Muslims all over the world use this expression as a common greeting. When two Muslims who are complete strangers to each other meet (such as my case) and say salaam, a common ground is established Page 3

Over the past few decades, researchers and developers have concentrated on designing energy efficient devices to be used in the same way as modern day technologies. Many people still are unclear as to how significant of an impact these green, or environmentally-friendly, technologies may have on the environment. They are designed to reduce pollution, reduce the rapid rate of the destruction of our ozone layer, and to restore energy. Solar panels are an example of an energy efficient technology. They serve as an alternative to traditional electricity in both commercial and residential buildings. Solar panels use light energy, photons, from the sun to generate electricity through an electric current. They are energy efficient because they use energy from a natural resource rather than a nonrenewable source such as oil. They require little maintenance, are ensured to last a lifetime and are virtually noiseless. Although these panels may seem pricy, in the long run they save a great deal of money. As the price of oil steadily increases, many people are turning towards solar energy. Not only does solar power conserve energy and reduce the monthly bills and payments, it also adds significant value to investments and properties. Many utility companies will pay the owners of a property for any unused solar energy produced. This policy is designed to create yet another incentive to installing and using renewable resources to improve our environment. Solar panels are both energy and cost efficient, and they are considered to be a highly desirable alternative that strives to improve our environment.

Laudan Salvidio

One day, a servant of Imam Hassan (a.s.) spilled a hot bowl of soup on him. She was very frightened, thinking that he would punish her. She recited Ayah 134 from Surah Al-Imran:Those who control their anger-. Imam Hassan smiled and said he was not mad. She continued:and are forgiving towards people-. Imam Hassan (a.s.) said he forgives her. The servant then finished the ayah saying,Allah loves those who do good. Imam Hassan (a.s.) told her he has forgiven her.

Moral: The Noble Quran shouldn't just be read but learned and acted upon. It is the word of Allah (swt) and it will teach us everything we need to know if we take the time to learn it. 1

Nutritious Foods for Ramadhan

Mohammad Amin Hadavand
With a composition of 92% water, an abundance of Vitamins A, B, and C and rehydrating minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium and sodium, watermelon is a very replenishing fruit. This vitamin C-rich 18th -century hybrid fruit is more than 90% water. Grapefruits also include pectin, which is a particular fiber that can help maintain a healthy excretory system. It is also rich in antioxidants and studies have shown it can lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

While also being rich in water and hydrating nutrients, a red bell pepper contains the antioxidant lycopene and Carotene which can serve as an excellent source of Vitamin A and can help maintain a healthy reproductive system, healthy bone development and healthy tears.

Especially since the holy month of Ramadhan has fallen into the hottest time of the year it is good to know what foods one can consume to stay hydrated. With a correct combination of minerals, natural sugars, and electrolytes these fruits and vegetables can be as hydrating as water while also replenishing the bodys necessary nutrients.

Egg plants are an effective treatment for high blood pressure and an excellent source of folic acid and potassium which has shown to reduce the risk of stroke and age-related mascular degeneration. 2

While they may not be that hydrating, avocados are known to contain more fiber, folate, niacin, thiamine and riboflavin than any other fruit.

A beautiful hadith from Pooya Yazdi's commentary on the Qur'an reads: "This world is a prison for the believers and a paradise for the unbelievers." When asked what he meant by this, Imam Ali replied, the punishments unbelievers will face in the next world are so horrific that in comparison, this world is a paradise, and likewise that the rewards for the believers will be so wonderful that this world in comparison is like prison. How long is it our Imam Al-Hujjah has been living in this prison?! Our flaws, our sins, our lack of self purification and struggle, only add and increase to such delay. May we not be among those who add to Imam Mahdis pain and suffering by calling for his return one moment and falling into the traps of this worldly prison the next. We seek your forgiveness, Oh Mahdi, for we have truly oppressed you by forgetting you! May we be among those who find happiness in the hereafter and realize this life is all temporary, and eventually we will depart from this prison, yearning to be greeted by the beloved servants of Allah, Mohammad (s) and his holy and purified progeny (a.s) inshallah. We should only use from this world as a place to plant our seeds of good deeds and be ready to benefit from them in the hereafter. "Life is like a bridge; don't build your house on it."

Hadith of the Month

Melika Sizar

When a greeting is offered you, answer it with an even better greeting, or (at least) with its like. God keeps count of all things." [Surah an-Nur; 4: 86] This ayah came to mind as I sat waiting for my appointment. The huge caf seemed right about to swallow me whole as I noticed someone clearly looking at me. At first I thought I was mistaken, but the next time we made eye contact, I heard the person say: Assalamu alaykum. Fumbling, I managed to make a hasty reply but I noticed my nerves relax a bit. I was amazed at how one persons words had managed to make my first day at an unfamiliar place a bit more comfortable. The power of this simple expression was not to merely put me at ease, but in many respects, to make my day. This was not the first time I witnessed the tremendous effect on my soul caused by someone greeting me with Assalamu alaykum. Muslims all over the world use this expression (meaning peace be upon you) as a common greeting, with variants in different languages (such as the Farsi salaam). When two Muslims who are complete strangers to each other meet (such as my case) and use this greeting, a common ground is immediately established although they may not speak the same language or be of the same ethnicity. This greeting is one that unifies people around the world, and isnt this very unity one of the most beautiful things about Islam? No matter who you are and where you have come from, as a Muslim you understand that you, like everyone else, are a servant of God and this simple concept unites billions of people on a daily basis. It is not only wajib (obligatory) to respond to a greeting given to you, but it is recommended to respond with the longer, more elaborate version, even when you are in prayer. So why is it that we normally dont heed this rule and greet each other with a merely colloquial Hey or Whats up? when there is so much thawab (blessings) and peace in this simple expression? Also, using Islamic greetings is a form of amre be maaroof, or spreading Islam. We must consciously choose to honor the symbols of Islam and to foster Islamic brotherhood through our thoughts, words, and actions, and greeting each other properly in the Islamic fashion is only one of the many ways we can do so. 3
