ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FUNDING PROPOSAL

CHANGAMOTO LPF, ZANZIBAR ISLAND, TANZANIA

June 14, 2012 Program Manager USADF Dar es Salaam, TZA RE: Request for funding from USADF

We, at Changamoto LPF, are introducing our solid waste management, pilot project in the south and north districts of Zanzibar, in order to minimize the indiscriminately disposing of solid waste in any open space available. Among the advantages of supporting this environmental project through providing environmental education on solid waste management and co-financing the project in upgrading and construction of dumpsites, our main goal is to impact a large number of lives through creating awareness on the negative economic impacts and on human health. Beside our commitment to reduce environmental degradation and promote human health in Zanzibar, our other focus area is providing microfinancing to SMEs. We however realize that that financial support alone is not enough for achieving sustained economy and competitiveness, as a result, we included business development services (BDS) for SMEs and environmental education to hospitality businesses and the community within the North and South districts of Unguja. We have worked with currently working with three local NGOs and two private sectors SMEs focused on the cleaning process of the environmental. They include: Ecobalance SME Greenhouse plastic recycling centre SME Jumuiya Ya Imarisha Mazingira Zanzibar (JIMZ) NGO Labaika NGO Zanzibar Scrapers Environmental Association (ZASEA) NGO However, they all lack the resources and technology to efficiently manage approximately 2,100 tons of waste, which about 260 tons is plastic, generated by 106 hotels and 36,500 local residence within the North and South district, which includes: Nungwi, Kendwa, Jambiani, Bwejuu and Paje. Zanzibars population has rapidly grown from 980,000 in 2002 to 1.1 million in 2011, which around 65% lives in rural areas. Zanzibar is a major tourist hub and the rural population density is one of the highest in Tanzania. The development of new tourism establishments in the north and south districts contributes to the rapid growth of the population of 1

Zanzibar, especially within the tourist concentrated districts of Unguja. Often, many job seekers from mainland Tanzania flock to areas like Nungwi and Paje in search of opportunities within the hotel industry. There is also large pocket of small enterprises focus on tourism or tourism related business that cater to the tourist if they are able to market their products and services ranging from handicrafts, tour guiding and etc. The total funding required is TSH.60, 000000 and has been calculated based upon financial requirements after consultation and information received from the hospitality industry and the local community within the north and south districts. The summary of the breakdown of all funds made available is such to support our running administrative cost, training equipment and materials, construction materials and means of transporting waste from collection points to dumpsites. The pilot projects duration is limitless and with proper funding and continued operations and management, Changamoto LPF should be able to able achieve its objectives creating an economic, social and environmental sustainability through best practices in pristine solid waste management in Zanzibar. Our environmental education provides tools and techniques to aid the hospitality businesses and the local communities to efficiently be able to manage the solid waste generated by hotels, restaurants and the local community in a sustainable fashion. By meeting our goal to partner with USADF and more organizations of the same interest in Zanzibar, we intend to raise more awareness of the vitality of responsible tourism and keeping our environment clean. The request for funding submitted to USADF is to aid in the upgrade and establishment of this incredible project, which will only improve the lives of the local of Zanzibar through a successful collaboration and coordination between the stakeholders, the local community and the ever popular Tourism industry in the north and south districts of Unguja, with the possibility of expanding into other districts of Zanzibar and Tanzania as a whole. We hope that USADF will take an interest in our Organization and project in keeping Zanzibar clean and healthy. Please contact us at: Phone number and or email address if you require any further information or have questions concerning this proposal.
