Information use Apple/Mac systems at Tilburg University

Version 1.1 3 November 2010 (Robert Diepstraten LIS/OA)

* The operating system Mac OS X

http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X: "Mac OS X (Pronounced as Mac OS 10) is a line of operating systems by Apple and has been delivered since 2002 on all new Macintosh computer systems. It is the successor to Mac OS 9, the last "Classic" Mac OS used by Apple as from 1984." Self-development for Apple systems: http://developer.apple.com/

* Mail functionality for the UvT Exchange environment for staff

1. Via mail clients with direct/native support of Exchange
1a. Mac Mail As from Mac OS X SNOW Leopard (10.6) the Mac Mail application has direct/native support for Exchange environments: http://www.apple.com/macosx/exchange/ This direct Exchange support already exists on the iPhone as well: http://www.apple.com/iphone/business/integration/ Also for the iPad: http://www.apple.com/ipad/business/integration/ You can establish a connection from Mac Mail to the UvT Exchange environment as follows: Add Account Full name: <full name> Email Address: <mailname>@uvt.nl Password: <UvT password> At first no username will be asked for. A username will be asked for at a later stage after continuation. Mac Mail initially tries to use the Email Address as Username, but this is not the same at Tilburg University. In the later stage fill in at User name: campus\<UvT username> The Exchange Server address will automatically (autodiscover) be found as email.campus.uvt.nl. Account type is indicated as Exchange 2007, but this means 2007 or higher (UvT uses Exchange 2010). The communication has a secured connection (SSL). The above, but reproduced in screenshots: AppleMail-SnowLeopard-screenshots.pdf 1b. Microsoft Entourage Web Services Edition Microsoft also has an Office suite for the Mac. Part of it is the mail application Entourage. Staff and students of Tilburg University can cheaply purchase the Office suite for the Mac via http://www.surfspot.nl.

After having installed Office on your Mac that way, you can download a special Entourage edition that is the Web Services Edition. This version has direct support for Exchange environments. Url: http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/3/2/B328C9C6-75B5-4B52-952B-7FE71664A111/EWS1306-EN.dmg From Microsoft Entourage "Web Services Edition" you can establish a connection to the UvT Exchange environment as follows: Set Up a Mail Account E-mail address: <mailname>@uvt.nl v My account is on an Exchange server (check mark) Account ID: campus\<UvT username> Password: <UvT password> The Exchange server will automatically (autodiscover) be found (email.campus.uvt.nl). The question "Do you want to verify your account settings?" should be answered with "Skip" button. The verify does not work because the domain controllers (ldap server) are not available outside the Windows environment UvT. The communication has a secured connection (SSL). The above, but reproduced in screenshots: MSEntourageWebServicesEdition-screenshots.pdf 1c. Microsoft Outlook in Office 2011 for the Mac The successor to the Office 2008 suite for the Mac is Office 2011 for the Mac. In the Office 2011 edition the mail client Entourage is replaced by a real Outlook client being equivalent to the Windows version. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/office2011features/features-you-will-love.mspx You can establish a connection from Microsoft Outlook to the UvT Exchange environment: Tools -> Add an Account Exchange Account E-mail address: <mailname>@uvt.nl Method: User Name and Password User Name: campus\<UvT username> Password: <UvT password> or possibly leave empty for automatic prompt later on v Configure automatically The Exchange server will automatically (autodiscover) be found (email.campus.uvt.nl) and the Personal information is filled in. You may possibly adapt the Account description (e.g.: Exchange campus UvT). The communication has a secured connection (SSL). The above, but reproduced in screenshots: MS-OutlookForTheMac-screenshots.pdf

2. Via mail clients with IMAP (SSL) support:

The UvT Exchange also is accessible via the familiar IMAP protocol. Mind: only the secure (SSL) variant is supported. With the UvT Exchange environment is said good-bye to the familiar POP protocol. IMAP server data UvT Exchange environment: imap mail server: email.campus.uvt.nl port: 993 or secure connection SSL/TLS ! authentication method: normal password username: campus\<UvT username> password: <UvT password>

outgoing server (SMTP): <mail provider smtp server> (then UvT IP address possibly is mailhost.uvt.nl as well) For mail clients with IMAP (SSL) support think for instance of: 2a. Mac Mail 2b. Thunderbird for Mac (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/all.html) Take care that the advanced option "mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks" below in Thunderbird is on "false. This way attachments are properly downloaded and also in-line images are properly loaded. Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Config Editor Go to the entry 'mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks' The value is default on true. Double-click this line and the value will change into "false". Subsequently close the Config Editor. 2c. MS Entourage 2d. MS Outlook in Office 2011

3. Via web browser by means of Outlook Web App (OWA):

The UvT Exchange environment can also be accessed via a web browser: https://email.campus.uvt.nl/owa Web browsers: 3a. Mac Safari 3b. Firefox for Mac (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html). username: campus\<UvT username> password: <UvT password> The user experience is the same here as in MS Internet Explorer (since Exchange 2010).

* New UvT mail functionality for students

All UvT students will receive a new mail environment (2011) based on the Microsoft cloud service Live@edu. At the back it regards an Exchange 2010 environment for the UvT students being hosted by Microsoft in their datacenter in Amsterdam. The purpose is to open up this environment via the SURF federation, implying that UvT students can use their UvT username and UvT password for this new mail environment. For the time being this new mail environment can only be accessed via a web browser! In other words: Apple users can also use for instance Mac Safari or Firefox here. The user experience is the same here as in MS Internet Explorer.

* Printing from Mac to Oc student printers at Tilburg University

Survey student printers location: 1. At the Campus':

http://www.tilburguniversity.edu/students/it/printers/location/

- Mind that you have a UvT-wireless connection, see manual with screenshots: http://www.tilburguniversity.nl/services/lis/instruction/uvtwirelessmac.html - When you have a UvT-wireless connection on your Mac you subsequently go to System Preferences and choose Print & Fax - Via + add new printer: choose for 'IP-printer' protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD address: gdansk.uvt.nl (or other IP-name; see above survey student printers locations) queue: (leave this field empty) When there is connectivity, the Name and Location are automatically filled in Generic Postscript Printer is default used as driver (Print Using): Click Add and the printer is added to the Mac and available for printing. You find your print jobs on the Oc printer in question under the user name you use on your MAC. Should you want to add a specific Oc printer driver instead of the Generic Postscript driver, you can do this via Options & Supplies --> Driver The most recent Oc drivers can be downloaded here: http://www.oce.nl/Support/Default.aspx for instance for Oce3145: http://www.oce.nl/producten/3145/downloads.aspx for Oce VarioPrinter: http://www.oce.nl/producten/varioprint2045/downloads.aspx The above, but reproduced in screenshots: Apple-studentenprinter-screenshots.pdf 2. 'From Home: - Instead of UvT-wireless, only available on-campus, you should enable a VPN connection at home to Tilburg University. See further on. For 'add printer' goes the same as described above.

* VPN support on the Mac to UvT (staff and students)

UvT VPN server and authentication data:

http://www.tilburguniversity.edu/about-tilburg-

university/library/instruction/vpn.html
1. Via "direct/native" support of Cisco VPN:
From Mac OS X SNOW Leopard (10.6) there is direct/native support for Cisco VPN. This way no extra software (VPN client) is to be pre-installed any longer. The latest iOS operating system also has direct/native support for Cisco VPN. This operating system is used on the iPhone, Ipod touch and iPad. From your Mac you may establish a VPN connection to Tilburg University as follows:

Go to System Preferences and choose Network Via + ad a new interface: Interface: VPN VPN Type: Cisco IPSec Service Name: <think of a name for the connection> (for instance: UvT VPN (Cisco IPSec) -> Create The new interface appears in the list. Subsequently add the UvT VPN server and authentication data as follows: Server Address: 137.56.127.10 Account Name: <UvT username> Password: <leave this empty> (when establishing the VPN connection the VPN server will ask for the password) Subsequently click Authentication Settings and add: Shared Secret: working-off-campus Group Name: UvT-off-campus -> OK Check mark "Show VPN status in menu bar" -> Apply -> now all data are stored Via the Connect button in this new VPN interface you can subsequently actually establish a VPN connection with Tilburg University. You can also do this via the menu bar where an extra icon is added for the VPN connection. By clicking the icon in the menu bar, a pull down menu appears and there you can choose: Connect UvT VPN (Cisco IPSec). As soon as the connection with the UvT VPN server is established, an authentication screen appears. Fill in at Password: <UvT password> Disconnection can also be done via the icon in the menu bar by means of: Disconnect UvT VPN (Cisco IPSec) The above, but reproduced in screenshots: Apple-VPN-UvT.pdf

2. Via Cisco AnyConnect client:

This requires extra software:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.mspx

- Microsoft Office suite for the Mac

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/Office2008/default.mspx The Office suite for the Mac can be cheaply purchased as staff or student of Tilburg University via http://www.surfspot.nl.

This suite is compatible to the formats as used in Office 2007 and higher for Windows. The successor of the Office 2008 suite for the Mac is Office 2011 for the Mac. In the Office 2011 edition the mail client Entourage is replaced by a real Outlook client being equivalent to the Windows version. http://www.officeformac.com/blog/Welcome-to-the-new-Office-2011-User-Experience http://www.microsoft.com/mac/office2011features/features-you-will-love.mspx

- Microsoft Document Connection for the Mac

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/itpros/dcc.mspx The Office suite disposes of the tool Document Connection. This enables among others to download documents and/or upload them to a SharePoint environment. Think of Surfgroups and in the future the SharePoint cooperation environment at Tilburg University.

- Microsoft Messenger for the Mac

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/messenger/default.mspx This may be something for the future, for Tilburg University has no implementation of Microsoft Office Communications Server for the time being.

- Microsoft remote desktop for the Mac

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx A remote desktop client for the Mac exists for quite some time for you to also establish an RDP session from your Mac to a Windows Server and so MS Terminal Server. Windows server management could be executed this way for IT managers from a Mac. In the future windows applications could be offered to Apple users via a Terminal Server this way. This moment Tilburg University has no implementation of a Terminal Server environment for end users as yet.
