Atlanta Police Department July 2012 Highlights

APD instrumental in support of state law aimed at curbing metals theft July 6, 2012
The Atlanta Police Department recently welcomed the newly-enacted scrap metal theft law and said, it will "help curb crime." This action will hopefully bring a swift end to random thieves trying to steal air condition units and its metals. If they plan to turn in their stolen metal for money, they now must be registered recyclers. APD Airport Section Nabs Thief Before He Strikes in Traveler Parking Lots July 6, 2012
Police say they staked out several parking lots at the airport and caught the suspect hopping a fence one night. He had a drill, pry bar and other tools but they arrested him before he had a chance to strike. Passengers appreciate police working to stop the thefts because a stolen catalytic converter would be an inconvenience after a long trip.

APD and Georgia Tech team up to fight crime on campus July 9, 2012
On Monday the Atlanta Police Department and the Georgia Institute of Technology unveiled a car that is conducting joint patrols of the campus and surrounding neighborhoods. The $37,000 2011 Dodge Charger Enforcer II was made possible by generous donations and a corporate-community partnership of the Midtown Alliance, North American Properties and the Atlanta Police Foundation.

APD Officer Stops Gun-Wielding Robber July 13, 2012


Officer Kevin Stroner stopped a robbery in progress at the Martin Luther King Family Dollar earlier this week. Officer Stroner was 2 blocks away when he received the call of a robbery in progress. He immediately responded to 3500 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr SW, where witnesses outside told him there was a robbery in progress inside the Family Dollar and that the suspect had a handgun. Officer Stroner was able to make an arrest without incident. Zone 1 Officers Uncover Burglary Ring July 17, 2012


Police in southwest Atlanta discovered more than 100 suspected stolen items while executing a search warrant last week at a Mozley Park house. The stash includes a number of bikes, computer parts and tools. B.A. Buck statue unveiled in heart of Buckhead as honor to APD officers July 19, 2012
They call him B.A. Buck. Hes a statue of a deer dressed like a police officer and hes currently patrolling Charlie Loudermilk Park. The organizers of Bucks on the Street dedicated the statue in honor of the service of Atlanta Police officers in Zone 2.

The Atlanta Police Major Fraud Unit arrested a 39-year-old for Financial Identity Theft and Exploitation of the elderly for the theft of more than $250,000. Chief George Turner assumes Vice President role at Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police July 26, 2012
Atlanta Police Chief George Turner has been elected to the office of third vice president of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police and also has taken a seat on the board that oversees the organization that represents the heads of local law enforcement agencies statewide.

APD makes quick arrests of Piedmont Park robbery suspects July 31, 2012
According to the Atlanta Police Department, two men were arrested on armed robbery charges overnight in Midtown after allegedly being a part of a larger group that had robbed a pair of juveniles in nearby Piedmont Park.

APD Zone 5 officers responded to a pedestrian robbery call at the park around 11:45 p.m. After receiving a description of the suspects they conducted a canvass of the midtown neighborhood that resulted in two of the five suspects being apprehended.
