District Governor Phil Armstrongs Message for July 2012 Firstly let me welcome you to the new Rotary Year. Also I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the great honour you have given me to serve as the District Governor for 2012-13. I look forward to working with you all so that we can continue to make a difference in the world. Rotary International President for 2012-13, Sakuji Tanaka has given us the theme of Peace Through Service and how well does that blend with Rotarys motto of Service Above Self. Rotary Clubs and Rotarians have been carrying out service projects locally, nationally and internationally for many years and it is amazing how those service projects can change peoples lives by giving stability, independence and self belief. The provision of safe drinking water, improved sanitation, health support, education and food security can provide an environment where peace becomes an option for people. It is easy to see why these areas are included in the Foundations Six Areas of Focus. So while our theme for this year is Peace Through Service, in reality we have been practising this for many years. This year gives us the opportunity to remain focussed on Service which is one of the many things that Rotary is very good at. From a District level my goals for the year start with our charity the Rotary Foundation. Obviously for me to achieve this goal, I am totally dependent on Members and Clubs. Within the Foundation I want to promote Every Rotarian Every Year. I understand that there are many worthwhile causes for you to donate your money to (the organisation that I work for is a charity) and I encourage you to still support those causes. All I ask is that you consider seriously the Foundation as part of your charity giving - $1 per week totals $52 per year and $2 per week totals $104 per year. Just think if we could get every Rotarian in our District to personally give $2 per week to the Foundation, our total would be close to $150,000. If we then add $1,000 from each Club and then additional personal donations from our Paul Harris Society Members we exceed $200,000 from District 9710 very quickly. If I am going to encourage you to donate to the Foundation you need to have good reasons other than the fact that it is Rotarys charity: We know where the money is spent and we know that all of the money that we donate is spent on the Foundations projects and programs. Administration costs are covered by investing your donations for three years the income earned from those investments covers the costs of administration and then the money is released for use. Polio is not yet eliminated we may be 99% there but the remaining 1% may well be the toughest and the most expensive. We need more money to finish the job.

The money that this District donates to the Foundation sets the amount that is returned to the District in the future for Clubs to utilise on projects. So if District donations reduce, so does the amount of money that will be available to District Clubs conversely if District donations increase, so does the amount available. This is a great incentive to donate to the Foundation and of course it is tax deductable.

More District Goals in the future. Once again, thank you for the opportunity and honour of serving as District Governor for 2012-13. Kim and I look forward to meeting as many of you as we can over the next twelve months and thank you for your efforts in making a difference in the world while we work towards Peace Through Service. Phil

Renal Unit We are now looking for donations of the following items for the Queanbeyan Renal Unit
kids colouring in books pencils/textas/crayons plastic toys (eg blocks, trucks) that can be easily washed.

These are so that a small toy box can be established in the waiting room.

If you can help with these please contact Natalie Jupe. Friendship Beyond Club Functions (FBCF) You might have noticed a few FBCF events listed in our calendar in the upcoming months. This was an idea discussed at the President Elect training earlier this year. It is purely a chance for Rotarians, friends and family to have a social outing of some kind (other than socializing at club functions). Our first two FBCF events are a trip to the movies in August, and a Coffee & Cake morning tea in October. We will see how these first two go, and if successful we will try to have a FBCF event ever few months. If you have any suggestions for what types of outings we should host, please let us know.

My name is John Sokol. I am the incoming president for Kankakee, IL USA District 6450. To date, ONLY ONE PERSON HAS RESPONDED TO MY REQUEST. I am still reaching out to the 1.2 million Rotarians around the world to start an AUTISM AWARENESS ROTARIAN ACTION GROUP. Over 46 million people in the world have some level of autism. Has Autism touched your life in one way or another? Is it a family member or friend, maybe a student? Please contact me today @ RotariansforAutism@gmail.com. I need 25 perspective individual members from 5 countries and 3 zones to get the Rotarian Action Group started. Please share this, thanks in advance! Many of the clubs we are reaching out to already have projects that support autism in one way or another. This is a great opportunity for us to unite our efforts. I personally am a firefighter that volunteers my time working with children with autism teaching them safety in their everyday lives. I also work with their caregivers and train first responders on how to interact with individuals with autism in an emergency situation. Our club help found the Ember911 Safety Education Program @www.Ember911.com. This is a child safety program with a focus on children with autism.
