Short term training programme on Techniques in Molecular Biology Nov 17-25, 2011

The Omics revolution focusing on researches in the field of genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics & metabolomics, has come to occupy the center stage of biological research. The increase in genomics and bioinformatic methods have revolutionized research in basic and applied biological fields. Whilst molecular techniques have evolved at a speedy rate over the last few decades, the underlying biochemical principles behind the vast majority of them has actually changed little. In this context a 9 day training programme on Techniques in Molecular Biology is being organized from Nov. 17-25, 2011 under the DBT State level Biotech Hub project, Department of Botany, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. This workshop combines opportunities to perform the latest, as well as commonly used older techniques, with particular attention to the principles underlying each technique. The programme shall comprise of invited talks from eminent scientists in the area of Molecular Biology as well as practical classes on various techniques in Molecular Biology The techniques/topics to be covered during the training shall include: Introduction to recombinant DNA tools and genetic engineering techniques Isolation of DNA and Southern blotting DNA melting and melt curve analysis Restriction Digestion and mapping Cloning stratagies and vector manipulation Transformation of bacterial cells and screening of recombinants Promoter driven reporter gene expression Polymerase Chain Reaction and its applications PCR based molecular markers for assessment of genetic diversity RAPDs, ISSR, SCARS as DNA fingerprinting tools Scoring DNA fingerprints for generation of binary matrix Protein analysis using SDS and 2D PAGE Subunit profiling Western blotting

The training programme is free of charge and is open to Research scholars and M.Sc students of the Departments in the School of Life Sciences, NEHU.
