Governance and Development Innovations Leadership Training Programme Empowering Graduates for Transformative Leadership in Public Service, Civil Society and Business Introduction Confronting the governance and human development challenges in Uganda requires long term-multi-sector innovative approaches to tackle corruption and empower citizens economically and socially to enable them live a dignified life. The youth are of our great interest, given the rate and level of unemployment. The real issue to be addressed now is empowering citizens to engage the state and equipping young leaders to be innovativetransformative so as to generate new innovations for self and community development and reduce the current levels of unemployment and dependence syndrome, hence human development. Our target group at the start is the young professionals in universities. We will later stretch to development workers, civil society leaders, and governance and civil service officials. Why attend the training With todays unemployment levels, graduates need to be innovative and enterprising for self employment. Secondly, with the growing concern and need for integrity for best corporate image; it is becoming a special compulsory requirement for employment in government and business sector. The training gives successful consistent participants comparative and competitive advantage for private and public employment. Vision: A generation of transformative leaders and job makers Mission Inspiring a new generation of transformative leaders in governance sector, and empowering a breed of job makers in business sector for youth employment and prosperity Goal: Grooming young leaders of integrity and empowering them to be innovative and enhance their practical skills for personal and professional performance Training Objectives: 1. Instill additional professional and moral values in leaders of public and private sector institutions including graduates as agents of change for transformative leadership; 2. Build practical capacity of university graduates to translate class knowledge into practical projects/products; 3. Empower and mentor young professionals to generate successful legal business enterprises for self employment; During the next five years, AFRICAF will embark on training young leaders and other special interest groups from development organisations, Civil Society and Government, aiming at development innovations and encouraging integrity and good governance in the following strategic themes: Theme 1: Career Development and Self Empowerment; Relevant Innovative Academic and Social-Economic Skills The current unemployment in rate in Uganda is worrying most graduates and this frustrates their hopes after their studies. This is partly because; the education system in Uganda does not prepare its beneficiaries to cope with the ever changing and growing world challenges after their academic tenure. Students concentrate more on acquisition of theoretical knowledge and miss out the applied knowledge that is more important in the world outside school. To a certain extent, the type of education they receive does not ignite them to be creative. Yet, to another extent, career choice also contributes to either success or failure of graduates. It may also be true if one

argued that, ignorance on how to maximize the utility of the theoretical knowledge during school time and make it act as a point of attraction during the job search is what results into all the challenges faced in the job market. It is against this background therefore that Africa Challenge Foundation (AFRICAF) has designed a unique curriculum to help the prospected graduates counter these challenges, and become a point of attention whenever they will ever step after their academic term. This curriculum covers a number of the most sensitive topics that launch graduates to explore the skies of success during and after their studies. They rotate around career choice and development and self empowerment in both academic and social economic dimensions; and around governance and leadership. Opportunity windows and Services offered: Personal and Group Mentoring for Leadership and Development Business Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Mentorship and Training Peer-to-peer investment and employment innovations Savings and credit services for financial empowerment Volunteer opportunities for personal and professional career growth Internship placement opportunities for further career development and exposure Possible opportunities for seminars, conferences professional trainings Theme 2: Modern Governance and Accountability Leadership Innovations; The greatest challenge of our time is of governance and leadership vacuum. The underlying factual causes of corruption that perpetuates underdevelopment are those that are harbored in either broken and un-functional governance systems and the general lack of good will to do good among the public servants, political leaders and those in major policy and decision making positions. Good governance and access to justice and rule of law cannot be reached without answering the question of leadership for change. Through the governance and Leadership Innovation Trainings, we hope to put to the labour market a new breed of leaders for a new Uganda and Africa.
