ANTHRO PAPER 1) GENERAL HISTORY Touch screen cell phone with unlimited texting, no internet access Concept been

n around for decades First call was made in 1973, made by Motorola-1st to create HANDHELD phone for use Didnt become common until 1990s CAUSES OF INNOVATION =Pressures that exist (within a society or external to it) that provide the stimulus for change. One of the primary causes of innovation are humans primary needs (Food, shelter, clothing, etc.)o cell phone enables quick responses to orders of food, shelter,clothing-enables faster responses to trade to get primary needs Another cause of invention is humans secondary needs, which are needs we create when our primary needs have been met o Once primary needs are given to us faster, more time is able to be spent specializing, or in todays society, following our interests. Cell phones enable people to quickly receive information, instruction, about these secondary needs Changes in the physical or social environments can cause subsequent changes in societies o Changes in the social environments were created by cell phones allowing people to be in almost constant contact with their family, friends and peers, creating a network of people knowing where people are, what they are doing and led to a more connected society FORCES OF CONTINUITY THAT OPPOSED IT =features of a society that act to preserve much of the existing information and structure of a society. o When existing practices ensure standardized behavior, they will tend to be preserved. o Many people saw cell phones as a infiltration of privacy, not having the ability to get away, same with texting o Many saw cell phones as excessive o Many saw cell texting as impersonal, a brusque way of getting what you want without having to actually take the time and write a proper letter socialization process is self-reinforcing and can maintain cultural features.

o Cell phones threw away the normal socialization process by enabling people to gather info quicker, wherever they went, and to always be connected to someone, to never feel alone o Some may have seen the cell phone and subsequent texting as a wrecker of culture of actual conversations, which produce close ties with those talking Vested Interests. Whenever change is likely to affect the amount and distribution of valued goods (such as wealth and power), those who benefit from the current distribution are likely to use their positions of privilege to resist such change o Home phone companies were no longer needed o Paper companies- letter paper was not needed nearly as much due to increased ability to be in contact with friends and family LIFE PATTERNED AROUND CELL PHONE Family o Use texting to ask dad and mom personal opinions, when sibs sports games are, how they areo Call grandmother to check in o Text cousins, sibs to socialize Friends o Use texting to organize when our schedules allow us to hang out o Use texting to get in contact to schedule rides or meeting times o Use texting and cell phone as a source of socialization Work o Use cell phone to call customers to schedule times for lessons o Use cell phone to discuss info with customers o Use cell phone to assist any interested customers o Use cell phone to discuss schedule and work with Boss 2) DISCUSSION Daily activites o Had to wear a watch at all times o Had to use an alarm clock instead of phone o Had to write down times and reminders in calendar instead of phone o Had to use email a lot more, had to send out my email to all customers, had to leave notes for my boss on desk instead of calling/texting her SUBSTITUTES o Used computer to send most communications, Emails, facebook o Used calendar to keep track of schedule of work and school

3)

o Used alarm clock to wake up at correct time, instead of phone alarm MOST REWARDING o The knowledge that I was completely unreachable unless I had my computer Gave me a sense of peace, to be left alone o Knowing that I could simply glance down at my watch instead of my phone, then getting distracted by the odd missed call or text message or voicemail o Enabled me to be much more concentrated on schoolwork, and my job, and the fact that I was on my own time because no one could tell me otherwise o Simplified my life MOST CHALLENGING o The sheer amount of work it took to contact all my customers who usually contact me via cell phone- eg. Had to email them o The disability to easily make plans then and their with friends, family or clients, had to wait to get to a computer and fb or email them o The disadvantage of being able to socialize with people when something funny, sad, or serious happened as means of comfort

THEORIES APPLIED MCDONALDIZATON o Efficiency- cell phones allow people to quickly contact another that has something they want, whether its info, a time or place to meet and exchange supplies, or just socialization, cell phones allow the two parties to be instantly gratified, so that progress can keep growing Not having cell phone made me lose time while trying to contact customers and friends and fam, made me less efficient at school due to alarm not going off o Quantified and calculated- cell phones enable the users to easily contact more and more people, while spending a minimal amount of time and money doing it, as compared to writing letters and procuring the paper, ink and stamps needed I could not reach many people due to the amount of time and work it took to send emails to every single one o Predictability- cell phones enable the users to know, and be assured, that they will get in contact with whoever they need, even if they miss a call, they can leave a message detailing the info they wanted to deliver. Ensures that each socialization movement is actually transmitted

I could not be completely sure that people had checked their emails, or gotten my notes o Control- Cell phones cut out the middleman of human couriers of letters, and enable to cell phone user to use their cell phone at places not near the home phone. E.g mall, random road. Allow people to never be truly alone, always will have some help I could not be reached to reschedule a conflict unless I had my computer and was checking my email led to me not knowing a lesson was not comingdrove out to pool , no one showed had no control of the ability to adapt as quickly as needed in our face-paced society, TECH. CHANGES IN WORKPLACE o oVolti takes the overall stance that technological innovation has the capacity to both create and eliminate jobs o While it increases production, technological advance has resulted in jobs lost I have my own cell phone, so I can schedule my own times for lessons, so I dont need a person to do my make my schedule for me The bulk of job creation is now in the supply of services rather than in manufacturing, construction, and raw material extraction- cell phones enable me to provide my services to customers quickly experience demonstrated about the role of technology in your life in general o I need a cell phone to be able to keep up with cultural expectations of adaptation to others schedule changes o I need a cell phone to organize and schedule my agenda efficiently so that time is not wasted o Need a cell phone to socialize- not that many people enjoy constant contact through facebook and email messages experience shown about the role of this particular technology in society as a Whole o Cell phones enable people to be in constant contact with their peers, business partners and families- good thing due to extreme expectations of society o Cell phones tend to help adapt the this facepaced society lifestyle, but also encourage it to become faster paced No cell phone- no way of reaching you-no way to increase your responsibilities to others You decide what you need to do and when would be best to do it on your own time without any outside influences constantly putting in their opinions
