PARISH PUMP:Reflecting the life and people of Debden

You know, being editor of the parish Magazine is not always as straightforward as it might seem. we sometimes have to deal with controversial issues and try to give all interested parties a fair hearing. Then again, we have to decipher all sorts of handwriting, making sure that the "transLation" is correct so as not to offend the writer by changing the sense or emphasis of his or her article. t{e al.so run the gauntlet of Debden folk who, "whilst not wishing to criticise" manage to correct us (we11' me anlrway) when they feel r have got it alr wrong again! ! ! However, this month has been extremeJ.y rewarding because of the bumper bundle of contributions received for inclusion. r staggered home from t.he shop under the sheer weight of it all lm not kidding. This is very encouraging. rt is good to have something to EDIT! !

something must have inspired you to write - surely not the Panto! sorry, this is not another panto issue although the subject does stilr keep coming up, doesn't it? r think it may well do so for some time to come - Deryck Johnson has produced an interesting piece on this very subject.

This positive and optimishic start. to the issue - who said, "what a change" - is ternpered by the need for a reminder about care of the village.
Environmental issues are always emotive (see Letters page) and our village and its surroundings should be treasured and not ignored, taken for granted or abused. I r.ronder if anyone is interested in starting an action group to keep the place tidy (at least), safe for children to play in and a 'pleasant valley' f,or the future generations to enjoy.
Give me a call if you are - 4072L. Stephanie Watson.

Mum,

Forgive me for banging on again about the verges. (You may ask what verges, since they have all disappeared for miles around. )

I have in the past complained about the needless damage to the triangle outside Redbrick House and have on a number of occasions tried my inadequate best to make good some of this damage. In addition, I have offered to supply and instal chain link fencing myself to try and safeguard it but I gather that The green Essex County Council. would not aPprove of this. continues to be violated, and I have rather given up trying to fill in the scars. May I make a renewed plea that it be fenced off? At my expense? Shall I do it anlrway and see what happens? Do we not wish to try and keep our village in
reasonable condition?

In this respect I note Lhat the area opposite the Shop sti1l Looks like marshes of the Camargue, and lorries cannot now even go down the motorway through the village without churning up the strip of grass outside my house (which is Council owned anl.way! ). r

After the formal business of the evening at our February neetinE members were taken on a holiday trip vtith music. A North American Adventure with slides and music, by our Guest Speaker Mr. Trevor Fry. He explained that this was the ultimate in holiday photography and an exce]lent way to make a special- trip more memorable. Audio visual photography is a lot of hard work but, as we sar{, the resul! }ras we}1 worth the effort. Our trip took us from the hustle and bustle of New York to the serenity of the Canadian Rockies to our destinat, ion, Maui, an island near Hawaii for sun, sea and sand. A rnarvellous way to brighten a dull February evening. Birthday posies were presented to several nembers and a buttonhole to the Speaker. The evening concluded with refreshments provided by Mrs. Viv Applin and Mrs. Pam Gilder. The next meeting will be held on April 25th at 8 P.rn. in the Village HaIl when the Speaker will be Mrs. Jean Gumbrel whose topic will be "Down Your StreeE".

what a good thing we decided not to do Babes in the wood. Had we continued with this which was our original pIan, the village would have been subjected to two consecutive Pantomimes of the same tiEle.
Babes in the wood was performed in the village halL under the direction of MargareL Young in 1947. When I first learned of this, it was a joint Debden-Wimbish production but as I researched furbher it became plain that wimbish had nade great

I am sure however that many Debdeu residents will Two performances were given at remember it nostalgically. Wimbish Village Hall and one at Debden. Their ability to move venue was due to the fact that they did not have such professional scenery as that seen in Puss in Boots' input. Talking t,o some of the cast however revealed that they enjoyed much as we the experience just as,Alan-a-Dafe'did and memories are sti1l with the words "Do you r approached vivid. He immediately burst into song remember Lhe panto in Lg47?". with one of the chorus numbers an:l sung it right through. wtrat,s more he lras word perfect. one of the babes (Ann Johnson?) was taken i11 before one of the performances and a very young understudy in the form of Pat Thake (now Pat Rust) had to steP into the breach. During one chorus number, the Merry Men were singing'come Landlord fill the FJ.owing Bowl' and brandishing their tankards when an astute member of the Debden audience sitting in the front row was heard to remark "They've got the real thiug in Joan Thake assures me however those glasses. DEBDEN YOIITE FOOTBALL

Those of you who read these reports I write each month (someone must), know that one of the words I use most frequently is "enthusiasm". We1l, after the performance of Debden Youth against Spartak of Saffron Walden, where we rrere thrashed 0-7, one or two new words entered 'my vocabulary (not to be repeated). So, after a verbal lashing at the following Sat,urday's training when the Lads' legs were almosL run off them, another word entered the scene - PASSION. They a1l left the 'Meadows' brainwashed into some positive thinking. I'm sure half of them went home muttering "We are the best, we are t.he best".

Sunday ar.rived, bathed in sunshine and quite. a crowd had gathered as the referee started the match. After a few minutes we were 1'-0 up. Soon, Grange scored and the "here we go again" thoughts started to creep back. Then, BANG!, two goals by Danny Wil,dman in ten minutes had us 3-1 up. The crowd. was screaming and I was doing cartwheels down the touchline. As we changed ends at half time, still 3-1 ahead, our luck (and the wind) changed. The final result was a 3-4 win for Grange but the lads came off to rapturous applause. Could all of the months coaching and training be starting show results or was it a'flash in the pan'. Who knows?

l-ap' of the football season, we can look forward to some entertaining football. Our under 11 league are having a small end of season trophy competition, giving us a chance to sbow our new found form. Then, looking forward to June, we have entered two teams for our league's S-a-side competition in Bishops Stortford.
So, who knows what new adjectives will be applied to the teams performances in the weeks to come. Last week's gane left me with one; I was PROUD to be part of our team's splendid disptay.

ln were Reg and Evle Boatman, and there they have remained untll thls day - neighbours who have never had a cross word, who knew that each would supply the other's need when necessary and lf possible, without hesltatlon.

Even tempered and good natured, John has been a popular figure in the vlllage all hls llfe. Football contlnued to hold his attentlon, and he formed an ran an under-l4s team for some time

(wtth Kerry as star player, of course).

John demanded hlgh standards of hlmself and others - hls house bears wltness to the quallty of his work; as do many other houses in the vlllage - and he dlsplayed a constant devotlon to hls mother, who a few years ago became one of our almspeople ln the High Street. There's a special sadness ln the loss of a chlld at any age, and our love and prayers are especlally for Mrs Holgate, as well as Betty, son Kerry, slster Doris and so many others who deeply regret John's death.

The "pirit of optimism and positive thinking needs to be regenerated. It,s not aS if }'e lack for talent and ability - both parishes are well stocked with people full of gifts and graces' AII members of the Electoral Rolls of the parishes will attend the Annual Meetings as a matter of honour - but that leaves room for plenty more. ThereareslotstobefilledinDebden-butitseemstheremay be at least one candidaLe for the position of churchwarden (might there have to be a vote?)' That would still leave us looking for a Treasurer and a Secretary' at the churchwardens are sworn into office at a special ceremony VisitationoftheDeanerybytheArchdeacon-averyBarchester occasion that badly needs cheerinq up' I don,t mean that it is not a serious business - would that it' (just for a were taken more seriously! - but just once a year an Archdeacon! few minutes!)
