Duration: 45 minutes ISBE Learning Standards: STATE GOAL 17: Understand world geography and the effects of geography on society, with an emphasis on the United States. A. Locate, describe and explain places, regions and features on the Earth. 17.A.1a Identify physical characteristics of places, both local and global (e.g., locations, roads, regions, bodies of water).

Enduring Understanding: 1. Students will spark up a curiosity to the world outside of their neighborhood and city. (Students use what they know in diverse and real contexts). 2. Students can describe and create insightful connections. Knowledge 1. Students need to be able to know what state they live in. 2. Students need to be able to know Illinois facts (state bird, tree, flower, snack, flag). 3. Students need to be able to know the difference between a continent, country, state, and city. Skills 1. Students need to be able to use/read a map and a compass rose. 2. Students need to be able to properly apply state knowledge to use a graphic organizer (web). 3. Students will use this knowledge to understand the world around them. Overarching Questions 1. What is the value in knowing where you live and more about the state of Illinois? Why? 2. To what extent does the state of Illinois help you understand who you are and where you live?

Objectives By the end of this lesson, students will be able to.. Recognize the state they live in using the map of the United States. Comprehend the state tree, bird, flower, snack, and flag. Activities and Procedures A.) Introductory Activities To introduce the topic Illinois, the teacher will show a power point presentation. The power point presentation will describe where we live. The teacher will break it down from continent to city with an emphasis on the state of Illinois. The students will learn about their state tree, bird, flower, and flag. Also, they will learn that in 2003, Joliet Elementary School students voted that popcorn should be Illinois snack. The teacher will explain that corn is one of Illinois main crop. In addition, the teacher will ask students to point out the neighboring states using the United States map. B.) Developmental Activities 1.) The teacher will use the overhead projector to ask students to list the state tree, bird, flower, and flag. The teacher will model for students an example of what they will write and draw on their State Symbols worksheets. 2.) After the State Symbols worksheet, the teacher will show students an example of a graphic organizer that they will create. In order to create the graphic organizer, the students need a blank outline of Illinois. With the outline, they will glue corn on the

edges of the state. This will help students recognize the outline of their state. 3.) After the outlining Illinois with corn, the students will begin to combine their material to set it up on the graphic organizer. C.) Differentiated Instruction ELL- The teacher has created a sample graphic organizer to guide students to follow that format. Also, the power point presentation uses many pictures to illustrate difficult concepts. Special Education-The students will be given the chance to draw pictures to describe their state tree, bird, flower, and flag. The teacher will walk around to support students and further explain the activity. Talented/Gifted - The students will be given the opportunity to write down questions that they may want to know about Illinois. Throughout the unit, we will explore those questions and the students will be given the chance to report their findings to the class. D.) Closure The teacher will ask students to recap what they have learned about Illinois such as, the state tree, bird, flower, snack, and flag. Also, ask students if they have any questions on Illinois they want to learn and we will explore them in the next lesson part of the unit on Illinois. Assessment InformalThroughout the lesson, the teacher will join each group to make sure they are not confused, on task, and doing the graphic organizer correctly. FormalThe graphic organizer and mini quiz will be collected and scored as part of their social studies grade. Rubric for Graphic Organizer 1: Weak 2: Average 3: Strong 1.
