Ferroalloys—Chemical analysis
Part 6: Determination
of phosphorus content—
Spectrophotometric method
This Australian Standard was prepared by Committee MN/6, Ferroalloys. It was
approved on behalf of the Council of Standards Australia on 17 November 1997 and
published on 5 January 1998.
Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publicati ons will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australian
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editi ons
and amendments, and of wit hdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Australi an Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australia,
are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate acti on taken.

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee MN/6, Ferroalloys as
an extension of the AS 3587 series of Standards for the chemical analysis of ferroalloys.
The method is based on that given in ISO 10714:1992, Steel and iron — Determination of
phosphorus content — Phosphovanadomolybdate spectrophotometric method.
To make the method applicable to all ferroalloys traded in Australia, the Committee
organized an interlaboratory test program to obtain information on the repeatability and
reproducibility of the method.
The objective of this Standard is to provide a standardized procedure for determining the
phosphorus content of ferroalloys.

Ferroalloys—Chemical analysis
1 SCOPE This Standard sets out a spectrophotometric method for the determination of
the phosphorus content of ferroalloys. The method is applicable to the determination of
phosphorus contents between 0.005% and 0.25%, provided that the following elements are
not present in amounts greater than those specified:
niobium 1%
This is a free 5 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.
tantalum 1%
titanium 2%
tungsten 11%
zirconium 1%
3 PRINCIPLE The test portion is dissolved in acid. The phosphorus is then converted
to phosphovanadomolybdate in perchlor ic acid/nitric acid solution. The
phosphovanadomolybdate is extracted into 4-methyl-2-pentanone with citric acid present
to complex any arsenic present. The coloured product is measured spectrophotometrically
at 425 nm.
5 REAGENTS
5.1 General Only reagents of recognized analytical grade and only distilled water or
water of equivalent purity shall be used.
Blank tests should be conducted to verify that all reagents contain a minimum amount of
phosphorus. If the result of the blank test (Clause 8.3) is > 0.005% phosphorus, the cause
of high phosphorus content should be identified and the particular reagent replaced by one
with a much lower phosphorus content.
