Venous blood—Determination of
lead content—Flame atomic
absorption spectrometric method
This Australian Standard was prepared by Committee CH/6, Analysis of Body Fluids
for Metals Content. It was approved on behalf of the Council of Standards Australia
on 19 April 1993 and published on 14 June 1993.
Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australian Standards and related publi cati ons wil l be found in the Standards Australi a
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editi ons
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Analysis of Body Fluids for
Metals Content, under the direction of the Multitechnics Standards Policy Board, to supersede
AS 2411—1980, Determination of lead in venous blood (flame atomic absorption spectrometric
method).
The Committee organized an inter-laboratory test program to obtain information on the repeatability
and reproducibility of the method. The following laboratories participated in the test program to
provide the data given in Tables 2, 3, A2 and A3:
Department of Health, New South Wales
Hampson and Associates
Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science
Mount Isa Mines
Pasminco Metals - BHAS
Pasminco Metals - EZ

Venous blood—Determination of lead content—
Flame atomic absorption spectrometric method
1 SCOPE This Standard sets out a flame atomic absorption spectrometric method for the
determination of lead in venous blood. The method is suitable for whole blood with lead
content in the range 1.0 µmol/L to 6.0 µmol/L. Precautions shall be taken to prevent
coagulation or clots from forming in the sample. The sample shall be preserved, prior to
analysis, under the recommended conditions (see Clause 6). Where it is anticipated that the
lead content will be less than 1.5 µmol/L, the procedure outlined in Appendix A is
recommended.
This is a free 5 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.
The procedure for sampling blood for the determination of lead is given in AS 2636.
AS
2134 Recommended practice for chemical analysis by atomic absorption spectrometry
2134.1 Part 1: Flame atomic absorption spectrometry
2636 Sampling of venous and capillary blood for the determination of lead or cadmium
concentration
4 REAGENTS
4.1 General requirements All reagents shall be of analytical grade and distilled or
deionized water shall be used throughout. The reagents and the water shall be shown to
contain a lead concentration of less than 0.1 µmol/L.
Warning: The reagents and solutions used in this method may constitute a health hazard and due
care should be taken in their handling.
