Stephanie Conine 1st Grade-Subtraction Lesson Plan Smart Board Integration

I.

Introduction and Setting the Context A. The grade level and ability of students in class including special needs are equivalent to the requirements of 1st grade. Two students in the class maintain English as a second language and I will need to provide accommodations for these students noted in Modifications and Accommodations below. B. The elementary school is located in downtown Norman, Oklahoma and instructs approximately 450 students. The class consists of approximately 20-23 students approximately 6-7 years of age. A combination of female and male students of mixed ethnic backgrounds to include Asian, African American, Hispanic, White and American Indian. C. The context of the lesson will be an assessment for students understanding of the unit that pertains to subtraction up to 10. D. The proposed outcome the student will be able to identify proper subtraction operations with the assistance of a number line

Objectives and Standards A. PASS Objective and Standards 1. Mathematics 2.2A a. Number Operations: Develop and apply the concepts of additions and subtraction. i. Use models to construct addition and subtraction facts with sums up to twenty (e.g. counters, cubes). ii. Perform addition joining two sets of objects and subtractions by separating and by comparing sets of objects.

iii. Demonstrate fluency (i.e. memorize and apply) with basic addition facts to make a maximum sum of 10 and the associated subtraction facts (e.g. 7 +3 =10 and 10-3=7).

B. Common Core State Standards 1. Operations and Algebraic 1.0 A, College and Career Readiness (CCR) Anchor Standard 1: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. a. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions, e.g. by using objects, drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. b. Solve word problems that call for addition and subtraction of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

III.

Materials

A. The SmartBoard, teacher and student will interact with problems presented during the lesson plan. Each student will have a number line at their desk so that they can follow along. B. Subtraction Worksheet will be handed out to each student at the end of the Smart board interactive lesson; questions will be answered by each student independently and handed back for grading at the end of class.

IV.

Procedures and Assessments A. Pre-assessment: Activate students knowledge regarding numbers 1-20 by counting out loud as a group. (5 minutes) B. Establish with the students at the beginning of class what will be discussing and required for class pertaining to assigned assignment. Student will be identifying

different forms of numbered operation used in addition and subtraction.(5 Minutes) C. Describe to the students and remind them of previous assignments of numbered operations that we have done in class. (5 minutes) D. While teaching the interactive Smartboard less I will pass at certain points to call on students to write the correct answer on the Smartboard. (20 minutes) E. To monitor students questions, discussion questions during lesson will be addressed additionally with identification of numbered operations. F. Post-assessment: Students will be required to complete a worksheet that includes approximately 20 subtraction questions and turned in at the end of class. The student will be able to complete at least 17 out of 20 correct or better. (25-30 Minutes) G. If student finishes early they are allowed to color the leprechaun quietly at their desk.

V.

Modifications and Accommodations

A. Out loud reading and class discussion questions coupled with visual aids will be utilized to accommodate students who are identified with English as a second language.
