JULY 15, 2012 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOD CHOSE US
Who chose first, God or you? That is the question explored in todays three readings. The second reading, from Pauls Letter to the Ephesians, reads almost like a hymn. It praises God for choosing us, for calling us to serve, and for blessing us in our service. Paul makes it clear how honored we are and how special is the call to live as children of God. This is through no doing of our own. The first reading and the Gospel use prose rather than poetry to describe the same truth: God did the choosing, not us. When the prophet Amos was berated for being a prophet, he retorted that the whole thing wasnt his idea in the first place. Neither did the twelve apostles in todays Gospel ask for their calling. Jesus sent them forth, two by two, to do the work of his kingdom.

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

The National Pilgrim Virgin Statue of the USA is a lovely hand-carved Image of Our Lady of Fatima given to our country by the Bishop of Fatima in 1967 and crowned by Cardinal O'Boyle in the National Basilica in Washington, DC in 1971. The Statue was blessed by Pope Paul VI during his visit to Fatima in 1967. The statue can be the focal point of renewing interest in the Fatima Message and informing many Catholics who are unaware of the important message of conversion and peace brought by the Mother of God to three shepherd children in 1917 at Fatima, Portugal. The Statue travels around America under the sponsorship of the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA, spreading the important Message of Fatima. If you are a woman seeking a renewal of your faith, a deeper relationship with Christ and the support of a small Catholic community, Cursillo is the answer. The Womens 114th Cursillo in the Joliet Diocese will be held August 9th-12th. Please contact Father Peter, if you are interested in attending. Cursillo, which means short course in Christianity is a lay Catholic Movement which began 60 years ago in Spain and is now worldwide. It begins with a 72-hour, three-day weekend where you will form and live in community with other Catholics and clergy members. The weekend is immersed in Catholic Doctrine and the Sacraments. The first night is a silent retreat and the rest of the weekend includes daily Mass, prayer, rosary and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Candidates listen to 15 apostolic talks given by laity and clergy and take part in small discussion groups following each talk. The Sacrament of Reconciliation as well as spiritual direction is available on the weekend. For applications and more information go to www.jolietcursillo.org

Ushers and Greeters: A Ministry of Hospitality

This is one of the most critical ministries at CTK. Our Ushers and Greeters are the first people you see when you enter the church. They are there to extend a warm welcome and to make it easy and comfortable to find a seat. They are also critical for safety, service and helpful information. The only thing you need to be an usher is a willingness to serve others and not be afraid to say hi to people. Job Description in Short: Must be able to commit to the same Mass time every week for a commitment period of one year Must be able to come 20 minutes before Mass Be willing to serve people, take the offering Be the smiling face everyone sees entering and exiting our church Anyone interested in becoming part of our usher/greeter ministry is asked to contact Bill Runge at 630-396-6075, or email him at bill@ctklombard.org.

A Stewardship Prayer for July

You sent your Son into our lives to make us a new creation through the power of your Spirit and the healing waters of Baptism. Through this same Spirit open our hearts, rekindle our faith, and give us the courage to proclaim the Good News to those who do not know Christ or who have turned away. Then may the joy we share in Christ Jesus bring peace and hope to a troubled world much in need of experiencing your saving grace. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus your Son who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

Protecting Gods Children Class

Do - Re - Mi Its not too early to start thinking about the new Choir Season
September is around the corner. I know we dont want to think about it yet, but we all know how quickly the seasons pass. With Labor Day comes the start of CTKs Choral season and all parishioners are invited to participate in one or more of the many music ministries. The Kings Choir: This choir is open to all parishioners high-school aged and older. No previous musical experience is necessary. The only prerequisite is that you enjoy singing. The Kings Choir rehearses on Wednesdays, beginning September 5, from 7:00pm-9:00pm in the church. Advanced registration is required to ensure enough music is purchased. Teen Ensemble: Our Teen Ensemble is for all teenaged parishioners who play an instrument and/or sing. Instrumentalists should, at minimum, be able to play melodies out of the music issue. More advanced music is available to those musicians who are further in their studies. The Teen Ensemble only rehearses one Sunday morning per month prior to the mass they are playing/singing at. Music is given the previous month, and the student must practice on his/her own. Childrens Choir: Our Childrens Choir has grown tremendously over the past few years. This year, we will have separate rehearsals for singers and instrumentalists, but they will be together on Sunday. The Childrens Choir rehearses weekly, and attendance is mandatory. The choir sings at mass once per month. Childrens Orchestra: Last year, we were combined with the Childrens Choir, and although we will still be at mass together, we will rehearse separately. The Childrens Orchestra rehearses weekly, and attendance is mandatory. The orchestra plays at mass once per month. Cantors: Cantors are the brave souls who lead us in song each week. Although formal musical education is not required, an understanding of music and natural talent is. Christ the King invites parishioners of all ages to become a cantor. You will begin as an intern, working with a current cantor to help raise your confidence (and calm your nerves!) Anyone interested in any of the above music ministries is asked to contact our Music Director, Bill Runge, at 630-396-6075, or email him at bill@ctklombard.org.

Year of the Eucharist 2010-2011 Christian Service Commission

July 15, 2012

The mission of Christ the Kings Christian Service Commission is to enable the parish community to put into practice the social teachings of the church as encouraged and expressed by the corporal works of mercy. The commission encourages continuation and growth in activities and ministries that reflect the needs in parish diversity. Members of this commission includes, and are not limited to, representatives from any of the following ministries and parish organizations: Council of Catholic Women, Hospitality Weekend, Ministers of Care, Knights of Columbus, Marthas Circle, Ministers of Consolation, Ministers of Praise, Newcomers, Public Action to Deliver Shelter (P.A.D.S.), St. Josephs Table, and St. Vincent De Paul. The work of these organizations and ministries are as follows: Council of Catholic Women (CCW) acts to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service. CCW programs respond with Gospel values to the needs of the Church and society in the modern world. Ministers of Care are trained to bring the Eucharist and a greeting from the parish to the homebound and hospitalized parishioners, generally on a weekly basis and/or will conduct Communion services at retirement centers. Hospitality Weekend coordinators provides an opportunity for parishioners to meet and socialize after Mass and to be aware of the many ministries and commissions who host the monthly hospitality. Knights of Columbus provides men of the parish with spiritual, educational, social and service opportunities. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal and charitable mens organization dedicated to promoting the concepts of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Marthas Circle provides a luncheon, when requested, for the family and guests of those buried from Christ The King. Ministers of Consolation are parishioners are trained to make visits to wakes, assist in planning and funeral liturgy, be present on the day of burial, and to keep in touch with and support the bereaved families. Ministers of Praise: A spiritual ministry that connects the homebound, sick and disabled with the Parish, giving them a role to pray in Parish life via a monthly newsletter. Newcomers goals are to: see that each new parish family meets with a staff member or other parishioner one-on-one; be sure that each is individually welcomed; point out many of the areas of potential involvement and invite the newcomer to take an active role in the parish. To assist the new families to feel at home in liturgies and community events. Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS): Our commitment to provide food, clothing, and shelter for the homeless of Du Page County is a paradigm of the independent sectors providing some semblance of human dignity to these the least of Christs brethren. The parishioners of Christ the King provide needed support as well as individual involvement with these dedicated volunteers at the PADS site. St. Vincent DePaul Society helps the needy in a variety of ways: a food pantry as needed; assist, especially to parishioners, in temporary financial need; financial assistance to our Parish PADS; and coordination with other parishes and agencies for referral and assistance. The Christian Service Commission meets during the parish leadership meetings on the first Tuesday of every other month beginning in September. Parishioners who serve on this commission include: Martha Cebulski, Jarrod Cebulski, Madalene Cannata, Deacon Peter Robinson, Bill Richards, Mary Ellen Clish, Joe Iapichino and Eddie Sowa. If you have an interest in knowing more about any of these ministries or in volunteering to chair or serve on a ministry of the Administration Commission, please contact the Commission Chairman, Martha Cebulski at casadecebulski@comcast.net or call the parish rectory.
