Letters to the Editor

Dear Ms Rivers, I really enjoy every issue of Geechee One Magazine. Every issue seems to be full interviews and articles that I can relate to. Keep up the good work. Lauren Simms Dear Editor, Thanks for showcasing some of the underground voices in SC. There isnt as many outlets that can say they are actually opening doors for the artists in SC. Geechee One is doing the damn thing. You guys need to keep doing beauty of the month. the last one I saw was ok. Diamond Mack was the best beauty you guys had in awhile. I know its hard to find pretty females in Charleston, so I applaud you guys in your attempt. Brian I normally dont write in to magazines but I had to let you know how I feel about doing the Breast Cancer Sucks issue. I almost cried after seeing the cover. So many young people should be aware of these issues. I hope Winter, reads this and she keeps on spreading positivity through her artwork. S.S. Thank you all for voting for last month short shorts contest. The winner is Brittney Bennett from Columbia, S.C. She wins $50

For those who forgot, this year is another Presidential election year. Are you prepared to go get out and vote?? Here is one of the organization designed to help you this year: Get Out the Vote. So what is GOTV and how can I get involved? Get Out The Vote, or GOTV, as it is commonly called, is the culmination of any organizing campaign. Both electoral campaigns and issue driven campaigns plan GOTV efforts to ensure that their supporters get to the polls on Election Day. GOTV is also the most exciting and energetic part of a campaign when volunteers come out in force, the public is watching and we're just days away from victory! Get Out The Vote begins in force the weekend before the election and lasts until the polls close on Election Day. In many states, campaigns and organizations have weekend door knocks to remind people to vote on Tuesday, but GOTV efforts usually culminate in massive "day of" operations to get people to the polls. Some of these efforts include, door knocking in low voter turn-out areas, volunteer phone calls reminding people to vote, mailings, door hangers, visibility, rallies, special speakers, the possibilities are endless! The non-profit community is also a great way to get involved in GOTV efforts. Many non-profits work to encourage and strengthen civic participation through non-partisan organizing efforts to educate new or infrequent voters on their rights and get them to polls on Election Day. All of these activities, whether part of an issue or electoral campaign, or by a non-profit organization need volunteers. There are so many ways you can help, from volunteering for a national effort to sending an email to your friends. In this Organizing Corner, we've come up with five easy ways you can get involved and we've put in links to national and local efforts, including Wellstone Action's GOTV program in Minnesota. So find a volunteer opportunity that works for you, and help Get Out The Vote in your community! Come out to the 2012 Geechee One Awards and meet Hip-Hop Politician Tez Figaro from Orlando, FL for more info.

There are a lot of worthy causes in the world. More than can possibly be listed, and every one of them serious and important and potentially lifealtering. And we all have a limited amount of time and energy to dedicate to our causes and beliefs and battles, so we cant all contribute to everything. Working towards a positive, peaceful, accepting body image may seem like such an insignificant goal, comparatively speaking. But heres why I think that cultivating positive body image matters.

body type or shape will unlock happiness, and that we should do everything in our power to achieve those things. Because there are forces and industries that benefit when we hate our bodies. Because we should fight against anything that tells us we must conform or live in misery, that if we dont conform we should hate ourselves. And hating ourselves includes hating our bodies. Our bodies are integral to our selves. Because happiness is difficult in so many ways, and becomes even more so if we lunge at it from a place of self-loathing. Because understanding ourselves, loving others, and changing the world can seem utterly impossible if we linger in a place of self-loathing. Because many of the most rewarding experiences in life feel just beyond reach when we hate ourselves. And hating ourselves includes hating our bodies. Our bodies are integral to our selves.

People kept pushing me to keep doing the music, especially since I was the hype man for him. What projects do you currently have out? My current project is a mixtape on Coast to Coast titled "Too Hard". When someone picks up your mixtape what type of impression would you like to leave?

That I'm not a rapper stuck in one box. Thats what messed up about the game. My biggest influence was 2pac. He could make seventeen kinds of songs for everybody. Also I have major features from Bohagon and Blood Raw of CTE on the mixtape as well. What are you doing to keep your buzz up? Im making moves in other parts of S.C.: Im trying to branch out. Right now Im even working on this "Dope Man Murder City Remix) with Fatboy from Charleston. How did you get the connect to the artist Fatboy? Through my manager, Tyron Andrews, which was recently dealing with cats like Pachino Dino and Crane. I started listening to Fatboy and I was digging his music. I instantly became a fan. I am also working with 44Waters out of Anderson, S.C. Any upcoming shows? Im just playing by ear. I have a show every week somewhere. They always hit me at the last minute

Greenwood, is a small city. We are #1 state for crime rate and #1 for murder rate. It seems like the police cant figure out who is killing everybody. When you are selling dope they know everything. From your mama house, your cousin house , to even the girl you creeping with, but when it comes to the murders they dont know nothing.

My church was one mile away from the crack house. I would see crack heads go get saved and come back and do the same thing. How do you plan to change the image? I just want to expose the world to what I grew up from. The Soul and the Struggle. You cant do nothing without God. What are you doing in your community? Im focusing at trying to calm the violence. There has been a lot of beef from one side to the other side of Greenwood. So I will be performing August 6 at a Stop the Violence convention in Greenwood. Do you feel your music influences violence either good or bad? My music has a big buzz around here because I am actually talking about whats going on. I dont influence anybody to do anything. All the way from Greenwood, South Carolina, Money Green Music is another label making a making a major buzz in the Carolinas. Behind any good label is the CEO that keeps the business on point. Money Green Music CEO, Madoff Da Boss, started the label to keep the memory of his cousin who was a rapper that died. When asked what made him come up with the label name, he said, "There is no other true statement. All money that counts is green. Most people die by dollars. You can't change the color, it was green before we got here." "I'm a street dude and I love counting money and making good music." Madoff Da Boss What is different from when the label first started in 2009 to now in 2012?We are now in the grinding process. A lot of people know our music. My dog Money and I both dropped a album and a mixtape. We have people reciting our music and I suggest the whole world does the same.

ness like a real stand up G. What has your label done to give back to the community? Due to the high crime rate, for the last two years we used to do Monday Green Sundays, we fell back due to the violence in Greenwood. When is your next scheduled event? Our next event is February 8, 2013. It's a R.I.P. event I'm doing for my cousin. We plan to bring the kids out during the day time, and at night we go HAM in the club. Any videos where the readers can check you out on Youtube? We just did a new video called "We the Best". Look it up under mgm1000 on Youtube. Everybody always says that they are the best. What makes your label the best? We are just coming from nothing. That would define the best. When you take nothing and turn it in something. Most cities have plugs that tunes in to their music. We started our own plugs. We have our own management, our own security, our own rappers. There is not a lot of rappers that can go to another state and do a paid show off word of mouth like us. What are some of the labels main accomplishments? First Buddy Boi mixtape, "Too Hard", came out on 11.11.11 That established street creditably. A lot of people say they can rap and they really can't rap. The mixtape showed the world that he could rap. It also featured all of us on it. ALBUM/MIXTAPE REVIEWS BY DUBB SLIMM

Skinnie Gray Long Bread: Hosted by DJ Chuck T -Already Hollywood
This mixtape is a look into the life of Mr Longbread. From tracks like Bandz, that attest to Skinnie Grays lust for the green stuff, as well as Kokaine and Loud Pack, you know what life is like in Mr. Longbreads neck of the woods. Another standout is the lady themed, and dancefloor friendly, Girlfriend, ft. Chuck Town's own Mr. R&B, Suge tha Nasty Boy, this mixtape is sure to please Skinnies current fans, and earn himself a few more with his poignant tales of the life of a Southern Gentleman. There's no need for a book or movie deal, because Longbread proves with this release that he is... Already Hollywood. Be sure to check out these and other jams, and rock out with Skinny Gray this summer. -Dubb Slimm {Rated 4 out of 5 on the Digi-o-meter !!!}

Mr Fool Up: Hosted by DJ Kub- Split Personality

Mr Fool Up, as well as a zany cast of personalities, round out this latest release from Mr. Fool Up. This mixtape is a hilarious look at the life and times of Mr. Fool Up. The concept for the mixtape was a fresh approach to the mixtape project. Not one to follow, Mr. Fool Up leads the way with a comedic spin to the hectic trials in the life of Mr. Fool Up. I had the pleasure of catching up with Jro Beatman Harris, at Str8 Drop Studios, as he was putting the finishing touches on this release, and believe me when I say, you are sure to enjoy this one. With a radio show theme, Fool Up takes the listener on a journey through the mind of Mr. Fool Up, a humorous trip that will have your head nodding, and your funny bone flicked. This one is a MUST have. -Dubb Slimm
