INDIAN TEAM EVALUATION VISIT IN GALLE, HELP-O FOR EARTH CRE AWARD-2012

ENVIRONMENT

Dr.Vishwanath Palled of Chief CSR of JSW Foundation visited HELP-O last 18th & 19th of July 2012 for the evaluation to select winners to award Earth Care Award 2012. They were visited in several biogas plants to review the Galle Clean & Green Bio Energy City Concept applications within Galle city. They were specially examined the environmental service with biogas plants by reducing methane emission & organic fertilizer supplying to the community. It was a complete evaluation through different angle by measuring environmental, economic, social & physical benefits with this project. In addition to that they were given attention for the HELP-O community network & HOLDE Womens Co-op activities for community empowerment. They realized how community is working together to develop their village & preparedness of home gardens to fulfill their food needs. City level best environment practices were consider with the participation of Galle Municipal Council & we would like to thank all the people who help for this task.

MULTI BENEFITED BIOGAS PLANT FOR HOME GARDEN

The supportive project for Divinaguma national program Food & Agriculture (FAO) and HELP-O initiated Home Garden program among eight villages of Galle district. We were select a home garden in Kalegana, Galle to construct a bio gas plant as solution for informal waste disposal system in domestic level. The special thing is pig farm in domestic level and it was difficult to control and mange the daily waste collection. And also other objective was get for human health of the surrounded people. The capacity of the bio gas unit 10m3 & that can dump 50kg organic waste per day with water. Through this we expected to promote the community for home gardening activities through organic liquid fertilizer, provide nutrient and quality food. While they are getting that benefit they can use biogas for kitchen for daily gas need. In that way it is a sustainable solution for food & energy crisis. Today, we can promote this kind of multi benefited program in village level to arrange people for the future environmental challenges. We believe that most important thing is awareness people about the danger of future due to energy & food crisis. In community groups are the best promoter of this concept from small scale to national level as present need.

ENVIRONMENT

HELP-O Womens Co-Operative members are doing self employments, by getting financial assistances from different organizations to develop their businesses. Among them some are doing poultry farms in small & large quantity as one of their main income generating activities. We have selected them under this Telefood Program of Food & agricultural organization of UN to provide them assistances.

AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR POULTRY FARMING IN HIKKADUWA

All the poultry farmers those who are the members of HOLDE womens Co-Op participated for the program & they were aware of different areas such as Vaccination systems for the chicks in different stages in proper way To aware about chicks diseases & some tricks of prevention Could get an idea about proper utilization of money by matching their requirements Could make the linkage with government & private sectors They appreciate the program & much courage to continue their business. Many of them request assistance to repair their poultry cages & they specially mention threatens they face due to price reducing of eggs. Through this discussion we could select ten beneficiaries to assist in this first round. Furthermore they explain they need such assistance to develop their business & it will be a great opportunity for them.

ENVIRONMENT

As the implementation organization HELP-O tries to develop their business in suitable way through deciding different activities by getting ideas of these beneficiaries. During on 05th of July 2012 HELP-O organized a special awareness programs for poultry farmers to have an idea about the barriers of them to develop these business & get much awareness about it. Dr Lasantha Maddage the veterinary assistance of Hikkaduwa area & the officer in charge of the area participate for the program & they could share the ideas with the situation of each during that discussion.

TREE PLANTING PROGRAM FOR GALLE CITY GREENING

HELP-O was done a tree planting program within coastal belt in Galle city under the Galle Clean & Green Energy city project few years ago. Last 16th of July 2012, we have redone the tree planting program within available space in same coastal belt, Galle city. Trees are vital to the existence and wellbeing of our environment. Not only do they improve the quality of the air that we breathe, but they are providers of food and shelter for human beings and wildlife, not to mention climate control. Because of the benefits that our planet and ourselves get from trees, such as trees being oxygen filters, providing shelter and food for humans as well as other animals and their influence on the climate (to mention a few); it is essential that we make sure we make up for all the trees we lose or use. If performed properly tree planting can ensure the successful restoration of a deforested area, hence creating ecologically sustainable resource use.

BIO GAS UNIT FOR MAHALIYADDA TEA FACTORY

Mahaliyadda Tea Factory is situated in Udugama-Galle and one of the leading tea factories in Sri Lanka. This factory is providing much service for the area and they are producing best quality tea for consumers. They are finding renewable energy source by using biogas technology. At present factory hasnt a sustainable solution for organic waste. Basic problem is release many harmful gases to the air and they need more fire wood for kitchen energy need. They have to expend more money for that purposes. HELPO Eco Green Company has proposed a bio gas unit construct in tea factory. Through this biogas plant they expected to find a long term solution for their toilet & kitchen waste problem. In addition to that they try to expand their service in environment friendly manner. This is a good example for other tea factories & institutions turning to environment friendly way.
Factory management is willing to introduce this profitable technology for other factories to expand the green productivity of their productions.

PRESENT NEED OF BIO ENERGY TO CREATE ENVIROMENTAL FRIENDLY WORLD

Bio energy is not a new concept. It is one of the oldest of all energy resources, beginning with the controlled use of fire to provide heat, light and cooking for earliest mankind. The production of prepared bio fuels also dates to ancient civilizations that made metal instruments in forges that burned wood in the form of charcoal. These civilizations also used liquid bio fuels in the form of animal fats or vegetable oils for their lamps. At one time in Canada, the combustion of biomass, usually wood, was the principal method for heating, cooking and providing hot water. Industry also used the combustion of biomass, along with water and wind power, as its principal source of energy. Bio energy includes solid biomass (i.e., forest product wastes, agricultural residues and wastes, and energy crops), biogas, liquid bio fuels, and the organic component of industrial waste and municipal solid waste. Biomass-derived fuels are by-products of industrial or agricultural processes or fuels made from biomass feedstock. Bio energy is considered to be an important source of renewable energy for the next decades. Bio energy is important for several reasons. The most important reasons are: Fossil fuels are running out, and bio energy, at an increased use of energy, can contribute to reducing this problem. It is expected that the use of energy in the world in 2020 will have increased with at least 50% and maybe even 100%, compared to 1990. The last 30 years, the use of energy as almost doubled. For this reason, the supplies of oil and gas may be running out within a few decennia. The supply of coals may be enough for the next 200 years. Bio energy can contribute to the reduction of CO2-push-out, and therefore also to the decrease of the greenhouse-effect. Except for the fact that coals, gas and oil are running out, the combustion of fossil fuels is the most important cause of the increased CO2standard in the atmosphere (80% can be contributed to this). This increase of the CO2-standard is responsible, worldwide, for more than half of the so-called greenhouseeffect (heating-up of the earth).

ECOGREEN

Climate change is a long-term concern but action is needed today. Bio energy is only one part of a many-faceted solution to the problem of climate change, but we must make use of all the measures available to us. The Chinese has long identified the importance of biogas towards meeting the energy needs in rural areas. Biogas is produced through anaerobic digestion. The anaerobic production of biogas does not produce any offensive smell hence it is environmentally friendly, reduces green house effect, greatly increases the fertilizer value of manure and protects water source. Biogas can be used for cooking, heating, generating electricity and running a vehicle. The main challenge of present world is to harness the energy source which is environment friendly and ecologically balanced. This need has forced to search for other alternate source of energy. But unfortunately the new alternative energy sources like the solar, hydro, wind etc. require huge economical value and technical power to operate, which seem to be very difficult for the developing countries. In the present moment biogas energy can be one and only reliable, easily available and economically feasible source of alternative and renewable source which can be managed by locally available sources and simple technology for rural villages.
