PART A Answer Any EIGHT Questions 1.

Two ladies were asked to rank 7 different types of powder. The ranks given by them are as follows. POWDER A B C D E F G Priya 2 1 4 3 5 7 6 Praveena 1 3 2 4 5 6 7 Calculate Spearmans rank correlation coefficient. The equations of two lines of regression obtained in a correlation analysis are the following: 2X=8-3Y and 2Y=5-X. Obtain the value of the correlation coefficient. A problem in statistics is given to five students A,B,C,D and E. Their chances of solving it are , 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 and 1/6. What is the probability that the problem will be solved. Two samples of 100 electric bulbs each has a 1500 and 1550. Standard deviation 50 and 60. Can it be concluded that two brands differ significantly at 1% level of significance in equality.

Three samples each of size 5, were drawn from three uncorrected normal populations with equal variances. Test the hypothesis that the population means are equal at 5% level. Sample 1 2 3 10 9 14 12 7 11 9 12 15 16 11 14 13 11 16 Write some properties of normal distribution. From the data given below about the treatment of 250 patients suffering from a disease, state whether the new treatment is superior to the conventional treatment. Treatment No of patients Favorable Not favorable Total New 140 30 170 Conventional 60 20 80 Total 200 50 250 (Given for degree of freedom =1, Chi square 5 percent = 3.84) Suppose a computer has found, for a given set of values of x1, x2, x3. r12=0.91, r13=0.33, r23=0.81. Explain whether these computations may be said to be free from errors. Write a short note on non-parametric test.

10. Define Hypothesis. Explain the errors. 11. Difference between distribution. Binomial distribution and Poisson

12. Two samples are drawn from normal population. From the following data test whether the two samples have the same variance at 5% level. (F-Test). Sample1: 60 65 71 74 76 82 85 87 Sample2: 61 66 67 85 78 63 85 86 88 91 PART B Answer Any FOUR Questions (4 x 10 = 40)

13. Height of the fathers and sons are given below. Find the height of the son when the height of the height of the father is 70 inches. Father(inches) 71 68 66 67 70 71 70 73 72 65 66 Son (inches) 69 64 65 63 65 62 65 64 66 59 62 14. In a basin area where oil is likely to be found underneath the surface, there are three locations with three different types of earth composition say C1,C2 and C3. The probabilities for these three compositions are 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 respectively. Further it has been found the past experience that after drilling of well at these locations, the probabilities of finding oil is 0.2,0.4 and 0.3 repectively. Suppose a well is drilled at a location and it yields oil, what is the probability that the earth composition was C2 & C3? Apply Bayes Theorem for the above data. 15. The weekly wages of 1000 workers are normally distributed and mean of Rs.70, With SD=Rs.5. Estimate the number of workers whose weekly wages will be (a) Less than Rs.69 (b) greater than Rs.72 (c) Between Rs.69 and Rs.72 16. A test was given to a large group of boys who scored on the average of 64.5 marks. The same test was given to a group of 400

boys who scored on an average of 62.5 marks with S.D=12.5 marks. Examine if theX difference is 5% and 10% significance. 17. A movie producer is bringing out a new movie. In order to map out his advertising campaign, he wants to determine whether the movie will appeal most to particular age group or whether it will appeal equally to all age groups. The producer takes a random sample from persons attending preview of the new movie and obtain the following results. Age Group Under 20 20-39 40-59 60 & over Total Liked the 146 78 48 28 300 movie Disliked the 54 22 42 22 140 movie Indifferent 20 10 10 20 60 Total 220 110 100 70 500 What inference will you draw from this data? 18. Use the sign test to see if there is a difference between the number of days until collection of an account receivable before and after a new collection policy.
