Sonia Was 'Constitutionally' Eligible to be PM: Kalam

Rejecting controversy over his
book, former President A P J Abdul

Kalam today asserted that Sonia

Gandhi was "Constitutionally" eligible
to be appointed as the Prime Minister

when Congress emerged as the largest party in 2004 elections.

"I have said already in the book
because Constitutionally Supreme
Court says that she (Gandhi) is a citizen. So, Constitutionally if the majority
party says she should be appointed.
But she did not... She put Manmohan
Singhji. There is no controversy in my
mind," he told PTI here.
Kalam was reacting on the sidelines of a function when asked about
the controversy generated by his
book 'Turning Points' because of the
mention that he was ready to swear
in Gandhi as the Prime Minister despite pressure from various political
leaders before she nominated Singh.
NDA Convenor and JD(U) President Sharad Yadav yesterday hit out
at Kalam, saying "his conscience has
woken up late. It is for self-aggrandisement. We used to respect him a
lot but now are very saddened after
such comments."

Earlier, BJP had also criticised for

the comments.
Kalams stand on the political
situation after the Lok Sabha elections lifted the veil on an episode that
has been intensely speculated upon
that he was reluctant to appoint the
Italian-born Gandhi as the countrys
Prime Minister.
The former President says in the
book that he was almost certain that
Gandhi would head the UPA government but Rashtrapati Bhavan had to
rework the appointment letter after
the Congress chief nominated Singh
as the Prime Minister.
Addressing a conference, Kalam
said, "Hospitals today are a very
complex facility and nurses as well
as paramedics staff should be trained
for dealing with all forms of complex
health-care procedures."
The former President was addressing a nursing conference here.
Sharing his vision for strengthen-

ing the primary health centres in the

country, Kalam said trained nurses

with advanced qualification should

be appointed to fill the shortage of
doctors

Pondy budget on July 16

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday offered worship at the famous Sri Manakula Vinayakar Temple on the second day of his visit to Puducherry. He was offered the
traditional Poorna Kumba Mariyadhai. The temple priest, Kumar, performed the pujas
and presented the prasadam to the Prime Minister at the shrine of the presiding deity. The
Prime Minister was accompanied by Union minister of State for PMO V. Narayanasamy,
Lt Governor Iqbal Singh and chief Minister N. Rangasamy.

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, holding finance portfolio, will

present the annual budget
2012-13 on July 16 at 1215
hrs, when the Assembly
reassembles on that day.
Meanwhile, the Business Advisory Committee
today met in the committee room of the Assembly
and decided to conduct the
House both in the morning
and the evening.
The decision was
taken after the Opposition
representatives putforth
a demand to conduct the
House for a longer period
than the proposed ten-day
as several issues pertaining to people were to be
discussed.
Presided by Speaker V
Sabapathy, Chief Minister

N Rangasamy, Congress
Legislator K Lakshminarayanan (on behalf
of Opposition Leader V
Vaithilingam),AIADMK
Legislature Party Leader A
Anbazhagan, DMK Legislature Party Leader A M
H Nazeem and Deputy
Speaker Selvam attended
the meeting.
Opposition members,
including Mr Anbazhaghan
demanded the session
should be conducted for a
much longer period which
was rejected stating the
budget should be pased
before Juy 31.
When insisted by the
opposition, it was decided
to hold the session both in
the morning and the evening to ensure more time
for discussions.

Dont whip up Tamil sentiments:

Narayanasamy
MONDAY, 09 JULY 2012 Puducherry: Amid strident opposition
to training of Sri Lankan airmen by
India, Minister of State in PMO V
Narayanasamy on Sunday stressed
the need for cordial ties with the
neighbour in the larger interest of
Tamils in the island and asked political parties in Tamil Nadu to desist
from "whipping up" Tamil sentiments.
"Sri Lanka is our neighbouring
country. There should be cordial and
friendly relations with that nation in
the larger interest of the Sri Lankan
Tamils and also for the protection
of hundreds of industrialists, businessmen and traders from India and
more particularly from Tamil Nadu
doing their business there," he told
reporters here.
He said political parties in Tamil
Nadu "intending" to whip up Tamil
sentiments should, therefore, bear
in mind implications of their activities
and ensure that the Tamils and the
business community from India in
Sri Lanka did not face any 'embarrassing or critical predicament'.
He said as soon as the issue of
training of Sri Lanka airmen in the
IAF station in Chennai cropped up,
he requested Defence Minister A K
Antony to discontinue it as the state
witnessed an 'uncommon environ'.
Antony yesterday spoke to him
over phone and informed him that
the training programme had been
discontinued, he said adding, it was
for the Defence Minister to decide
in which part would the training be
arranged.
Central Government shifted the
nine Sri Lankan airmen to Bangalore

amid protests by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and UPA ally DMK President M Karunanidhi among others.
Noting that various leaders in

Tamil Nadu had issued statements

protesting the training, Narayanasamy said this was a new issue that
has cropped up in the state where
an 'uncommon environ' was prevailing in view of alleged killing of innocent Sri Lankan Tamils during the
war against LTTE.
He hastened to add India was
part of SAARC and defence personnel of member nations could be
trained in any other member country.
The Centre had been taking care
of the rehabilitation of displaced
Tamils in Sri Lanka, he said adding
he would only urge political parties
in Tamil Nadu "inclined to do politics
by whipping up Tamil sentiments in
their pretence to help the Sri Lankan
Tamils to desist from their activities."
On the Presidential election, he
said UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee was receiving 'enthusiastic and
rousing reception' in the states he
had visited so far and asserted he
would bag more than seven lakh
votes in the July 19 polls.

Pondicherry Bank Adopts IBM SmartCloud

IBM announced that Pondicherry Co-operative
Urban Bank in Puducherry, has selected IBM SmartCloud for its core banking solution. The solution will
help the bank offer more customer-centric services
and establish a robust banking operation.
Prior to this IBM implemented a SmartCloud solution for Nawanagar Co-operative Bank in Gujarat
and Sree Charan Souharda Co-operative Bank in
Bengaluru. With new regulations shaping customer
expectations from cooperative banks in India, these
banks have an increased focus on IT-related compliance in order to effectively compete against other

private banks.
As part of the agreement with Pondicherry Bank,
IBM will provide shared private cloud infrastructure
services to host and manage the core banking application from IBM Business Partner Infrasoft Technologies. By implementing this multi-tenant Infrastructure
as a Service (IaaS) on the cloud, the bank will be
able to offer state-of-the art financial solutions to their
customers including Internet banking, online money
transfer, ATM, and mobile banking. The IBM SmartCloud will also help the bank centralize its missioncritical operations such as real-time transaction pro-

cessing across its six branches in Pondicherry.

This shared private cloud for compute and storage is implemented from an IBM data center in Bengaluru and has the ability to provision capacity for additional branches.
Today we live in a global village where almost
everything is available at our doorstep. Keeping this
in mind we wanted our customers to have the same
ease when they bank with us. We also felt the need to
be on par with the services that private or nationalized
banks usually offer, said R Muralidharan, Administrator, The Pondicherry Co-operative Urban Bank
