SCHOOL OF EDUCATION LESSON PLAN (All school experiences other than Internship) LESSON ORGANISATION Lesson 1 Year Level:

: 3 (Stage two) Time: 11:00am- 12:00pm Date: 29/04/2011 Key Learning Area: Mathematics Students Prior Knowledge: Students have had learning experiences with two-dimensional shapes comprehensively in Stage one and earlier in the year. Students also have had learning experiences with 3D shapes in Stage one (cones, cubes, cylinders, spheres and prisms). Students re-addressed these shapes last lesson, and looked at pyramids, a new 3D shape to students. They are familiar with their names and properties (face, corner, edge, side). Students are familiar with column graphs from Stage one and have gathered and displayed data using graphs. Lesson Topic: Strand: Space and Geometry Sub-Strand: Three dimensional (3D) Shapes

Learning Sequence:

Provision for Learner Diversity/Educational Risk: All students within 3M are English Second Language Learners; therefore there are ranges of diverse learning styles. Sila, Charla, Sione and Farheen are STLA students. These students will be grouped with more able students for creating a their 3D shapes out of nets. **Zawad is ESL Phase one learner. He is currently waiting to be assessed by the hospital for possible autism. Zawad will not complete the Forms worksheet, however will complete the extension activity.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Syllabus Outcomes (point form) SGS2.1: Makes, compares, describes and names three dimensional objects including pyramids and represents them in drawings Describes the features of prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres Identifies prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres Makes models of three dimensional objects Making and visualising the cut face, when the three-dimensional objects receives a straight cut Identifies lines of symmetry in three-dimensional shapes Working Mathematically
describe three-dimensional objects using everyday language and mathematical terminology (Communicating) recognise and describe the use of three-dimensional objects in a variety of contexts eg buildings, packaging (Reflecting, Communicating) WMS2.5 Links mathematical ideas and makes connections with, and generalisations about, existing knowledge and understanding in relation to Stage 2 content

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson) Assessment of Lesson Outcomes and suggestions for improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

[OFFICIAL USE ONLY] Comments by classroom teacher, HOPP, supervisor:

LESSON PROGRESSION (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant) Time Motivation/Introduction: To begin the lesson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9L9l86N-xM "Here are the 3D shapes that I know... I sphere, cylinder, cube and a cone." Shows real life examples. Fun catchy song for the children to sing along to . Eg, baseball, earth, and a marble. Sorting and classifying. Mystery Bag, sort into cube, sphere, cone Long list of all they can think ofPlay dough --> Making shapes, symmetry -Paint the play dough - shape stamps - art craft Guess, draw, do, answer.
