ACCIDENTAL RELEASE
For bulk spillages wear PVC gloves, coveralls and full face Class P3 particulate respirator. At high dust levels (in excess of 10mg of fly ash per cubic metre of air based on a time weighted average of 8 hours continuous exposure) wear an air line respirator. Spray with water to prevent dust generation and place in sealed containers for disposal. Bulk spillages will normally only result from silo or tanker rupture. High dust levels will not normally occur with manual handling of bagged product and a class P1 or P2 Respirator (AN/NZS 1715 and 1716) is adequate for personal protection. Do not attempt to handle broken or ruptured bags.

7.

STORAGE AND HANDLING

Store in cool, dry, well ventilated area removed from acids (particularly hydrofluoric acid), foodstuffs, chemicals and hydrocarbons. Read the product label before use. Utilise safe work practices, avoid eye or skin contact and inhalation. Observe good personal hygiene. Prohibit food preparation and eating, drinking or smoking in areas where the product is produced, packaged or stored.

EXPOSURE CONTROL/PERSONAL PROTECTION

Do not inhale dust. Use in well ventilated areas. In poorly ventilated areas mechanical extraction ventilation is necessary. Maintain dust levels below the recommended exposure standard.

Exposure

Silica, crystalline Quartz (14808-60-7) ES-TWA 0.1mg/m3 (Silica Quartz, respirable NOHSC) ES-TWA# 0.1mg/m3 (Qld), 0.15 mg/m3 (NSW), WES-TWA 0.2 mg/m3. Wear safety glasses or dust proof goggles and PVC or rubber gloves. At high dust levels described previously wear a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) with Class P3 (Particulate) filter or a Class P3 (Particulate) respirator. Where an inhalation risk exists, wear a class P1 or P2 (Particulate) Respirator. When exposed to large quantities or where heavy contamination is likely, wear coveralls.

TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Health Hazards Summary Irritant slightly corrosive. Use safe work practices to avoid dust inhalation. Chronic over exposure to crystalline quartz may cause lung disease (silicosis). Crystalline quartz is classified as carcinogenic to humans (ARC Group 1). Adverse health effects are not anticipated where dust generation is minimised. Eyes Slightly corrosive irritant. Exposure may result in lacrimation, pain, redness and possible corneal burns with prolonged contact.

Inhalation

Irritant, slightly corrosive. Over exposure at high levels as described in Section 6 may result in irritation of the nose and throat with coughing. Prolonged and repeated inhalation of respirable silica may result in pulmonary fibrosis (silicosis). Crystalline quartz is classified as carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1). Irritant. Prolonged skin contact or direct contact with abraded skin may result in irritation and possible skin rash. Slightly corrosive, ingestion may result in burns to the mouth and throat with vomiting and abdominal pain. Due to the form of the product ingestion is not considered a likely exposure route. Silica, Crystalline Quartz (14808-60-7). Carcinogenicity, Classified as a human carcinogen IARC Group 1. Limited ecotoxicity data is available for this product. Ensure appropriate measures are taken to ensure that the material does not enter the environment, particularly waterways.

OTHER INFORMATION

Additional Information

Crystalline silica is present in fly ash as an impurity. The amount depends on the crystalline silica content of the source coal.

SILICA MEDICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Medical testing for those with frequent or potentially high exposure to crystalline silica (half the exposure standard or more) is recommended before beginning work and at regular intervals thereafter. This should include lung function tests and chest x rays every one to three years. If abnormal chest x ray develops, skin tests for tuberculosis should be done. Any evaluation should include a careful history of past and present symptoms with an exam. Medical tests that look for damage already done are not substitutes for controlling exposure.

EXPOSURE STANDARDS TIME WEIGHTED AVERAGES

Exposure standards are established on the premise of an 8 hour work period of normal intensity under normal climatic conditions and where a 16 hour break between shifts exists to enable the body to eliminate absorbed contaminants. In the following circumstances exposure standards must be reduced; strenuous work conditions, hot, humid climates, high altitude conditions and extended shifts (which increase the exposure period and shorten the period of recuperation).

ABBREVIATIONS
Mg/m3 ppm TWA/ES pH CAS# M IARC Milligrams per cubic metre Parts per million Time weighted Average or Exposure Standard Relates to hydrogen ion concentration this value will relate to a scale of 0-14 where 0 is highly acidic and 14 is highly alkaline Chemical Abstract Service Number used to identify chemical compounds Moles per litre, a unit of concentration International Agency for Research on Cancer

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES

The recommendation for protective equipment contained within this MSDS is provided as a guide only. Factors such as method of application working environment, quantity used, product concentration and the availability of engineering controls should be considered before final selection of personal protective equipment is made. Information in this regard in this document is summarised for ease of use.

HEALTH EFFECTS FROM EXPOSURE

It should be noted that the effects from exposure to this product will depend on several factors including frequency and duration of use, quantity used, and effectiveness of control measures, protective equipment used and method of

application. It is anticipated users will assess the risks and apply control methods where appropriate.
