SONG & HOW TO SING

JR: As a Child of God SR: In Our Lovely Deseret (this song, although in the hymnbook now, was originally a primary song in the old orange songbook. When the bee is held up, everyone bzzz like a bee. When the bee is down, sing normally. When Brigham Young led the pioneers to Utah, it was such a desert that no one else wanted, but the pioneers were determined to make it their home and so they worked very hard to make a beautiful place to live in Utah. In the Book of Mormon, the word Deseret that comes from the Jaredite language means honeybee. Have you ever watched bees? They are very hard working and busy all the time. Because the pioneers were such hard workers, Brigham Young wanted to name the state Deseret but the U.S. Congress wouldnt let them. Utah still uses the beehive as a state symbol of industry. BUFFALO CHIP Little Pioneer Children Sing the song while plugging the nose with one hand and doing actions with the other hand. Could switch out the actions for the action of picking up buffalo chips with the other hand. How would you pick them up? Pioneers needed to make fires along their journey so they could cook their food, but wood was not easy to come by, so they had to use buffalo chips. Do you know what buffalo chips are? They are what we call cow pies today. Children would help hunt these buffalo chips for wood, just like it says in the song Little Pioneer Children. When you cook your food over a campfire, ashes usually get on your food. Can you imagine cooking your food and having the ashes from buffalo chips land on it? YUM-YUM! HANDCART The Handcart Song Children partner up and while holding hands, do push and pull actions to the beat of the music Or do the actions. Many pioneers could not afford to have a covered wagon or animals to help pull the wagons full of their belongings, so many pioneers used handcarts and had to pull and push their own carts full of their belongings. Imagine if you had to fit all of your stuff in a little read wagon and have to pull it every day and all day long. CAMPFIRES The Wise Man and the Foolish Man Sing with the lights out and only using the campfire lights and or lanterns or flashlights. Pioneers used campfires to cook their food and to help keep them warm. It also gave them light to see in the dark. At night when they rested, they would visit and sing songs around the campfire. MOUNTAINS

To Be a Pioneer Divide primary into two to four groups and do echo singing by phrases (one group sings the first phrase, then the next group and so on. Then you repeat the process for each phrase. Let the pianist know he/she will need to play each phrase 2 to 4 times throughout the entire song. When the pioneers reached the Rocky Mountains, many of them had never seen such big mountains before. These big mountains were very difficult for them to travel on, but as they did, Im sure they discovered that in the mountains whatever they said or sang would echo back at them. Echoes are made when the sound you make hits a mountain wall and bounces back to you and the more walls there are, the more places for the sound to bounce off of so there would be even more echoes. OX 219 The Oxcart 4/4 Sing slow and in a low voice as if the oxen were singing and roll arms in a circular motion as if wheels are rolling or pair up like oxen with arms on shoulder as a yoke and sway side-to-side while singing. Have a some children use the fluted rhythm instruments to make the creaking sound Mules and horses are strong and can go faster than oxen but are sometimes trickier to handle. Oxen are very SLOOOOOOW animals. They could only walk about 2-3 miles an houryou can ride your bicycle a lot faster than thatbut oxen were tougher and stronger than horses and mules. They could pull a heavy wagon up steep, narrow places in the mountains (ravines) or drag them out of mud holes much easier than horses or mules. Oxen didnt need to eat hay or straw and they didnt need to eat much either. They could eat the poor grass along the trails and still work hard. So many pioneers used them to pull their heavy wagons on their long and hard journey. SNAKES Covered Wagons Whisper sing when the snake is held up and sing normal when the snake is hidden behind the back. Sing reverently and quietly. There were lots of rattlesnakes that the pioneers would see as they walked. They had to be careful so a snake wouldnt bite them or the animals wouldnt get scared. NATIVE 214 Pioneer Children Sang as They Walked AMERICAN 6/8 Chair hopping on the word walked CHILD (2B) Pioneers met many different Native American Indian tribes along their journey. White people did not usually treat the Indians very nicely, so the Indians did not like them. However, pioneers did not have very many problems with the Indians like most others did. This is partly because of The Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon talks about many Native American Indians and many of tribes came from those spoken about in The Book of Mormon. Because the Mormon pioneers knew about the Native Americans from the stories in The Book of Mormon, the pioneers were kind and did not try to fight or take things from the Native American Indians. They sometimes traded things with each other. 221 3/4

CRICKET Sing staccato like how crickets jump Have a child keep the rhythm with the rhythm sticks After Brigham Young led the first Pioneers here to Utah, in the spring the pioneers had planted crops, but later as summer started swarms of crickets came and were eating all their crops. If the crickets destroyed all their crops, they would not have any food and could starve to death. They didnt have grocery stores to go shopping for food back then. After much praying and fasting by the pioneers, lots and lots of seagulls appeared and would eat the crickets, then drink water and then throw up what they had eaten because they ate so much, but then the seagulls would go and eat more again and then would drink more water and throw up again. The seagulls kept doing this over and over. This helped save the food crop for the pioneers so they wouldnt starve. Pioneer Children Sang as They Walked Sing Western Style 6/8 Have the children stand in a circle around the campfire and each time (2B) the word walked, they take a step or could have them walk around the campfire as they sing. Pioneers traveled a very long way. They did not have cars or airplanes to take them places like we do now. Those werent invented yet. They had to walk or ride in their covered wagons. Can you imagine walking hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of miles? The pioneers traveled 1,300 miles from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake. WHEW! That makes me tired just thinking about it. BOOT 214
