Week 5

John 13:34 "I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. .

Week 5 Day 1

1.

GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY 1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. TODAY'S SPIRITUAL REALITY God's nature should characterize the lives of His children. Each child is by nature and by nurture like his or her parents. Our Heavenly Father also expects that those who have been spiritually born again should exhibit His characteristics. Paul identified the fruit of the Spirit, the characteristics of God that should be expressed in and through our lives because His Spirit dwells in us. Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

God is love. Our Heavenly Father's nature is love - perfect love. As His children, our lives should be characterized by His love. If we do not love, the authencity of our relationship with God can be questioned. Definition of Love Love is an action and not just a feeling. When we love, we show it. God loves us and He showed His love by sending His Son, Jesus to pay our sin debt on the cross. 1 John 4:8 "The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love." On the night before Jesus went to the cross, He issued a new command that His disciples love one another. Loving one another is absolutely crucial to the heart of God. He intends for us to display His nature of love. Love toward one another ought to be the natural outflow of life for those born of God. Within God's, His love should be expressed through us and toward one another. John 13:34 "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, yu must also love one another.

5.

6.

Sometimes, our church family gets the least amount of our love and it is often characterized by division and conflict instead of Jesus' love.

Romans 13:8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Week 5 Day 2

1.

GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY 1 John 3:23 "This is His command : that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as He commaded us." TODAY'S SPIRITUAL REALITY To love one another is a command from our Lord that must be obeyed. Many Christians view God's commands as suggestions to live a better life. Jesus is the Lord of our lives and true lordship is revealed in the way we respond to His command. We honor Him as Lord when we obey His commands. Luke 6:46 "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord' and dont do the things I say?"

2.

3.

4.

Take time to express to Christ your desire to obey Him as the Lord of your life. Ask Him for strength to obey. 1 Peter 3:15 "Set apart the Messiah as Lord in your hearts." Philippians 2:13 "It is God who is working in you, enabling you both to will and to act for His good purpose."

5.

Jesus expects us to obey His command to love one another. John 15:17 "This is what I command you: love one another." 1 John 2:3 "This is how we are sure that we have come to know Him: by keeping His commands."

6.

Those who have truly been born again and have made Christ the Lord of their lives will seek to obey His commands. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For Christs love compels us, since we have reached this conclusion: If One died for all, then all died. And He died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the One who died for them and was raised. As we reflect on what Jesus has done for us, our natural response should be to love and obey Him as Lord, choosing to live for Him and not for ourselves.

7.

Our capacity to love one another comes from being born of God. Obedience to Christ and His commands is a choice we must make as a love response to our Lord. John 14:21 "The one who has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me."

8.

To love the people of God is not a casual thing but a command to be obeyed in response to our Lord. Those who obey are filled with joy because they experience their Lord in a deep, profound way. Suggestions for Loving One Another Encouraging the discouraged. Visiting the sick. Spending time with the lonely. Praying for the confused. Feeding the hungry. Providing finances or material help for the needy. Comforting the grieving. Giving a job to the unemployed. Seeking justice for the oppressed. Assisting with house and yard work during an illness.

Week 5 Day 3

1.

GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY : John 13:34 "I give you a new commandment : love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another."

2.

TODAY'S SPIRITUAL REALITY To love like Jesus requires sacrifice and steadfastness. How has Jesus loved us? Ephesians 3:19 and to know the Messiahs love that surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 3.1. Jesus loved us SACRIFICIALLY! Jesus died for us while we were still sinners and His enemies. Romans 5:8 But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us! The first church eagerly sacrificed to meet the needs of others. Acts 4:32-37 Now the large group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common. And the apostles were giving testimony with great power to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them. For there was not a needy person among them, because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles feet. This was then distributed for each persons basic needs.

Joseph, a Levite and a Cypriot by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas, which is translated Son of Encouragement, sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles feet. Christ wants us to have the same attitude as the first church. He wants us to place others above ourselves and meet their needs. 1 John 3:16 "This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers." Does God want you to lay down or give away any of the following? Check any that He speaks to you about. A material possession Your preferences, opinions A preferred schedule Time to serve others Resistance to change Opposition to a project Witholding of support Money Your dreams, goals, desires An activity or program A position of leadership Your comfort or security Your rights Your reputation

3.2. Jesus Loved Us STEADFASTLY! His constant presence through His Spirit is one of the deepest expressions of His love. In His abiding presence we find joy, peace and rest. We don't have to worry that one day He will stop loving us and leave. Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. 4. To love as Jesus loves requires that we commit to our church family with all our heart, promising to be there in good times and bad.

Week 5 Day 4

1.

GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY John 15:12 "This is My command : love one another as I have loved you." TODAY'S SPIRITUAL REALITY To love like Jesus means that we forgive, show His love unconditionally. and initiate loving others. Jesus commands us to love one another just as He has loved us! 3.1 Jesus' Love is expressed through forgiveness Jesus wants us to forgive others as a demonstration of our love for Him. Matthew 6:14-15 "For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. But if you dont forgive people, your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing." 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgivng one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ." A church will never be able to fully function as a body of Christ as long as members are unwilling to forgive. If we love one another like Jesus, we are eager to forgive.

3.2 Jesus' Love is Given Without Merit Each of us deserves death and condemnation yet God showed us love, saved us and gave us life in His Son. Romans 3:23 "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." God's love and grace should influence the way we love one another. We must show unmerited love toward one another. 3.3 Jesus Initiates His Love Toward Us Romans 5:6 "While we were still helpless, at the appointed moment, Christ dies for the ungodly." To love like Jesus requires us to to be proactive in showing His love. Instead of sitting back and waiting on others, we must initiate relationships with the people of God. 4. The Love Test based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not conceited, does not act improperly, is not selfish, is not provoked, and does not keep a record of wrongs. Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for languages, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.

Week 5 Day 5

1.

GOD'S WORD FOR TODAY Acts 2:44-45 "All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need." TODAY'S SPIRITUAL REALITY To love one another, we must be absolutely committed to our church family. True commitment is a rare gem in our society. Commitment is at the heart of every genuine love relationship. The first church experienced God moving powerfully in and through them. They witnessed thousands of people respond to the gospel in faith as the Spirit of God moved among them. What was it about the first church that allowed the Lord to use it so powerfully? (i) The people were totally committed to the Lord and His plan. (ii) The people were totally committed to one another. Our commitment in love to the Lord will be expressed by our commitment to love one another, because these members are the body of Christ today. We show love for Christ when we love His body. The first church clearly understood this necessity.

6.

For our churches to be what God intends, we must be committed to the Lord and to one another. Most of us want to be committed to the Lord but hesitate to commit to His people. These two commitments are inseparable.

7.

As Christians, we cannot stand outside the church and watch from a distance. Love compels us to be involved. Do not mock the church, laugh at it or call it a hypocrite. We may not always agree on everything, but we are family; we stick together. As the Father has loved us, so we love one another.

8.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1 Peter 1:22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 1 John 3:18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. Our Saviour kneels down and gazes upon the darkest acts of our lives. But rather than recoil in horror, he reaches out in kindness and says, 'I can clean that if you want.' And from the basin of his grace, he scoops a palm full of mercy and washes our sin. Max Lucado It takes a lot of emotional and psychological energy to keep a wound open, to keep a grudge alive. The longer I allow a wound to fester, the more bitterness, anger and self-pity poison my blood and eat at my heart. Albert Haase I had the choice to either grow up and find God in the situation or become bitter. I chose to find God. And I experienced freedom like I never knew before. Heather Mercer (Christian Aid Worker who was imprisoned in Afghanistan, 2001.) Heavenly Father: Teach us that love and forgiveness are essential bridges that span the chasms of resentment and bitterness. Also, teach us that feeling gratitude without expressing it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it. Anonymous
