FRIDAY 3 AUGUST - THURSDAY 9 AUGUST

FRIDAY 3 AUGUST - THURSDAY 9 AUGUST

Woman in a Dressing Gown (PG)

1hr 35. UK 1957. Directed by J. Lee Thompson. With Yvonne Mitchell, Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Syms. In a re-issue for 2012, this story of household oppression was made before kitchen-sink drama became standard. Amy (Mitchell) is anything but the model 1950s housewife: burning food, rarely dressing and watching helplessly as the plates pile up and the walls close in. Her husband Jim (Quayle) turns to his young secretary Georgie (Syms) and, as he asks for a divorce, Amys fragile state threatens to crumble completely. The film allows the viewer to see all three points of view and gives time and space to the dilemmas faced by each protagonist rather than demonising either the troubled woman or her guilty husband.

Nostalgia for the Light (12A)

1hr 34. France/Germany/Chile/Spain/USA 2010. Directed by Patricio Guzmn. With Gaspar Galaz, Lautaro Nez, Lus Henrquez. In Spanish and English with English subtitles. Described by Philip French in The Observer as beautiful, painful, cerebral and a film to be seen, re-seen and pondered, this documentary uses the barren landscape of Chiles Atacama Desert to set the search of visiting archaeologists and astronomers for the secrets of the ancient past and the Universe against the struggle of the Chilean people to sift through the sand and uncover the horrors of the Pinochet regime in their more recent and more personal history.

FRIDAY 3 AUGUST - THURSDAY 9 AUGUST

FRIDAY 10 AUGUST - THURSDAY 16 AUGUST

The Women on the 6th Floor (12A)

1hr 46. France 2010. Directed by Philippe Le Guay. With Fabrice Luchini, Sandrine Kiberlain, Natalia Verbeke. In French and Spanish with English subtitles. Jean-Louis Joubert (Luchini) is an affluent stockbroker with a comfortable life and an elegant wife, Suzanne (Kiberlain), who aspires to the upper echelons of 1960s French society. Upon hearing that Spanish maids are now the dernier cri in their concierge building, she hires Maria (Verbeke), whose charms are not lost on Jean-Louis. Finding a whole new world in the servants quarters on the eponymous 6th Floor, of undiscovered hardships but also friendship and warmth, he learns that money is not the route to happiness.

Jackpot (15)
1hr 26. Norway 2012. Directed by Magnus Martens. With Kyrre Hellum, Henrik Mestad, Marie Blokhus. In Norwegian with English subtitles. Following the huge success of Headhunters, comes the latest thriller from crime writer Jo Nesb. When the police find small-time criminal Oscar (Hellum) covered in blood, holding a shotgun, near eight dead bodies in a strip club, it doesnt take them long to jump to certain conclusions concerning his guilt. Oscar protests his innocence, however, and begins to tell a story of how he won 1.7m on the football pools with a syndicate of three criminal friends and how things began to go very, very wrong. Telling its Coen brothers-esque tale in a sequence of extended flashbacks, Jackpot manages to keep the laughter coming even as the violence escalates.

FRIDAY 17 AUGUST - THURSDAY 23 AUGUST

FRIDAY 17 AUGUST - THURSDAY 23 AUGUST

The Bird (LOiseau) (TBC)

1hr 30 approx. France 2011. Directed by Yves Caumon. With Sandrine Kiberlain, Clment Sibony, Bruno Todeschini. In French with English subtitles. Anne (Kiberlain, Beur sur la ville, Polisse) lives alone and seems to make no impression on the world, until a bird flies into her apartment and her life. Ostensibly content with no family or friends, she finds freedom in its companionship, which adds a lightness to her existence she had not realised was missing. Avoiding sentimentality and with a dry humour, Yves Caumon has created an intriguing and measured film exploring loneliness, grief and rebirth.

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (15)

1hr 31. USA 2012. Directed by Alison Klayman. With Ai Weiwei, Danqing Chen, Ying Gao. In English and Mandarin with English subtitles. One of the most fascinating artists of our time, Ai was taken into police custody following his criticism of the Chinese government over the death of 5,000 students in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. This act of defiance raised his profile from a cult figure into a key figurehead for the pro-democracy movement and he has turned activism into an art form, creating digital, installation and performance art from the repressed details of the tragedy. Klaymans portrait was filmed as Ai prepared for the Sunflower Seeds installation at the Tate Modern, giving a unique and essential insight into his art as well as his campaigning.

FROM FRIDAY 24 AUGUST

FRIDAY 31 AUGUST - THURSDAY 6 SEPTEMBER

The Imposter (15)

1hr 39. UK 2012. Directed by Bart Layton. With Adam OBrian, Anna Ruben, Cathy Dresbach. Nicholas Barclay walked out of his San Antonio home in 1994 following an argument with his family, and disappeared without a trace. He was 13. Three years later, Nicholas - or someone claiming to be him - was found in Spain. Putting doubts over his identity - and his suddenly French accent - down to trauma brought about by his kidnap and torture, Nicholass family welcomed him home. Bart Laytons acclaimed and gripping documentary, told through interview and reconstruction, analyses as the desperation of a family looking for a happy ending, and asks how far people are willing to suspend their disbelief.

Berberian Sound Studio (15)

1hr 22. UK 2012. Directed by Peter Strickland. With Toby Jones, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Susanna Cappellaro. With a five-star review in The Telegraph, describing it as the standout picture at this years Edinburgh International Film Festival, Berberian Sound Studio is the second feature directed by Peter Strickland, winner of the Silver Bear at Berlin for his first film Katalin Varga. Set in a 1970s Italian film studio, Toby Jones (My Week with Marilyn, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) plays the nave and unworldly Gilderoy, the analogue engineer hired to create the weird and ghastly sounds effects needed for the horror film he becomes drawn into, until the lines between reality and art become blurred.

FRIDAY 7 SEPTEMBER - THURSDAY 20 SEPTEMBER

FRIDAY 21 SEPTEMBER - THURSDAY 4 OCTOBER

Anna Karenina (TBC)

Running time TBC. UK/France 2012. Directed by Joe Wright. With Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson. Joe Wright directs Keira Knightley for the third time - after Pride & Prejudice and Atonement - in Tom Stoppards adaptation of Tolstoys classic novel of love and obsession (described by William Faulkner as the best ever written). Knightleys Anna, unhappily married to Jude Laws Alexei, begins an affair with Count Vronsky (Aaron Johnson, KickAss) that parallels the womanising of her brother (Matthew Macfadyen, Spooks), but with vastly different social repercussions. Set against the febrile atmosphere of late-19th century Russian high society, Wrights film is genuinely epic in both ambition and execution, and features a breathtaking cast of established and up-and-coming performers.
11

The Intouchables (TBC)

1hr 52 approx. France 2011. Directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano. With Francois Cluzet, Omar Sy. In French with English subtitles. Phillippe (Cluzet, Tell No One), a wealthy aristocrat, suffers a serious paragliding accident which leaves him as a paraplegic. Against the advice of friends, he impulsively hires Driss (Sy, who won numerous awards for the role), a street youth from the Paris banlieues, to work as his live-in carer, despite the younger man not really wanting the job. Drisss confrontational and unconventional approach proves unexpectedly successful, and the two men eventually become close friends. Based on a true story, The Intouchables avoids sentimentality as it tells this moving tale in a brutally honest but very funny way.
