Abstract Indicate below the abstract that is submitted by you for presentation at the YSP and the FAOBMB Congress in Bangkok (include all authors, affiliation(s) and the text of the abstract) Title: Serum levels and polymorphism investigation in CFH loci in age related macular degeneration.
Authors: Neel Kamal Sharma,1 Sudesh Prabhakar1, Suresh Sharma2, Amod Gupta3, Ramandeep Singh3, Akshay Anand1
1 Department of Neurology, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India, 2 Department of Biostatistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. 3 Department of Ophthalmology, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India,

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine serum complement factor H (CFH) levels and the association of the CFH gene Y402H polymorphism in patients with age related macular degeneration (AMD) in comparison to normal control subjects. Methods: 115 AMD patients and 61 normal control patients were recruited in this study. The single neucleotide polymorphism was detected by real time PCR and serum CFH levels were detected by ELISA and normalize to total serum protein. Chisquared tests were used for analysis of polymorphism and t-test for CFH-levels. Results: The genotype and allele frequencies differed between the AMD patients (TT18.3%, TC41.3% AND CC40.4%, T39% & C61%) and normal controls (TT76.3%, TC13.6%, and CC10.2%, T83% & C17%) (p value = 0.0001 & 0.0001 respectively). Levels of serum CFH was significantly lower in AMD patients as compared to normal controls (p value = 0.001). Conclusion: Our data conrm that the CFH Y402H polymorphism is a risk factor for AMD in the North Indian population with a higher frequency of the Y402 polymorphism in AMD patients and is associated with decreased levels of CFH protein in AMD patients as compare to normal controls.

Personal Statement Indicate briefly here your Research Interests and Career Goals, why you are interested to participate in the YSP Program (including what you will bring to the YSP and what you hope to gain from it): (no more than one page)

My research interest is in specializing in the field of age related macular degeneration disease. My work is based on molecular biology techniques, So I want to enhance my knowledge about molecular biology techniques and the research work going regarding age related macular degeneration in the world.

I am interested to participate in the YSP Program because due to conference I can meet with other scientists working in the same area and can exchange the knowledge, expertise and information with other organizations. After presentation of my data I can get good comments from scientists to improve my work. This opportunity will give me chance to publish the data in conference proceedings.

As many local problems require a global response. I can contribute to the explanation of many problems and can discuss my research outcomes with scientists from other countries, which may help them in their study design or experiments. This type of programs provide an excellent opportunity to develop contacts and network with international organizations working in same domain of activity.
