Kaushalya, a new rice variety derived from the cross between Pankaj and
IET4786, has been released for irrigated areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,
Gujarat, Orissa, and West Bengal.
The variety had higher yield than check varieties Jaya and NDR359 and newly
released hybrid rice variety KRH2 across all years and locations (Table 1). A long
slender-grained variety, Kaushalya became popular among farmers as it fetches
a higher price than do current varieties. It is moderately resistant to different
pests and diseases (Tables 3 and 4).
Kaushalya can withstand submergence for 57 days (Table 2). In an experiment,
45-d-old seedlings of six rice varieties were subjected to a submergence test: the
plants were under 30 cm of water for 7 d. The results showed that IR42, a
submergence-susceptible rice variety, had higher mortality (70%), whereas
FR13A and Swarna-Sub1 (a submergence-tolerant variety released from IRRI)
exhibited lower and the same degree of tolerance, respectively. Popular variety
Swarna experienced moderately higher mortality, while Kaushalya showed
relative tolerance for submergence.
