Emergency Appeal to Stop the Closure of Yaung Ni Oo High School Dear Comrades, Friends and International Community members

interested in the education of Burmas children: Since 1989 the All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF) began to take shape and established a primary school called Yong Ni Oo School, in the Salween camp (Thethahta village, Bu tho Township, Papun district) to educate the sons and daughters of ABSDF families and local residents and to encourage more awareness of the need for good education. In 1999 Yaung Ni Oo was further extended to include a high school section. Yaung Ni Oo High School is currently situated in Mae Lar Oon refugee camp (40 kilometers toward the Thai-Burma border from Mae Sariang Township) in Thailand. The school is in Section 13 of Mae Lar Oon refugee camp, this section is administered by ABSDF and a home for our families. We have provided free education for 23 years; from 1989 till now, for a total of 6708 students. Now we are coming to the 2012-2013 academic year and the school is facing a dire emergency. It has no regular funding from any organizations for running costs, so the extremely important education of 600 pupils, including 40 boarders, and the employment of 27 teachers is about to stop. In previous years we have received money from NGOs and kind individuals to cover the cost of building supplies for maintenance, text books, teachers salaries and food and clothing for the children. Unfortunately due to worsening global economic conditions, funding cuts due to donor fatigue and the International communitys perception of the political changes in Burma, these donations have stopped. If we cannot get these running costs, the school will have to close, leaving no place for most of the 600 students to get a good education. Yaung Ni Oo is the only school in Mae Lar Oon Camp to teach in the Burmese language and practices absolute nondiscrimination of race, religion or background. We are looking for regular and oneoff donations to continue providing this important facility over the coming year and

in the future. We can guarantee that all monies collected from this appeal will go directly to the school running costs, administered by the Education Committee. We can also provide regular updates to donors on spending, progress and school activities within our framework of transparency and accountability. The cost of educating 600 children, and 27 teachers salaries is 45000 Baht ($ 1500 USD) each month, not including the cost of annual maintenance, text books, stationary. From July of this year we have no money to run the school, so we earnestly and respectfully ask for your help to be able to continue Yaung Ni Oo High School.

Yours very sincerely,
