
at Sports Club/LA and we were beginning
to experience the shift in the personal
training industry with more and more
senior adults hiring personal trainers to
maintain their quality of life and longevity.
While I have no idea how old the oldest
living gym goer is or has been, I had the
absolute joy of working with Ms. Agnes
Jackson, who was 105 when she began
exercising in a group class at the Lisner-
Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home in Friendship
Heights. Prior to Ms. Jackson there was
Granny Evelyn Wimmer (whom I wrote
about last year) who came to me at 92 and
worked with me three times a week until
she died at 98. I am condent that I will be
working with more and more older adults.
Currently, I have clients well into their
60s and 70s and I marvel at the increase in
the average lifespan and how seriously this
population, often dismissed, take exercise.
Loss of independence is of particular
concern and enough to scare anyone. No
one wants to live in any sort of diminished
capacity and being proactive so that does
not happen is key. This applies to everyone.
But, just what do we do with seniors and
what exercises can be done? First dont
call them old and second dont discount
them or their ability. Seniors can engage
in just about any form of exercise as those
younger, but with additional caveats, such
as a full health screening, full physical
assessment of strengths and weaknesses
and potential need for medical clearance.
We also need to dispel and educate
those who are timid to exercise because of
the many myths associated with exercise for
older adults. Many are resistant to beginning
an exercise program because they are fearful
that they will injure themselves. But its crucial
to your health to work through your fears
and establish a routine exercise program.
We are discovering that aging itself is not
the problem. Here Milner points out that, a
lot of problems we used to think of as being
related to aging we now know arent related
to aging at all. They are related to disuse
of the body. And just about every area of
health can be maintained or increased with
physical activity. Diabetes, heart disease,
arthritis, high blood pressure and more are
no longer the impediments to exercise they
were once thought to be.
Be sure to follow all the standard
guidelines if you are new to a tness
regimen, but also remember to always
listen to your body. No one knows it better
than you, not even your personal trainer.
The age old question
An exercise program can be started at any age and will invariably bring positive health results if
done correctly.

Love is a

THE ABSOLUTIST
By John Boyne

320 pages
World War I-set story tells
gay love tragedy
By TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
For some reason, you just cant seem to
let it go.
It happened so many years before.
You were a child then, really: old
enough to know better, but not old
enough to resist your impulses. Old
enough to act, but not old enough to
understand that youd carry your pain
for decades.
Everyone says to forgive yourself. Move
on. Let it go.
What they dont know is that, though
the years pass, the regret you feel never
does/
Tristan Sadler hoped his memories of
battle would eventually fade. He hoped
that nobody would ever know what hed
seen. And in the book The Absolutist by
John Boyne, he hoped theyd never know
what he did.
Marian Bancroft lived quite far away
from London. It wouldnt be easy to
get there; nonetheless, Tristan Sadler
made the journey. He wasnt sure why
he needed to give her the letters but
somehow, it seemed important.
Not long before, hed written to
Marian, telling her about the letters,
knowing shed want them. Though
shed answered back that, yes, it would
be nice to have some of her brother
Wills last possessions, Tristan wasnt
sure of the reception hed get from her.
After all, he had survived World War I,
and Will had not.
Upon meeting, he thought that
Marian was a little addled but, no,
she was nervous and after a cup of
tea, Tristan believed they might be
friends someday. Sometimes, when
she scrunched her nose just so, he
could see Will in her they were
siblings and a jolt went through
his heart.
Tristan and Will had been through
military training together. Just 17 then,
Tristan had lied about his age so that he
might join the army. He supposed it was
what he needed to do, especially since
he had nowhere else to go. Especially
since his father sent him away for
kissing another boy.
And Will, he was handsome. He
had a great sense of humor and a
deep sense of honor. Throughout
their training, Tristan and he became
friends.
They became more than friends.
Now, there was Tristan, three years
after wars end, holding a bundle of
Wills letters. And when Marion asked
what happened on the day that Will
died, Tristan knew suddenly why hed
brought the letters all the way from
London.
So he told her
Let me try to explain how much I loved
The Absolutist.
I loved it for its grainy black-and-
white-movie feel, like an old British
film from the 40s. I loved that author
John Boyle teased out just enough
information throughout this book to
make me think Id figured out what
had happened to Tristan and Will (I
didnt!). I loved the mixture of horrific
brutality and insanely beautiful prose.
And I loved the ending, which made me
gasp, gasp, and gasp again.
The Absolutist starts out a tad slow,
but dont let that deter you from reading
this absolutely stellar book. Start it, stick
around, and you soon wont be able to let
it go.

THE Roofing SpEcialiSTS
From plantation shudders
to walking closets,
the perils of real estate
copywriting
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
Since its been too hot to do much of
anything lately, Ive recently been reliving
my childhood in my off hours by hungrily
watching every episode of AMCs Mad
Men I can nd on TV.
I adore watching Sterling Coopers
creative division come up with catch
phrases and ad copy for the products of
the rms they represent. And consider-
ing that the world of advertising is one I
reenter each time I list someones home,
I like to think of myself as part Don and
part Peggy, with a wistful nod to Joan
from my younger days.
I remember my mothers outrage when
the William Esty Ad Agency declared that
Winston tastes good like a cigarette
should. As one who had drummed good
grammar into me from the day I began
speaking, she would holler at the radio,
as a cigarette should, you numbskulls!
while pufng on a Kent and sipping her
martini.
Growing up, I watched Joe Willie don
panty hose in the 60s, taught the world
to sing while drinking Tab in the 70s and
watched O. J. Simpson dash through air-
ports in the 80s. Running to catch a ight
while late became known as doing the
OJ sprint.
Real estate advertising tends to
be a bit more conservative on the na-
tional level, focusing on home owner-
ship, happy families and brand identity.
When it gets to the local level, however,
it can sometimes be confusing or mis-
leading, but often downright funny. I
strive for funny.
Anyone who has ever read real estate
descriptions designed to entice buyers to
a property has probably been frustrated
by jargon and puffery (praising a product
without mentioning its shortcomings).
Like texting, we have industry shorthand,
acronyms and what I call Realtor speak
words and phrases like cozy (small), vin-
tage (outdated) and needs TLC (possible
money pit).
Learning the lingo is akin to study-
ing a foreign language. Most people
can figure out the basics: a BR is a
bedroom, a BA is a bath and a FP is a
fireplace. In the intermediate course,
you learn HWF (hardwood floors),
OSP (off-street parking) and EIK (eat-
in kitchen).
The advanced class covers C/C Fee
(condo or coop fee), CAM (common
area maintenance) and Bsmt RR w/FB
(basement recreation room with full
bath), but only in post-graduate stud-
ies do you learn ORTRTAORAO (Own-
er reserves the right to accept or reject
any offer).
Im sure you have seen peacock
words (an absolutely amazing kitch-
en), weasel words (probably one
of the most impressive homes on the
block) and llers (youll love living
here). I wont pretend that Ive not
been guilty of all the above from time
to time, but I especially love reading
other peoples descriptive information
about homes and happening upon a
phrase that didnt quite convey the
meaning the writer intended.
Here are some of the funniest, as seen
in the Metropolitan Regional Information
System (MRIS), our local multiple listing
database:
Sort-after area. So who was doing
the sorting and why didnt they sort areas
before going to see the property?
One-car attacked garage. I think I
saw that house on a State Farm commer-
cial. Are you out there Jessica?
Walking closet. Better look quickly
before it walks away entirely.
Recently remolded. I guess the
scorching heat and thunderstorms these
past two weeks could have been involved
here.
Sinking living room. Now what is
making it do that? Quicksand?
Bring your fuzziest buyer. Hmmm.
Not sure if I should bring Joe or Stella.
Big panty in the kitchen. I can only
imagine whats in the laundry.
Formal dinning room. Its the loud-
est room in the house, of course.
Rot iron railings. Ive seen these rust,
but never rot.
Plantation shudders. Are they shud-
dering at the rot on the iron railings, per-
haps?
And my personal favorite: Large dick
in rear.
So, the next time you see me, Ill be
proofreading my ad copy. In the mean-
time, my fuzzy buyer is checking out the
big panty in the kitchen while waiting for
the walking closet to saunter into the
sinking living room. Its enough to make
a plantation shudder.
