Lotion

Do It Yourself Lotion A lotion is an emulsion of oil and water. An emulsifier is needed to cause the two to mix. There are several things that can be used as emulsifiers.

Beeswax Lecithin Corn Starch (Corn Flour) Borax Egg yolk

To make the lotion, combine the emulsifier with the oils. (Warm if necessary). Then very slowly add the water stirring vigerously constantly. Add any essential oils or fragrance oils that you desire. Things that may be used in Lotions are:

Essential Oils Fragrance Oils Flower Waters Infused Oils Glycerin Cocoa Butter or Shea Butter Aloe Vera Gel Honey Lanolin Herbs Vitamins Alcohol

Lotion Recipes

Connie's Lotion
2oz. Cocoa butter for the solid fat 5oz. Olive Oil(Cold Pressed Extra Virgin) that I had infused the herbs Comfrey, Calendula, and Camomile. (If I had a problem with itchiness, rashes, exema etc. I would have added chickweed, plantain, cranesbill.) 2 oz Peppermint Tea (because I wanted the finished cream to smell like a peppermint patty) 1 tsp. beeswax 3-5 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil 1 oz. shea butter 1 oz. aloe vera gel 1 TBSP. liquid lecithin This recipe will get moldy if not kept in the fridge. You might try making it with distilled water, or note to keep it in the fridge and use quickly. I'm sure that it is the peppermint tea that caused the problem. Connie Henrie henrie@telusplanet.net >

Cleanser/Facial Wash Lotion

Half a cup emulsifying wax (125ml) 3 tablespons beeswax (45 ml) melt waxes over boiling water 1.5 litres decoction: steep in boiling water for about half an hour: 4 tablespoons dried rosemary 2 tablespoon dried lavender flowers 2 tablespoons dried mallow stems You could omit the lavender and mallow and step up the rosemary a little if you wanted to, but they all have their special properties. Add to decoction and stir: 100 ml glycerin(e) 2 teaspoons fruit acids (this can be citric acid, tartaric acid, lactic acid if you can't get mixed fruit acids) some natural preservative (I now use dehydroacetic acid, but have used benzoin tincture, about 1 teaspoon and half a teaspoon of myrrh) strain (better yet, filter, this decoction) before adding the waxes. Add waxes with both the waxes and the aqueous mixture at about 70-80 deg. C stir vigourously till well emulsified. An electric hand-held food processor works well for this phase.

Continue stirring slowly till it reaches room temperature, to allow for full emulsification and to remove bubbles from electric agitation. When it has reached room temperature (not before), add 2025 drops Rosemary essential oil and 10 drops lavender essential oil. Continue stirring till completely cooled down. For fair hair you could substitute chamomile flowers for rosemary and chamomile essential oil for rosemary essential oil, although chamomile essential oil is more expensive. You could use half chamomile essential oil and half lavender essential oil. (Dr) Moyra Evansevans@dorea.co.za

Body Lotion
Found a great body lotion recipe in Winter 97 issue of Handcraft Illustrated magazine. Article is by Amy Jenner. Absorbs well and leaves no residure on skin. yield: 2 cups 1 cup aloe vera gel 1 teaspoon lanolin 1 teaspoon pure Vit E oil 1/3 cup coconut oil 1/2 to 3/4 ounce beeswax 3/4 cup almond oil up to 1and 1/2 teaspoons essential oil or more to prolong scent ( I used a combination of lavender EO and rose geranium EO - scent is lovely and is great for skin) Place aloe vera gel, lanolin, & vit E oil in blender or food processor. Place coconut oil & beeswax in 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup, microwave on high 30 seconds, and stir with chopstick. Repeat heating in 10-second blocks until fully melted. Stir in almond oil, reheating if necessary. Run blender or processor at low to medium speed, then pour in melted oils in thin stream as if making mayonnaise. As oil is blended in, cream will turn white and blender's motor will start to grind. As soon as melted oils are added and you've achieved mayonnaise-like consistency, stop motor, add essential oil(s) and pulse-blend. Do not overblend. Transfer cream to glass jars while still warm, as it thickens quickly. Iris Emily PUREEM@aol.com

Cucumber Lotion
Peel 1 or 2 large Cucumbers, cut them into slices, and place them in a double boiler, which should be closely covered. Cook them slowly until they are soft. Then put the pieces into

a fine linen bag and squeeze them until all the juice has been extracted. Add to the extracted juice one-fourth of rectified spirits of wine (or whisky) and one-third of Elder-flower water. Shake the mixture well and pour into small bottles ready for use. Billie BMosiman@aol.com

Re-formulated original recipe by Melody Upham with changes made by Betty Depuydt 1/8 tsp Borax 1/4 c. Distilled water 1/2 c. Fractionated Coconut Oil 1 Tbs grated beeswax 1 tsp scent (You may want to add this slowly and adjust to suit you) 1/8 tsp lecithin 1/2 c. Aloe Vera Gel Combine water and borax. Bring borax and water almost to boiling. In a seperate pan mix oil and beeswax and heat until wax is melted. Slowly add borax/water to oil/beeswax, stirring briskly, a small wire whisk works perfectly or you can use a handblender. Add essential oils during the whisking process. Let cool to room temp. Once lotion is at room temp add the 1/2 cup Aloe Vera gel and whisk to incorporate fully into the lotion. Bottle. Therese lott@nfx.net

Magic Lotion
In small pan over water melt 3 tabs. safflower oil 1 tabs. lanolin 1 tabs cocoa butter 1/3 cup light mineral oil 1tsp. almond extract or add eos of you like

Let cool In a pint jar place 2 tabs. water 1 tabs glycerine 1/4 cup plus 2 tabs. 70% ethanol alcohol 1 drop food or other color When the oils are cool add to the pint jar and shake. Divide into (2) 6 oz jars. In about half an hour the lotion will separate into 3 different layers. Each one a different color. Shake and it becomes an emulsion, let stand and it separates again. This is really pretty and feels so good. Contributed by Sandra Good goodgal@voicenet.com

Mint Body Lotion

1/2 cup mint water (see note below) 1/8 tsp. borax powder 1/2 c. sunflower oil 1 tsp. coconut oil 1 tsp. grated beeswax 3-4 drops peppermint oil (optional) Mix together the mint water and the borax, stirring until well mixed. Set aside. Mix together the sunflower oil, coconut oil, and beeswax in a glass measuring cup. Place the cup with the oils--beeswax mixture in a pan of water (about 1 to 2 inches of water), making a water bath. Heat over medium heat until the beeswax is melted (8 to 10 minutes), stirring occasionally. When the wax is melted, bring the mint solution almost to boiling (put the glass cup with the mint water/borax in the microwave on High for 1 minute, or use a water bath on the stove top). Remove the oils-beeswax mixture from the water bath. Slowly add mint water/borax to the mixture in the blender and whip). Allow the lotion to cool completely. The consistentency may seem a bit thin, but it will thicken as it cools. The lotion will be pale green in color. You may add the peppermint oil now if

you wish. Pour the lotion into a clean container with a lid. To use, massage a small amount into your skin. Note: Mint water is made by boiling fresh or dried mint leaves in water and then letting the mixture cool. Strain off the mint leaves. I use 1 cup fresh mint (1/4 cup dried mint leaves) to 1 cup water. This lotion is very refreshing after a shower. (this recipe was taken out of "Natural Beauty at Home, by Janice Cox." Mint Body Lotion Variation

I made this lotion with 1/2 lavender water and 1/2 calendula water instead of the mint water, then used lavender eo and rose attar instead of the mint eo, substituted grapeseed oil for sunflower, almond oil for the coconut oil - it came out great! Not greasy at all. Jennifer Wilson JENNIFERW@clarityconnect.com

Protective Lotion

When melted, remove from heat. Whisk the Vit. E into the mixture. When cool add the EOs, mixing well. Store in a bottle or jar. Kelly winston@adams.net

Melody's Light Moisturizer Lotion

1/4 c. Safflower oil (Jojoba, almond, etc. can be substituted) 1/4 c. Stearic Acid 1/2 tsp Baking Soda 1/4 c.. Glycerin 1 heaping tsp Lecithin 1/2 c. Distilled Water 1 Tbs. scent 1. Combine oil and stearic acid and heat just until stearic is melted. Do not overheat or the lotion will curdle. 2. Combine baking soda, glycerin, lecithin and water and heat but do not boil. 3. Slowly add water solution to the oil solution while stirring with a small wire whisk. This will foam up so make sure your container is large enough. 4. Use a handblender (or blender) and blend for several minutes. If the lotion separates and curdles, it is too hot. Stick the container in another container full of ice water and let it cool down. Beat again. 5. Add scent and bottle. Note: Oils and water solution should be hot, but you should still be able to stick your finger in it without getting burned. copyright 1997 Rainbow Meadow Soap

Skin Healer Moisturizer Lotion

1 tsp. sodium alginate 1 cup water Make the base first by heating these together in a covered, non-metal pan until completely dissolved. Use low heat-it will take over an hour. Creamy Sun-Tan Lotion

3/4 cup (180 ml.) water 3 tea bags (do not use instant tea) 1/4 cup (60 ml.) lanolin 1/4 cup (60 ml.) sesame oil 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml.) perfume (optional)

Heat the water to boiling, add tea bags. Leave them to brew for 20 minutes and squeeze them occasionally before removing. Put lanolin, sesame oil and 1/4 cup strong tea into blender. Cover and process at low speed. Remove cap immediately and pour in the remaining tea in a steady stream. Use a rubber spatula to keep ingredients arend the processing blades. Add perfume and give fragrance to the sun-tan lotion. This recipe makes about 1 cup of a soft, tan-colored cream which spreads smoothly on the skin, and gives a sensation of moistness. It dries without feeling sticky. This cream actually repels water and will stay on though swimming. Creamy SunTan Lotion will screen out about half of the burning sun rays while allowing a large percentage of the tanning rays to get through. However, if you burn after 5 minutes of exposure, do not rely on this cream to protect you. This recipe from "Beauty Recipes from Natural Foods" by Anne Marsh. ISBN 0-8069-5278-4, copyright 1974. Rosewater & Glycerin Lotion

2 tablespoons glycerine 2 tablespoons corn flower (cornstarch) 1/2 cup distilled water 2 tablespoons rosewater Mix together all ingredients in an ovenproof glass bowl or pitcher. Heat until just boiling and thick, 1 to 2 minutes in the microwave on High (stirring every 30 seconds), or on the stove top in a water bath. The lotion will be clear and jellylike; stir thoroughly and cool completely. When the lotion is cool, pour into a clean, airtight container. Note: If your lotion becomes too thick, you can thin it by adding water, one tablespoon at a time and stirring thoroughly. from Natural Beauty at Home by Janice Cox.

Edible Lotions
Use your standard lotion recipe, only make sure everything that goes into it can be consumed, like, peppermint EO instead of the highly toxic, but wonderfully relaxing wintergreen EO. I particularly like a simple blend of sweet almond, beeswax and cocoa butter. Use a couple capsules of

lecithin to emulcify and have fun!! Bea Hall bhall@sarnoff.com
