Harvey B. de Nieva 1. What were your initial expectations? Have these expectations changed? How? Why?

When I heard that our work place would be in Antipolo City, I was not that alarmed because Ive been there many times already. But when we came to Antipolo and passed across the citys heart, with those rough and narrow roads, I knew that we were going somewhere far from civilization where it was very hot and very irritating. But when we came to the place, it was very fresh and green with very welcoming people waiting for us. This gave me the urge to teach them.

2. What specific skills have you used at your community/institution? My interpersonal skills which I used in gaining trust and creating a relationship with the children especially to the two who were assigned to me because in gaining trust and creating relationship comes engagement in the academic content presented, display better behavior, and achieve at higher levels academically.

3. Describe a person you've encountered in the community who made a strong impression on you, positive or negative. One of the children I taught was not from the Sitio where we were teaching. They were from a nearby barangay. Imagine their fervor to learn that they went there just to be educated? Unlike others who have the opportunity of studying but waste that very precious moment? He was very inspiring.

4. Has the experience affected your worldview? How? Yes because I have more, they have less but I want more, they want less. In other words, I realized that with what I have already, I should be happy instead of wanting more and stop bragging about those that I do not even need. Unlike them in that sitio, they are contented with what they have. It seemed to me that they are very happy regardless of not having more.

5. What did you do that seemed to be effective or ineffective in the community? I seemed not that prepared when I was there in the community. I was like a merchant without anything to sell. This must have shown that I was careless not to prepare some of the things that should be done before the day. I would have done otherwise if given another chance.

6. How can you educate others or raise awareness about this national concern(education+nutrition)? Because we were dealing with grade school children, it is better to present these national concerns about education and nutrition by presenting graphs and pictures that are related to these concerns.

Then I would have them cooperate so that I can evaluate if they learned anything by asking questions through playing. With those I can maintain the interest of the children.

7. What are the most difficult or satisfying parts of your work? Why? Of course the most satisfying part of the work was when I know that they are learning from what we were teaching because I know that the hard work that we did are paid off by knowing that they learned atleast something from us.

8. How are your values expressed through your community work? I think each one of us has shown how committed we are to our purpose because despite the very hot weather under the sun and the very energetic and lively students we had, we did not stop and continued teaching them patiently all that we can.

9.If you could do the project again, what would you do differently? I would be more active and prepared when I would be given the same kind of project again.
