Press Release
State Of California LULAC

Press Release July 24, 2012

Contact: Benny Diaz (714) 357-4328 www.california-LULAC.org The State Office of the League of United Latin American Citizens is calling for a federal inquiry into an officer involved shooting (OIS) in the City of Anaheim this past Friday, the sixth such occurrence this year. LULAC California State Director Benny Diaz today requested that the Federal Bureau of Investigation initiate an investigation into the weekend shooting death of Manuel Diaz (no relation). The action was taken in response to public outrage that resulted in protests in Anaheim last weekend. There appears to be great mistrust between residents and the police department Diaz said. LULAC, a national civil rights organization, wants the FBI to determine whether Diaz civil rights were violated during Sundays shooting. In addition there are further questions regarding the possible use of excessive force by Anaheim Police as they sought to control the resultant commotion.

In addition, Diaz called on the U.S Department of Justice Community Relations Service to facilitate a discussion between community leaders and Anaheim city officials regarding concern that the Anaheim Police Department was overbearing and acted out of police policy when officers shot bean bag less than lethal ammunition at close range and without provocation and released attack dogs on at least one woman and her child. A man was clearly bitten on his back. Afterward, authorities moved painstakingly slow to assist persons who were obviously traumatized by the events of that day. Diaz urged Anaheim residents to be patient, and to curtail any planned protests and wait to see if a resolution can be reached. Mr. Diaz urged caution but also said he fully understood the emotions that had erupted among the citizenry. He called for non-violent means to address the difficulties. Serving our community since 1929, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the largest and oldest Hispanic membership organization in the country, advances the economic conditions, educational attainment, political influence, health, housing and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 880 LULAC councils nationwide.
