AP Chemistry Syllabus

Ms. Alison Begley Pioneer Jr-Sr High School CLASSIFICATION PREREQUISITES COURSE DESCRIPTION Advanced Placement Chemistry Chemistry 1, Algebra 1 & 2 Advanced Placement Chemistry (L) is a course that follows the College Boards Advanced Placement course outline. The course is intended for the students who are planning on pursuing a career in a field of science. The course emphasizes problem solving. The primary topics covered are atomic theory, bonding, gas laws, thermodynamics, liquid and solid states, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and electrochemistry. Approximately 30-50% of class time will be devoted to laboratory activities. The course meets Indiana Core 40 and AHD requirements in the area of Physical Science. Students enrolled in the course prepare for the College Boards Chemistry Advanced Placement Examination. An extensive portion of class time will be spent in the laboratory. At least one 90 minute class period each week will be used to do experiments related to the material covered during lecture. Students will work in pairs throughout the school year in the laboratory. Students will be required to individually write up each lab in a lab notebook and should include a title for the lab, date of the lab, purpose, materials, safety, procedure, data, calculations and/or graphs, conclusion and error analysis. During some labs, students will share their data with the entire class in order to get more accurate results. Chemistry, 6th Edition, Zumdahl and Zumdahl, Houghton Mifflin Company, 2003.
