Year 9 Astronomy Assignment (Earth and beyond)

This assignment is an assessment task for this class. It will contribute 10% of the report marks for this topic. Fully answer all questions including the question within the answer. You should use your text book and also use the internet to research for facts, and diagrams. Include the question number and label all diagrams. Cover Page 1. Create an attractive heading, include your name and class. 2. Inside the cover create a contents page. The Earth 1. How long does it take the earth to spin once on its axis? 2. How long does it take for the Earth to travel once around the sun? 3. Explain the astronomical events occur on each of these days? i. Autumn Equinox ii. Winter Solstice iii. Spring Equinox iv. Summer Solstice 4. What season is it when the daylight hours are longer than the hours of darkness? What season is it in the opposite (northern) Hemisphere? The Moon 1. What causes the phases of the moon, use a diagram to explain? 2. How does the moons gravity compare to earths? 3. Explain what Olympic event records would be broken if the Olympics were held on the moon? 4. What problems would we face building a city on the moon? (1/2 a page) 5. How far is the moon from the earth? 6. Give two reasons why the moon has so many craters while the earth does not. 7. How does the moon affect the earths oceans?

Planet Case Study

1. Choose 3 planet other than the Earth and write over half a page about it. Include a. b. c. d. e. f. g. What is the surface of the planet like? What is its atmosphere made of? How strong is the force of gravity on it? What are the surface temperatures like during the day and night? When was the planet discovered, and how did it get its name? Does the planet have moons? If so what are their names? Has the planet been visited by space probes? If so when?

Science.Y9.Sawsan.A.25/6/2012 Comets, Asteroids and Meteorites

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

What is a comet? Give an example. What is an asteroid? Give an example. What are meteors? Give an example. Why do we see meteors when they get near the earth? Why does a comets tail always seem to point a way from the sun? What finally happens to comets?

Stars Name a star Describe with the aid of a diagram the life cycle of a star. Include in your explanation what is a Super Nova, Nebula, a neutron star and a Black Hole.

Big Bang Write a paragraph on the Big Bang. Include the evidence which suggests that the Universe is expanding.

Solar and Lunar Eclipse 1. Draw a diagram and give a brief explanation to show how a solar eclipse occurs 2. Draw a diagram and give a brief explanation to show how a lunar eclipse occurs.

Bibliography. All resources including computer software must be recorded. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------July 27th Deadline for the complete assignment. Assessment 1. Originality - All diagrams must be hand drawn No text material can be photocopies/printed in your assignment. All work must be in your own words. 2. Timely - 10% lost per day, late beyond the due date. 3. Presentation Work must be neat. Use of headings. Underline key words. Diagrams must be in pencil, labeled. 4. Content Marks awarded per question answered or task completed. Bonus marks awarded for presentation and accuracy.

Science.Y9.Sawsan.A.25/6/2012 The Earth 1. 23 hours and 56 minutes (almost 24 hours) 2. 365 days 3. i. Autumn Equinox:

when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth's equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens.
ii. Winter Solstice:

The winter solstice is the solstice that occurs in winter. It is the time at which the Sun is appearing at noon at its lowest altitude above the horizon
iii. Spring Equinox:

Moon's Milk or Under an Unquiet Skull is part one of the four part Seasons collective created by Coil.
iv. Summer Solstice:

The summer solstice occurs exactly when the axial tilt of a planet's semi-axis in a given hemisphere is most inclined towards the star that it orbits. Earth's maximum axial tilt to our star, the Sun, during a solstice is 23 26'. This happens twice each year, at which times the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the North or South Pole respectively. 4. Summer During May, June and July, the northern hemisphere is exposed to more direct sunlight because the hemisphere faces the sun.(summer)
The Moon

2. The gravity of the Earth and Moon are shown below.

Earth: 9.780327 m/s2 or 0.99732 g Moon: 1.622 m/s2 or 0.1654 g So the Moon has about 1/6th the gravity of the Earth. the So if you weighed 100lb on Earth you would weigh 16.6lb on Moon. 3. Anything exerting any force at all really. I think it'd be pretty

cool to see what modern day gymnasts could come up with if they could do their routines in near-null gravity. At least, the P-bar and stuff like that would be cool, but if they did like a front hand spring they might just throw themselves off of the dang moon itself when they pushed their hands off of the ground. I can also just imagine

swimmers trying to get through a pool of compressed water in the bulky spacesuits of today.
4.

5. exact number is an average of 384399 km, or 238854 miles.

6. >The earth's atmosphere (air), through friction, burns up most of the many meteors that fall to earth. >The moon has no atmosphere. 7. The moon effects the Earth's oceans because, Just like the

sun's gravity holding the earth in orbit, the moon has a gravitational pull on the earth. So, when the moon orbits the earth it pulls the water up or down, high tide and low tide.
Comets, Asteroids and Meteorites

1. A comet is an icy small Solar System body (SSSB)

that, when close enough to the Sun, displays a visible coma (a thin, fuzzy, temporary atmosphere) and sometimes also a tail. exp: Halley's comet Asteroids are a class of small Solar System bodies in orbit around the Sun. They have also been called planetoids, especially the larger ones. exp: its like a ball coming at you really fast.
