August is the month we tend to focus on child wellness and back to school. Considering how fast June and July just flew by for most vacationing students, they seem better able to relate to their parents constant lamenting, Where has the time gone? Indeed, they grow up too fast. As the countdown to another school year begins, its only natural that parents start to assess the health of their little scholars. While it is clear that we must encourage our children to get enough activity each day, it can be a real challenge getting them to eat right and providing them with the supplements their growing bodies need. Multivitamins? Essential fatty acids? Calcium? Vitamin C? It can be overwhelming! Since the real answer is unique for each child, depending on their diet and other factors, it is important that you connect with their pediatrician or a certified nutritionist at your natural health store. And dont forget their eyes! August happens to be Childrens Eye Health & Safety Month. This is the perfect time of year to set up a vision exam to ensure they start off the school year on the right foot with adequate vision and overall eye health. Having had a glaucoma scare recently with a dear teenage friend of our family, I can attest to the value of a thorough exam each year. Parents have much to consider for the health of their children! While it may feel overwhelming at times, possibly the best thing you can do is be a good example for them. It is amazing how much children pick up on just by watching our healthy choices. I hope this months issue is a valuable resource for you in your efforts. Marcia Simler encourages us to incorporate natural herbs into our diet to overcome some familiar dietary problems. Jacy Sundlie shares her knowledge about tension and trauma releasing exercises (TRE). And, Susan Shinn has some insights about improving our lives with color therapy. Please read on for more
great educational articles! Now, let the countdown for back to school begin! In health and happiness,

he contagious nature of moods is so familiar that we forget to wonder how it works when humor or irritability spreads through an office, or excitement or panic spreads through a crowd. Timing can be contagious too: performing groups, teams, people chanting in unison, and even wolves hunting together can synchronize their voices or movements as perfectly as if they shared a single consciousness.

personal hygiene and toilet use) and psychosocial well-being (involvement in relationships). Understanding the relationship between quality of life and PCM is becoming increasingly important for seniors. Part of the reason why many adults eat less protein is that as we age, we have a harder time digesting food, especially proteins, because our bodies slowly lose vital digestive enzymes. This creates indigestion, bloating, gas, constipation and more. For seniors, the problem compounds when they have to deal with chronic illness that prevents them from cooking healthy meals, medications that cause loss of appetite, trouble chewing and swallowing due to dentures or cavities, or even frailty. Major loss of muscle itself can actually cause a loss of appetite due to changes in body chemistry. A simple way to maintain healthy muscle mass as we age is to supplement with protein. The key is to find a protein supplement that is healthy, easy-to-digest, non-allergenic and not loaded with tons of sugars, artificial sweeteners, cholesterol and preservatives. There are many reasons for wanting to build muscle as you get older, but four stand out: 1. More muscle in your legs and hips gives you better balance, which reduces your chances of falling. 2. If you should fall, the more muscle you have surrounding your bones, the less likely you are to break them when you fall.
your bones are. The very existence of muscle in your body puts tension on your bones, which causes them to strengthen. 4. Lack of strength compromises the quality of your life as you age. Having sufficient muscle and strength to do the things you want to do without assistance, leads to a happy life.

ooking to create a sustainable lifestyle? One sure way is to support local family farmers through a program called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSA programs involve purchasing a share of a farm and becoming part of a community. In return, the farm provides CSA members a bushel full of wholesome produce on a weekly or biweekly basis throughout the growing season. Most farms list the types of vegetables they grow and

Mid-season vegetables are typically beets, cabbage, zucchini, broccoli and tomatoes. Late-season vegetables are cauliflower, winter squash, pumpkins and Brussels sprouts. The boxes are delivered during a specified time to scheduled delivery locations. Some CSA programs include specialty items, such as honey, fruit, eggs and jams. An investment in a CSA program enables the farm to plan their fields, purchase seeds and supplies, and ready equipment. As a shareholder, there is excitement and joy in the abundant harvest. On the flip side, if weather or insect infestation damages the fields, the shareholder may experience a modified bounty. Visiting a local farm also promotes sustainability. Learn what goes on at a farm through school field trips, tours and lectures. Special events such as seasonal farm parties and yoga classes enliven the community and promote wellness. Meet the farmers and walk the land! at the microscopic level exhibit constant flux and interchange of matter and energy as electrons orbit atoms and cells burn sugar to fuel metabolism. Energy work less structured than acupressure/puncture, such as Reiki, is also used to treat both psychological and physical symptoms. In hands-on energy work, the vibration that comes through working hands oscillates across a spectrum so that it periodically resonates with the ideal (healthy) frequency of the physical organ or tissue being treated. The area being treated catches that vibration and initiates natural self-healing processes.2 Uses of laser light, ultrasound, and artificial electrical or magnetic fields to stimulate healing work on the same principle of entrainment. Medical healing devices are set to specific frequencies known to help specific processes such as bone repair.** So if entrainment is real and applies to states of mind, how do we avoid being pulled into feelings we dont want when were surrounded by them? holistic grooming
What to look for in your groomer .................................................
by michelle Lonergan
olistic grooming is the practice of grooming your pet in a stress-free environment in order to provide optimal health for both body and mind.
Puppy grooms are critical in developing trust between groomer and puppy. A puppys first groom should be between three and four months. The first few visits to the groomer should be limited to 30 minutes and should only include a bath with slow introductions to the dryer, clippers and shears. The groomer should allow time to interact with the puppy with lots of positive reinforcement for good behavior. Trust and mutual respect developed early between groomer and puppy provides for a life-long, stress-free relationship.

The most costly expense to a grooming salon is the products used on your dog and cat. Holistic grooming understands that highquality products are essential for a healthy skin and coat and will not compromise health for cost. Holistic groomers have a strong background and interest in nutrition and will provide you with sound advice on the best diet and supplements specific to your pet. Who sees deeper into the health of your dogs skin, mouth, ears, nails and anal glands more than a groomer? Experienced holistic groomers have a history of seeing many aliments and have seen the successes of recommending tailored diets and supplements to promote a healthier pet. Through proper diet and supplements, you can improve your pets quality of life with healthier skin and coat, cleaner teeth, reduced ear infections and tear stains, and fewer anal gland issues.
Cage dryers are the leading cause of death in grooming salons, yet they are used on over 80% of dogs groomed nationwide. A cage dryer is an automatic coat dryer that hangs on the door of a cage and blows directly on a caged dog. More invasive are the hot box cage drying units that include plexiglass for the cage walls to prevent the blown air from escaping. Most dogs are extremely fearful of cage dryers, as it is very difficult for them to breathe. Lack of fresh air causes labored breathing and rapid heartbeat,
www.naturespathways.com
which can lead to a heart attack. Cage dryers cause extreme anxiety, which develops into a lifelong fear of grooming. Alternatively, a velocity dryer should be used and hand operated so caution can be made in sensitive areas. If your dog has been exposed to a cage dryer and has now developed a fear of grooming, seek out a holistic groomer who can rehabilitate your dog to elevate the fear with a slow introduction to a more humane way of drying.

Many salons have an assembly line model that requires you to drop off early and pick up 6-8 hours later. The purpose is to allow bathers to pre-wash your pet and place in cage dryers for long periods of time until the dog is dry. This hands-off procedure allows the groomers to knock off more dogs, creating a more profitable business. Holistic salons will take in one dog at a time, with the professional groomer working hands-on from bath to drying to haircut.

Dogs and cats are extremely intuitive to our emotions. They pick up the chemicals we excrete from our bodies created from our own emotions. They know when we exhibit stresses because of anger, frustration or feeling rushed. As a result of their pack mentality, a dog interprets these stresses as unbalanced and they begin to lose confidence and trust in us as their pack leader. It is critical that a groomer practice mind-balancing techniques before beginning any groom and maintain this balance throughout the entire groom.
Small salons are less stressful for a groomer and will ultimately provide for a less stressful environment for your dog or cat.

Question: I have a very simple question for you how often should I weigh myself? answer: Assuming youre trying to lose weight, it really depends on where you are in the weight loss process and how sensitive you are to the results. If youre in the early stages of active weight loss, Id only recommend weighing in once every one to two weeks. Keeping it to a minimum will help you focus more on your behaviors. After all, consistency is key when it comes to both diet and exercise, and obsessing about the numbers on the scale wont change anything. And lets not forget that it can take some time for the scale to start trending down, especially if youve just started an exercise program. However, if youve reached your weight loss goals and youre now in maintenance mode,
Id recommend weighing yourself more frequently. Thats right I said more often, and theres actually research to support this. The logic behind it is simple: if youre weighing more frequently, youll be able to quickly identify weight gain trends and respond accordingly. A couple days each week is probably enough to keep you at or near your target. Theres one last point thats important here, and it sort of goes without saying. The number on the scale is just one aspect of the weight loss process. In other words, tracking other metrics of success, like how youre feeling, your circumference measurements and your body composition, are just as important! Question: People keep telling me that MOST supplements simply dont work. If thats the case, can you tell me which ones do work well? answer: I would agree that there are many supplements out there with very strong marketing but little research to support either their efficacy or safety. That said, there are some tried and true supplements that may help improve health and/or performance, but the decision to use them or not depends on what your specific goals are. Without knowing much more about your particular situation, heres a short list of what I like to
www.naturespathways.com
call foundational supplements that may be beneficial in one way or another: Multivitamin/mineral Fish oil Sports nutrition bars Sports drinks Protein powder Pre- and post-workout formulas Creatine Caffeine
MADISON
WISCONSIN
These are generally considered to be safe supplements that either promote health or provide some ergogenic benefit. However, this is by no means an exhaustive list, so my advice would be to talk to a registered dietitian so they can help you determine whether a specific supplement is appropriate for you. Question: A friend of mine keeps telling me I should be doing more compound movements. What does this mean and what are the benefits? answer: Your friend is right! Isolated movements are really more appropriate for targeting weak areas or for rehabilitating after an injury. Todays fitness trends typically involve more functional movements that mimic real-life activities. Thats why compound exercises are becoming so popular. Theyre essentially just multijoint exercises that work several muscles at a time. Examples include pull-ups, push-ups, squats, lunges, deadlifts, kettlebell swings, dips and even jumping rope. And this is only scratching the surface when it comes to compound exercises. There are numerous reasons to incorporate more compound movements into your training. Here are just a few of the benefits: Provides a full-body workout in a shorter period of time. Improves coordination, reaction time and balance. Provides cardiovascular benefits by keeping your heart rate elevated. Decreases risk of injury during sports. Burns more calories. Allows for heavier lifts that will build strength faster. I highly recommend adding compound movements to your workout regimen, and if you give them a try, have fun with them and get creative. Think of new ways to use stability balls, medicine balls, Bosu balls, bands, kettlebells, ropes and, of course, your own body weight to work multiple muscle groups at a time!

how and why do people benefit from periodic Tre practice, stress management and popular relaxation techniques?
Stress, anxiety and trauma are common events in peoples lives. They often experience stress on a daily level, either at home or at work. The body constantly responds to elevated levels of stress by contracting the muscles to get through the problem. However, we seldom recognize these contractions until we experience pain, discomfort or illness. Conflict is caused by stress and tension whether at work or home. suddenly during the night. This pain can be significant, and many who have had gout have described the pain as throbbing or excruciating. The affected joint may appear warm and red and will likely be very tender, so much so that even laying a bed sheet over the affected joint will prove painful. Attacks may go away after a few days, but many people with gout will have another attack, even if the attacks are years apart. Some may even develop chronic gout, which can lead to joint damage and loss of motion in the joints.
what is gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid builds up in the blood, causing inflammation of the joints. The big toe often bears the initial brunt of the pain resultant from gout, which can cause sudden attacks of burning, pain and stiffness. If these attacks go untreated, they can harm joints, tendons and other tissues. Acute gout will be painful, but likely only affect one joint. Chronic gout may involve more than one joint and is characterized by repeated episodes of pain and inflammation.
Doctors may conduct a handful of tests if they suspect you have gout. These tests can include joint X-rays; a blood test to check levels of uric acid in the blood; a urine test to determine if uric acid levels in your urine are high; or a synovial biopsy in which a piece of the tissue lining the affected joint is removed to determine if there are any inflammatory conditions.
What causes uric acid to build up in the body is not always known and many times excessive uric acid is not harmful. The body can simply make too much uric acid or have difficulty getting rid of it. When too much uric acid builds up in the fluid around the joints, uric acid crystals can form, causing inflammation and swelling of the joints.
If the doctor has diagnosed a gout attack, then he or she might give you a shot of corticosteroids, which will be injected into the inflamed joint to relieve the pain. Other treatment options include prescription medicines or even nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen. Aspirin, however, might raise uric acid levels in the blood, which can make the attack worse. Upon treatment, a gout attack will likely go away within 12 to 48 hours, though treatment might not prevent another attack in the future.
Just because a person has high uric acid in their blood does not mean he or she has gout. In fact, many people have higher-thannormal levels of uric acid in their blood and never develop gout. The people most susceptible to gout are those who are overweight or drink excessive amounts of alcohol. People with diabetes, sickle cell anemia or other anemias, kidney disease, or leukemia and other blood cancers may also be more susceptible to gout. Gout is also more common in men, but women, especially those after menopause, can still develop gout. Some medicines, including diuretics, can also bring on gout.
Prevention options should be discussed with your physician, but lifestyle changes, including changes to your diet, can help prevent another attack. Eating more carbohydrates while limiting how much meat you consume can prevent another attack. Avoiding alcohol is another preventive measure. Men and women who want to lose weight to prevent another attack should do so slowly, as rapid weight loss may result in the formation of uric acid kidney stones. When treated properly, men and women with gout can return to living a normal life. Consult your physician if you feel any of the aforementioned symptoms or if you suspect you might have gout.

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, Over the last year Ive noticed a gradual change in my attitude about life and the people around me. I have been getting more and more irritable, frustrated, angry and annoyed. Even though I feel these things, I dont recognize myself at all. I have always been the one that others go to for support and help. I used to pride myself on that. I want to get myself back, but I just dont want to be around anyone. What can I do? Negative Nancy Dear Negative Nancy, First of all, dont beat yourself up. Doing so will only set in more unproductive energy that you will have to clear up to find yourself again. Listen to what comes up for you and express it. My guess would be that you are actually a natural healer meaning you have an innate gift to channel energy through you to the ground, filter or shift energy around you. It seems like you have done this your entire life and unfortunately boundaries were not in place. Little by little you likely absorbed so much energy from those around you and in return you depleted your own natural energy. In order to remedy this situation, your system naturally shut down a little. That is why you feel like you dont want to be around
18
Natures Pathways | august 2012
people. Depending on which healing gift you have, you likely shut down the matching chakra (or a few) so as to not absorb or give away any more energy. Now, it may not be the best way to protect you because it is changing your attitude a bit; however, it was the fastest way you could control what was happening to you. Your gift was spinning out of control and you instinctually halted it in its tracks. The two most important things you should be focusing on during this time are grounding and boundaries. Grounding (briefly put) is your stable connection that allows you to release and let go of energy that doesnt serve you, leaving you room for your own replenishing energy to return. Boundaries are your way of defining what is you and what is not you. Boundaries dont necessarily restrict energy from coming and going like your system is doing now, instead they act as an alarm system. A good boundary will alert you if there is an intruder or, in this case, energy that is not yours to keep. Grounding and boundaries are, in my opinion, the two most important energy techniques one can use to maintain their energy and fulfill their purpose in life. There are many techniques to achieve both of these, and we go over a number of them in our self-healing courses at The Chakra House. We also carry a number of books on energy techniques like these in our boutique. Good luck, and keep remembering who you really are!
Tina, a Madison-based intuitive counselor and energy healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

The body intuitively knows how and when to put itself to sleep. Difficulty sleeping is simply a symptom that something is out of balance with the body. Sleeplessness is often the signal that stress, anxiety and tension are causing the sleep mechanism to not activate properly. TRE elicits deep muscular relaxation, which induces the body to activate the rest/digest, relaxation response of the parasympathetic nervous system that allows the body to sleep. Resiliency can be attained when the individual can work, respond to stress, play and then rest.
how does Tre compliment yoga, meditation, exercise workouts and spiritual practices?
how is it used as a therapeutic tool to reduce anxiety, anger, stress, tension and post trauma symptoms?
Exercise, workouts and yoga often reduce tension in the muscles and help increase strength and flexibility. Many tension patterns and contractions are deep inside the body, often without our conscious awareness. TRE uncovers these less conscious but obvious tension patterns. The contractions release tension at this deeper level. When this occurs, the body takes on greater flexibility and resilience. This increased awareness of a deeper sense of self often extends itself into the realm of the spiritual to which many people aspire. Once there is a deeper felt sense of self, there is a natural deeper sense of connection to others and the universe or the spiritual.
These symptoms can be difficult to manage at times. They might seem overwhelming. The process of using this tool in a therapeutic context provides the therapist with the ability to use the body as part of the stress reduction process without needing to have advanced degrees in body psychotherapy.
Since this shaking mechanism in the muscles is part of our natural behavior as humans, everyone can benefit from TRE. hen todays parents reflect on their childhood, many likely recall seemingly endless days spent playing outdoors. But when todays kids become tomorrows parents, chances are their recollections wont recall nearly as much time spent idling the days away under the sun. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 17 percent of American children and adolescents between the ages of 2 to 19 are obese. In Canada, where self-reporting data collection methods have made such statistics more difficult to quantify, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children is also on the rise, according to the Canadian Community Health Survey. The rise in overweight or obese children is likely a byproduct of several factors, not the least of which is that many of todays kids prefer to play a video game on the couch instead of going outdoors and being physically active. The potential ramifications of youngsters choosing a more sedentary lifestyle are dangerous, as it increases their risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, respiratory ailments and joint problems, among other things. Whats more, numerous studies have found that obese or overweight children are more likely to become obese or overweight adults, which highlights the importance of embracing a physically active lifestyle as a youngster. Parents know its not always easy to get kids to be more physically active. But the following are a few tips parents might find useful when encouraging their kids to embrace a more active lifestyle. Give toys that encourage physical activity. Kids love toys, and their toys will often dictate how they spend their days. Instead of buying the latest video game console, give kids toys that encourage them to be active. This can include balls, bicycles, jump ropes, or even a backyard swingset. Kids who embrace these activities at a young age are more likely to continue doing so into adolescence and adulthood.

effectively minimize the amount of time their child spends in front of the television, whether reducing their time spent watching television or playing video games, will likely be more successful at instilling a love of physical activity as well. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents limit their childrens time in front of the television to one to two hours per day, and that includes the time children spend playing video games. To further reduce kids time watching TV, dont allow televisions in their bedrooms, as that will only make it harder to monitor just how much time kids are spending in front of their TVs. Remember that physical activity should be fun. Not all kids are athletic, and some will likely bemoan participating in recreational sports leagues. But that doesnt mean parents should give up on encouraging physical activity. Instead, find a physical activity that your child finds fun and encourage his or her participation. This might be nontraditional kids sports like cycling or jogging or activities like dancing, hiking or even bird watching. Once a child exhibits a healthy interest in a physical activity that you have deemed safe, encourage it. Set a positive example. Kids, especially younger children, look up to their parents and often try to emulate what mom and dad are doing. Parents can make the most of that adoration by setting a positive example and being physically active themselves. Go for a nightly bike ride or a walk around the neighborhood with your youngsters in tow. Or put that elliptical machine in the basement to good use. Whatever physical activity you choose, you can bet your children will express an interest in it as well, and thats a great way to make them more enthusiastic about having a healthy and active lifestyle.

Test for proper home ventilation. Not only does proper ventilation reduce energy usage, but it also results in relief for allergy sufferers. By adequately replacing indoor air with outdoor air, you reduce mold growth, pollution, allergens, odors, moisture and dangerous compound build-up in your home. Ostrowski adds, Also, keep in mind that improper ventilation shortens the life of shingles and causes early deterioration. Ventilation can be a natural process, which is the oldest and most cost effective way to achieve air exchange. Then, whole house and spot ventilation, which make use of fans, are options. In this case, consider solar power vents.
SIDING
Think sustainability. When looking for siding, Ostrowski suggests you consider each options sustainability. This entails an estimate of how long a material will last; if the material can be recycled; if it contributes to health concerns; and if itll readily biodegrade in a landfill, according to HouseLogic.com. Before applying new siding, he recommends that you consider house wrap and rigid-foam insulation to reduce energy use and condensation. Also, avoid high-maintenance materials. One option, aluminum siding, can be high in recycled content as well as recyclable at the end of its life.
INSULAtION
Ensure adequate home insulation. As Ostrowski points out, insulating appropriately is key when working toward energy efficiency and comfort, as up to 40% of a homes conditioned air escapes through the attic. New insulation technology makes todays insulation the most cost effective way to lower energy consumption as well as drastically reducing how much it costs to heat and cool your home, according to crstoroof.com. Older homes should be evaluated to determine the need for added insulation. Installing proper insulation will lower utility costs and energy loss, control sound, increase comfort, acoustics and resale value, and may qualify you for an energy tax credit. Federal Energy Guidelines recommend R49 for most of Wisconsin. It is estimated that up to 60% of homes most built before 1990 are not insulated properly.
GUtteRS
Install a catch system. Channel rainwater from the roof to use in your garden or home. Not only are you conserving water, but some states also offer individual income-tax credits to cover a percentage of the cost of these systems. (On the other hand, some states have laws that regulate rainfall harvest, claiming rainwater is state property!) By reducing the amount of rainwater that enters our storm water systems, we are avoiding further damage to local lake, river and creek habitat and further pollution, Ostrowski adds. Using rain barrels and other catch systems is a great way to do your part for conservation of our precious resources. Also be sure to choose the correct material for your gutters. According to the Green Home Remodel Guide, Unpainted galvanized gutters leach zinc into rainwater and PVC gutters contain additives that leach into rainwater and harm fish. It suggests painted aluminum gutters as the better choice.
ROOFING S MAteRIAL
Consider steel shingles. Asphalt, composition and wood shingles leave you susceptible to black streaks, early wear, missing granules, curling corners and higher energy consumption. These roofs act like sponges and soak up the intense summer sun into the attic and living space of your home. That heat breaks down the roof, overworks air conditioners and drives up energy bills, according to GreenAmericanHome.com. There are steel shingles on the market that actually reflect the suns infrared rays and eliminate some of the heat build-up in the home. Many metal shingles are made from recycled aluminum. As an added benefit, they can also be recycled when their lifetime ends. In some cases they come with a lifetime limited warranty as well as fade and chalk warranties, but are expected to last around 50 years. Recycled shingles are also an option. What may be the greenest product of all: shingles made from recycled waste materials (plastic, rubber or wood fiber). They are very durable and look good, according to Ostrowski. Of course, these help divert waste from landfills and reduce our need to extract and process raw materials, which lowers energy consumption and reduces pollution, according to MotherEarthNews. com. Some come with 50-year warranties. There are also some environmentally friendly wood shingles, which are often made from wood that was sustainably grown. And, rubber roofing, which is also made from recycled material, is another option in some states.
there are many eco-friendly products available for your home. Roofing, siding, ventilation, insulation and gutters, especially, are best left to the professionals. You should compare your options carefully.
If youre interested in more green living tips, Ostrowski suggests you check out the U.S. Department of Energys Energy Efficiency and Rewewable Energy divisions Web site. There you will find more ways to make your home easier to heat and cool as well as ways to do your part in making America more energy independent.

hile many methods for applying the energy of color therapy require specialized training or equipment, a number of techniques are easily available to the average person. With a basic understanding of which colors affect which parts of the body or mind, anyone can learn to improve and support their own emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being. The seven colors of the rainbow align to the seven major chakras and supply a basic organization with which to begin. Along with black, white and a few well-known mixtures, a basic reference can be built. While there are minor differences in the meanings assigned by various experts, the overall information is remarkably consistent: red base chakra: skeleton, legs and circulation; strengthens physical life force, energy and will; increases courage and passion. orange sacral chakra: emotional health; immune, reproductive and muscular systems; stimulates joy, sociability and creativity; helps eliminate depression and negativity. yellow solar plexus chakra: reawakens enthusiasm; increases mental focus, confidence and optimism; treats depression, digestive problems and the eliminative system. Green heart chakra: increases health, growth, balance, sensitivity and compassion; helps cardiac conditions, ulcers, exhaustion and headaches. blue throat chakra: respiratory and venous systems; intuition, communication, inspiration; eases loneliness; reduces inflammation; effectively eases childhood diseases. indigo brow chakra: lymph system, glands, immune system; face, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, sinuses; balances brain hemispheres and nerve synapses; meditation and intuition. Violet crown chakra: balances physical and spiritual energies; antiseptic, cleansing; assimilate and use minerals; inspiration,

humility, dreams, past lives; arthritis and cancer. strengthens, cleanses, purifies and stabilizes energy system; amplifies effects of any color its combined with. black entire pigment spectrum: Protective, grounding; activates feminine and magnetic energies; use sparingly and always with another color. brown grounding, common sense, discrimination; effective for emotional and mental conditions. Pink compassion, affection, love; comforts, eases anger; stimulates thymus gland and immune system. Turquoise heals burns, inflammation; helps recovery from infections; removes toxins. Too much of any color may cause problems by overloading a system, so balance with a small amount of the opposite color. We have all heard to eat a rainbow every day as a good way to balance your diet. Occasionally you have a temporary need for more of a particular nutrient. The color of a food is caused by chemical compositions of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients it contains. Therefore, eating food of the color to help a particular health issue generally captures the nutrients needed. The colors of your surroundings will affect you as well, as you look around you. Going outdoors where there is a large amount of green will balance your energies, and seeing other colors will help with various issues. If you have determined you need a certain color, look for it in a garden or natural setting. Any exercise or relaxing/meditating outdoors will increase benefits to your health by combining these healthy activities with color. Use color in your home or work areas to help as well. If you cannot paint the walls, you can use furniture, art, pillows, flower

arrangements, linens or other accessories to influence and change colors as you feel the need. In general, bedrooms are best with blues, greens or pinks. Living and family rooms are more welcoming with warm colors, while kitchens and dining rooms with yellows or oranges make digestion work better. Work or study areas benefit from the presence of yellow to encourage mental focus. In any room, remember to use some contrast to avoid too much of one color. Clothing is a personal way to carry the colors you want with you. The energy vibrations of the colors are absorbed by the skin as well as the eyes. Some experts say to use white underwear when dressing for color therapy. On the other hand, if you must wear a uniform or specific outfit for work or activity, you could wear appropriate colored underwear or carry a scarf or colored piece of fabric in a pocket or pinned inside your clothes. Use jewelry and accessories to enhance color therapy as well. Above all, choose shades and tones of colors that make you happy and look well with your coloring. Enjoy the way you feel in color!

Purslane
(Portulaca oleracea) .............................................
by Cheryl hosmer
urslane is my favorite garden weed! This herb is quite unique. Purslane is a succulent herb and contains alpha-linolenic acid, one of the highly sought after omega-3 fatty acids. Some common names include green purslane, pigweed and garden purslane. Purslane grows close to the ground with a round, smooth, reddish succulent stem. The leaves are also succulent and dark green with a small yellow flower, which blooms for only a short time around noon during the months of June and July.
www.peacefulheart.net
Purslane does better with a good amount of watering. It can make a beautiful edging to an herb garden. This common garden weed is steamed and eaten as a vegetable in many parts of the world. Energetically, purslane is cooling, so it makes a great addition to a salad in summer. GreenMedInfo.com has many studies about the benefits of the herb purslane (P. olecracea), including that it exhibits anti-inflammatory activity. Another study showed purslane efficacious in treating
oral lichen planus. Purslane had a relatively potent but transient broncho-dilatory effect on asthmatic airways in yet another study. Because purslane is mucilaginous, cooling and anti-inflammatory, it can benefit many complaints. Learn to identify this healthy herb. So, next time you see it growing in your garden dont pull it up. Instead eat the leaves in a salad! Purslane is contraindicated during pregnancy and for anyone with a cold and weak digestion.

unctional strength training is more than just a buzz phrase; its a school of thought, and a way to train your body to become stronger and more efficient so that it can perform the movements you ask it to more easily and with less risk of injury. The human body is asked to perform all sorts of movements on a daily basis walking, running, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, standing, starting, stopping, climbing and lunging,
j u s t to name a few and sometimes our bodies are called upon to perform more than one of these actions simultaneously. The movements that human bodies perform t a k e place in the three cardinal planes of movement frontal, sagittal and transverse and this must be kept top of mind when crafting
www.naturespathways.com
an effective strength training program. The frontal plane is an imaginary line that cuts the body into a front and a back half. The sagittal plane is an imaginary line that cuts the body down the middle into a right and a left side. The transverse plane is an imaginary horizontal line that cuts the body in two to create a bottom and a top half. Functional strength training increases our ability to move efficiently through all three planes of movement. The thousands of parts of our bodies do not work as individual entities to perform athletics and activities of daily living. When you lift a bag of groceries, are your biceps the only part of your body working? No. Youve got to engage your core (abdominals and back) muscles as well, whether or not you realize youre doing it. Functional strength training enhances the coordination between the nervous and muscular systems in addition to increasing the forceproducing capability of a muscle or group of muscles. So what are some examples of functional strength training exercises? Squats are one great example, and they can be modified using equipment, such as the BOSU trainer, to increase the stability challenge, thus making the exercise itself more effective. Squats effectively transfer to real life by, for example, making it easier for someone to get up off of a couch. Pushups are another great example, and transfer well to real life activities, such as pushing a lawnmower.
Bottom line include some functional strength training in your exercise routine. It will serve you well!

alorie confusion is a technique used by many in the bodybuilding world. This method can be rolled over to be used just as effectively for individuals who are trying to lose weight. Much like the muscle confusion technique, perfected by one of the gurus in the fitness industry, Tony Horton (developer of P90X programs), calorie confusion works under the same basic principles. The body is a very smart machine, thus finding the quickest and easiest way to adapt to circumstances and stresses put on it. What this means is that your body adapts to consistent routine. That is why Tony Hortons developed strategies are so successful in creating change. He has put together a system that never allows your body to adapt; therefore, continually forcing it to evolve. Now, as I explained, this technique can be rolled over into calorie confusion. This continual fluctuation in calorie consumption will keep your endocrine system guessing. The endocrine system, simply put, is the system that controls and regulates various human functions including: metabolism, growth and development, tissue function and mood. By using this technique you will keep your body from adapting to the same amount of calories being consumed day after day; therefore, keeping your furnace (metabolism) running very efficiently. How can you apply this method to your daily food consumption so you can achieve the best results? Lets assume that you normally eat around 2000 calories per day. You are going to want to fluctuate your calorie intake by 500 calories each way meaning 2000 calories will be your base. Next, and a big piece of this puzzle, is what part of your diet you will be adjusting. The answer to this is carbohydrates. You are always going to want to fluctuate your carbohydrate intake, leaving your protein and fat as consistent as possible. The last piece of the puzzle is rotation. You will want to rotate in 4-day increments:
low Cal, low Cal, high Cal, Medium Cal. example:
When your body gets used to a consistent amount of calories it becomes stagnant, which is when weight loss plateaus happen. By rotating your calories you are shocking your metabolism, thus making it work harder on a consistent basis. Apply this technique to your existing weight loss program and kiss your weight loss plateaus goodbye! Note: If you are already on an extremely low-calorie diet, you may have to adjust the amount of calories you are consuming and where your calories are coming from. Remember, as I have explained in numerous past articles, a person should NEVER consume less than 1200 calories per day.

I then got onto her massage table, fully clothed, face down. Heidi told me to close my eyes and relax. She went to work and started healing me. I could feel the tension drift away, my shoulders werent as tense. I wondered, why? Then it dawned on me! I could hear Heidi was breathing slowly and deeply, and I was following her lead. Like most of us, my breathing was shallow and rapid. I immediately felt better when I focused on my breathing and nothing else. Could it be my headache was actually drifting away? Next it was time to roll onto my back for more healing. Heidi put a crystal in each hand. I didnt know why, but I just trusted her. She later explained to me that the crystals help to open the chakras and help my energy flow better. Then I heard what I thought were bells. The sound was soothing and truly beautiful. I learned later that the sound I heard was of tuning forks, which Heidi was using to help with the energy flow. At the end of the 90-minute session (I cant believe how fast it went!), I was so relaxed! I had more energy and my headache was gone! It was amazing! When I arrived home, I felt like taking a nap, which I did. I slept soundly for about an hour and woke up with more energy than I have had in a long time. Its been one week and my migraine hasnt returned. Heidi is a certified energy healer and a certified soul coach. In addition to her healing practice, she is also a realtor with Keller Williams. hen you consider that 90% of your atoms are replaced with new ones each year and that skin cells change every 35 days, it may hit home that you are what you eat! Are you nourishing your body with what it needs? Every day you need 70 minerals, 28 vitamins, 3 essential fatty acids and 12 amino acids. Do you know what you are deficient in or need to cleanse? Natural health practitioners consult with clients to answer these questions. They can also assist clients in identifying which foods are best for each individual according to the blood type diet. Consider incorporating these natural herbs into your diet to overcome some familiar dietary problems: basil boosts your brains production of dopamine and serotonin, according to Indian researchers; this could lead to sunnier moods in as little as three days. Basil leaves are great with fresh organic tomatoes, feta cheese, mozzarella cheese, gluten-free pizza, white fish, strawberries and melons. Parsley is a natural diuretic that relieves bloating and water retention, and prevents too much salt (or the wrong kind table salt instead of sea salt) from being reabsorbed into bodily tissues.
Parsley also is a great breath deodorizer and works great in ice water to quench your thirst. Cayenne, with its fiery substance, helps eliminate inflammation. It helps with sinus congestion and pressure, along with heart health. Cayenne will also stop bleeding, is great in chili, and can be used instead of black pepper, which hurts the nerves in your back. Cayenne pepper is great on eggs, root vegetables, roasted poultry, rice, leafy greens (as in a mix with grape seed oil and sea salt) dressing. Its great with soups, fish and shrimp. Cilantro binds heavy metals, such as mercury, in the blood and carries them out of the body. Their removal reverses the toxic build-up that causes chronic fatigue, joint pain and depression. Cilantro is great fresh over greens, seafood, black beans and steak.

ew things are as important in life as our children. Whether its caring for your own child or all the children in your community, kids deserve the support they need to stay healthy and thrive. The reality today is that our childrens health is threatened by obesity, disease and other health concerns that only worsen in adulthood. Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin (GHC-SCW) believes a combination of prevention and innovation can change that. GHC-SCW providers are committed to preventive care and maintenance health care for children important investments that can last their entire life. With more than 36 years serving the Dane County community, GHC-SCW is a leader in delivering quality health care to its members.1 Understanding the importance of childhood health, GHC-SCW has made significant efforts to address these needs. As recently as 2011, GHC-SCW led the nation for well child (physical) visits in the first 15 months of life and for childhood immunizations for kids ages 2 and under. GHC-SCW pediatrician, Stephen Lo, MD, believes that this successful track record in childhood health care stems from passionate providers who want to give the best preventive care possible to all kids. And, I think were really innovative in doing that. Were always coming up with new ideas to help kids be as healthy as they can be. One of those ideas is being explored through the GHC-SCW Pediatric Weight Management Program. In July 2012, GHC-SCW launched a pilot to help overweight kids (ages 18 months to 18 years). The program brings in dietitian experts and fitness therapists, and emphasizes exercise to treat these kids at a time in their
32

life where GHC-SCW can make a big impact. This effort is especially important given that overweight children often grow into overweight adults. The goal of the program is to educate and prevent many of the health concerns associated with obesity in adults, such as heart attack, diabetes, stroke, hip problems and backaches. Other GHC-SCW investments in child health care include the Reach Out and Read program, which emphasizes early childhood literacy among kids ages 6 months to 5 years. During well child (physical) exams, GHC-SCW providers prescribe new books to kids that are both culturally appropriate (in a variety of languages) and specifically designed to assess childhood developmental stages. In the exam room, providers are able to assess literacy and fine motor skills, ultimately identifying weak areas so that kids can be more successful later on in life. GHC-SCWs commitment to childhood health also extends into the community we all share. GHC-SCW and Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) formed a collaborative partnership in the Healthy Self Program that teaches kids in our community the rewards of healthy lives. In the program, children learn about fun exercises and activities, healthy diets and portion sizes. When you choose GHC-SCW, your child has access to exceptional preventive care and innovative programs. When you have a preference, you have a choice. For more information about GHC-SCW plan offerings, visit ghcscw.com or call member services 800.605.4327.

little while ago, while attending a womens health expo, I asked a large number of women if they wanted to know how long they were going to live. I presented them with a set of questions created by a life insurance company that could be tabulated into a very accurate determination of their expected lifespan. The response surprised me. First, a significant percentage of women did not want to know the answer! Only later did I realize the full significance of that reaction. Second, almost everyone knew the questions that they scored badly on the ones that lowered their life expectancy. So, how long are we expected to live and what can we do about it? For many, the more important question is, how do we stay healthy for the rest of our lives? In the last few years, science has given us a good glimpse into the future.
division at the end of its lifespan. It appears that in a perfect world our maximum lifespan is indeed about 120 years. In fact, the oldest woman in America with a verified age lived to 122. However, that is extremely unusual; and for the rest of us, there are many other factors that affect the outcome of our age. Common sense tells us that other genetics are at play. The ages of your grandparents and parents tell a story, and your resistance to major sickness or disease, like diabetes, heart failure or cancer all has an impact.
The social science of aging, like the test mentioned above, is fairly accurate, but the body contains many more clues to reveal the secrets of aging. One of the most interesting theories came back in 1962 when a researcher named Leonard Hayflick determined that each cell has an upper limit on its ability to divide. He started with fetal cells, and after about 50 cell divisions, they wouldnt replicate anymore. This translates to 120 years for an adult and it works well with other species as well, accurately predicting the upper age of dogs and sheep and even butterflies. Scientists soon found a practical way to measure the Hayflick theory. They studied the telomere or end cap of a normal chromosome and found that each time its cell divided, the cap shortened a little bit. In fact, it shortened to almost nothing by the 50th cell
www.naturespathways.com
A lot of theories revolve around cellular damage. With excessive use or stress it is postulated that the resulting degeneration is just too much and you basically wear out your body. This translates to a number of effects on the cell itself: poor DNA division and repair; mitochondrial damage; reduced immunity; and, most importantly, cell injury, which creates an increasing amount of free radicals by oxidation. Free radicals are molecules that have an unpaired electron. This free electron is a problem. You could imagine it like this: When a cell breaks down due to injury, illness or chemicals and pollutants, it leaves an electron thats like a spark from a fireplace. That spark will injure the membrane and components of the cell next to it and start a chain reaction of destruction. Antioxidants put the fire out, making them another key to a long and healthy life.
is aging inevitable?

riftless Depot, an organic market, deli and caf, is home to conscientiously sourced, high-quality, organic, locally farmed produce, meats, fish, cheeses and dairy. It is well worth the drive to Spring Green to experience such a variety of healthy options that support a sustainable environment. We have received very positive feedback since we opened in June 2011, says Debora Morton, who owns the store. People really appreciate the fact that we make it so easy for them to pick up quality, fresh, healthy food, and that their purchases support local growers. The stores pantry is our own personal selection of tried-and-true products, she adds. Careful planning and research went into their choice of offerings. The selected items are conscientiously sourced. We know our vendors and we know how they produce goods, informs Morton. We offer certified organic whenever possible with international items we select small European artisans that use sustainable methods if they are not certified organic. Step in the store and you dont know where to start. Be it the organic produce and dairy or the local and international pantry items, youre sure to find both what youre looking for and some nice surprises. In the unlikely event that they dont have what youre looking for, they take requests! In addition to the many organic market, deli and caf items (see sidebars), they also serve several flavors of gelato, a rich, creamy Italian ice cream, which is made by

Ginger calms digestive tract spasms more effectively than motion-sickness drugs. Ginger helps alleviate nausea and stomach upsets. It is great in a summer drink mixed with organic lemons, natural cane sugar and ice for a great lemon slush drink.
Just 200 years ago the average life expectancy was 25 years! One hundred years ago it doubled to a life span of 50 years, and now its about 75 years. The actual U.S. life expectancy is 78.37 years. That sounds pretty good until you find out that according to the USA CIA statistics, our country ranks 50th in the world. Can you guess the 1st? Its Monaco, with an average of 89.73. Japan ranks 5th at 82.25 and Canada ranks 12th at 81.28. Obviously, socio-economic and environmental factors play a huge role in how long we live. But there is also promise in a surprising discovery that may ultimately lead to life expectancy even beyond the 120-year limit. Cancer researchers studying the Hayflick theory found that the cancer cells are an exception to the rule. They produce an enzyme called telomerase that actually lengthens the telomere cap! The cells kept dividing and dividing past the 50-times limit. Some evidence suggests that they never stop living. Thats the bad news. The good news is that we may be able to produce our own telomerase by manipulating the gene sequence. Boosting the telomere length in the immune cells may someday be used to fight cancer and help us live longer. Another study involves carnosine (not carnitine, the nutritional supplement already used by body builders). Amazingly enough, carnosine, which is made in our bodies, can increase the amount of cell divisions and reduce the rate of telomere shortening.

Dill, according to what Indian scientists have found, works as well as prescription antibiotics at killing harmful intestinal bacteria such as E. coli. It helps with an upset gastrointestinal tract. Dill is used not only in making cucumbers/pickles, but also is great with salmon, eggs, chicken, cheese, mixed greens, clear soups, goat cheese, beets and carrots. If more people would use what our Creator put out there, take their own health by the horns and educate themselves for better options, we would not have so many weary people suffering side effects from drugs. Dont forget to use your peppermint essential oil in water for digestive help. Add it to your body lotion and apply in a spray bottle to cool off your body.

It may be wonderful to live longer, but given a choice, most people would choose health first. Just like my survey at the womens health expo, a lot of people are afraid of the future. Aging, to many, means loss of income and choice, restricted activity, physical suffering and need for constant care. The real issue boils down to living without pain and disease to maintain a happy lifestyle. Paradoxically, everyone taking the survey knew exactly what lifestyle changes they needed to make to insure better health now and in the future, and their fear came directly from that knowledge! The group that was the most comfortable about aging included those who felt they were in control of doing something constructive about their weak areas. Even those who scored poorly (a lower life expectancy), who were actively engaged in improving their health, were not fearful. It seems from my small survey that trying to be healthy makes you happier about the future. It also may be a self-fulfilling prophecy, as science tells us that how long your life will be, is also tied to how much illness you have as you age. Until we have a magic bullet, staying healthy and reducing the effects of aging is certainly the real key to a long and happy life. In my next article, The Aging Revolution, I will discuss the traditional methods for staying healthy, including diet and exercise, as well as the new generation of hormone therapy that is sure to be part of our regular tune-up.

Beneficial insects that mean business! .................................................................
by Tina Lupiezowiec
ho hasnt heard the pained cry, Japanese beetles, aphids and cutworms oh my! Typical scenario: The average Jane or Joe predictably darts to a superstore or nursery to buy some chemical nightmare that promises to eradicate these dastardly bugs! They cant get home quick enough to spray or dust the offenders into oblivion. Later, triumphant, they will praise the virtues of the weapon they wielded. After all, chemical pesticides did the job they promised to do and are still legal. (Its not like were in Canada after all!) And, anyway, those cursed little beasts from the bowls of hell are wreaking havoc on innocent gardeners plants and fruit. Die! Die! they justly cry. The alternative response: Other folks, such as tree-huggers, entomologists, concerned parents and pet owners are also, make no mistake about it, chanting, Die! Die! They, however, might be inclined to experiment with a process thats a little less terrifying and definitely more fun than poisoning everything in their gardens, including themselves! These gentler or more adventurous souls could learn how to attract little buddies into their ecosystems, or quicker still, introduce these useful critters themselves to rid their space of its unwelcome pestilence. Little buddies are beneficial insects whose purpose on this planet is glorious,

as well as spine-chilling, depending on how you look at it. Beneficial insects eat, confound and/or lay their eggs in the larva of other bug menaces, and in so doing, wipe them out! In other words, they come, they help, and, given a place to crash, they stick around and keep on helping. The author of this article is very fond of her little buddies and endorses their use wholeheartedly. The following list contains but a few of the many beneficial insects that are welcome visitors and great tenants to any garden or green space, large or small. beneficial nematodes: Not all nematodes are little buddies, but parasitic nematodes (Steinernema feltiae, S. carpocapsae, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, H. marilatus, H. indica,) are LOVED by owners of green spaces and gardeners alike, because they attack and kill soil-dwelling garden pests. Parasitic nematodes are teeny tiny, microscopic, unsegmented roundworms that you would not want to go toe-to-toe with in the ring They are fierce predators! Nematodes can be ordered online or through some garden centers and, suspended in water, can be dispersed easily via a watering can, a pump sprayer or a hose-end sprayer. NOTE: H. bacteriophora attack Japanese beetle larva! Green lacewings (Chrysoperia carnea) Dont let their dainty adult form fool you; green lacewings arent called the aphid lions for nothing! n a fireplace showroom where wood stoves blaze, its easy to get dazzled by the artful beauty of a particular stove. However, while loving the stoves clean lines and form is essential, you should also consider the environment and follow current green criteria. Because buying a wood stove is much like buying furniture, you will find a wide-choice of models that match every lifestyle and design interest, including antique, traditional, classic or modern. While evaluating the right size, heating capacity and look of your future wood stove, we recommend that you also follow these five eco-wise tips: Only evaluate approved wood stoves equipped with a noncatalytic combustion system that exceeds EPA standards and are currently tax credit qualified. Look for an eco-friendly seal and a recycled ingredients label that lists the many ways that a stove manufacturer has gone the extra mile to produce the highest quality and most energy efficient wood stove possible. Similar to grocery shopping, seek out the equivalent of an organic section in your local fireplace store to compare ecowise content among the preferred green-savvy stoves. Download educational videos that demonstrate how to fully realize the renewable benefits of local wood energy, without beginner missteps or old-school methods. There are five free videos that teach how to choose, install, operate, maintain, and fuel your wood stove that are available on http://www. morsona.com, Facebook, and YouTube. Review stove manufacturers literature and web sites to learn more about the companys recycling, clean-burning technology and company-wide conservation practices. Also, if you have owned a wood stove for quite some time, you should compare your stoves performance and compliance in terms of todays EPA standards or even stricter Washington State requirements. A 10-year-old or older stove might not measure up, which means its time to invest in a new high-performance wood stove. This simple change can minimize your carbon footprint, reduce fossil fuel
use, lower your heating costs and even enhance your home value. Additionally, if living by green principles is important to you and it should be you may want to seek out an experienced fireplace professional to help you evaluate the overall stove construction, components, and materials that differentiate the many wood

reat friends, great conversation, great atmosphere, and great food and drinks make for a great start to a weekend. I met friends at Jacs Dining & Tap House one Friday late-afternoon and we had a wonderful experience: Jacs is located on Monroe St., just down the road from Edgewood College. The area is booming and Jacs is a big part of that. Seating is available at the bar or in the dining area. It has a relaxed atmosphere that has a
local flavor and feel, which extend to the menu, and which is why we decided to pop in. Our server was prompt, courteous and friendly. It was Photo by Lukas Keapproth Photo by Rebecca Mergen obvious she enjoyed what she was doing. She gave us two differ- she missed having a cold beer on a summer ent menus, food and drink. baked with brown sugar and served on top of spinach salad. They were sweet and salty at the same time delicious! We also had to try a bowl of the squash soup, which was light and creamy. Another hit at our table! What to order for our main course? Our server suggested that we try one of the flatbreads, another specialty of Jacs. Of the four to choose from, we picked the peach and prosciutto, a flatbread topped with peach jam, Brie, caramelized Vidalia onions, prosciutto, arugula and walnuts. It, too, was delicious. Whenever possible, the Vidalia onions and lettuce come from local suppliers. It was fresh and filling at the same time. How can you go to Jacs and not have one of their famous sandwiches? Jacs has 3 different vegetarian sandwiches to choose from, which we were tempted by; however, we went the traditional burger route. The Jacs burger is far from ordinary. It is made with ground beef from Pecatonica Valley Farms, which is located in Hollandale, about 40 miles southwest of Madison. The burger was juicy and cooked to perfection. It was served on a ciabatta roll, topped with Wisconsin Cheddar, romaine lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions and their classic aioli sauce. The burger was huge, perfect for two to split. When our server came by and asked if we wanted dessert, we looked at each other and said, Why not? even though we were full! While they all looked delicious, we tried the flourless chocolate cake. It is gluten-free and will satisfy anyones chocolate desires. Since it was flourless it was heavy and very filling. Topped with a mint crme Chantilly sauce and fresh strawberries, it was a wonderful way to top off a delicious meal. Jacs has evening specials every night of the week, including two-for-one Jacs burgers on Tuesday nights. They have selections for everyone, and whether you want gluten-free, vegetarian or American fare, you wont be disappointed.

Theyre pretty, red and theyve got dots. While their dots are fun for us to see, their appetite is anything but fun for its prey! These little darlings can gobble up to as many as 60 aphids a day.
